"Nappy headed ho's" isn't nearly the worst thing Imus has said. He could have gotten away with it easily if he had responded to the outrage with, "It was a joke, get over it." Instead, he let himself be grilled by Al Sharpton, a scumbag himself, and ended up getting angry and saying something about "you people." If the media thinks it can get you to say something outrageous, it will try to get you to say it. Once Imus' responses became defensive and interesting, he had no chance against the very people who wanted him to say defensive and interesting things.

What is that? Between the rumblings of the return of the "fairness" doctrine to radio and the Dems talking about killing the WSJ deal because evil Murdoch is the buyer, I think we might as well tear up the first amendment.

2007-08-05 10:19:41 AM
I thought Imus was coming back.

2007-08-05 10:20:29 AM
Its a simple supply and demand problem. People demand humorous talk show hosts that aren't afraid to be politically incorrect. As long as that demand is there a radio stations will supply it regardless of what Al Sharpton or the FCC wants.

NotSubby: Dems talking about killing the WSJ deal because evil Murdoch is the buyer, I think we might as well tear up the first amendment.

You must be referring to the little-known "Freedom of monopolistic business practices" amendment.

One interesting part of the article:

"(Scarborough has) been teamed with former CBS News reporter Mika Brzezinski, who briefly became an Internet sensation last month for refusing to read a report about Paris Hilton leaving jail.

This video of Mika refusing to do the report at all, while Joe basically acts like a dick, is classic. Mika shouldn't be a co-host, she should have her own show.

And from the same clip, it appears that Joe's producer is Faye Dunaway. I think I'll just rename Joe to Howard Beale.

So then I think the guy might find "The Amexicans Are Taking Over" pretty funny then even though the short is about children who don't know how to paint an American Flag? (pops)

MOHWowbagger: You must be referring to the little-known "Freedom of monopolistic business practices" amendment.

I'm not sure if you understand what monopoly means. With the still large number of media outlets available (especially in NYC) the purchase is hardly a monopoly.

Are you saying you support the gov't telling the media what to do? If you like that, the NORKS run a news service that would be right up your alley.

Talk Radio is the lowest of all forms of entertainment.

(yes, its worse than reality tv)

2007-08-05 10:41:55 AM
NotSubby: I'm not sure if you understand what monopoly means.

Well, here's what Dictionary.com says:
"exclusive control of a commodity or service in a particular market, or a control that makes possible the manipulation of prices."

You don't think Rupert Murdoch controls a quantity of media outlets sufficient to meet that description? Or that he would if this deal went through?

Are you saying you support the gov't telling the media what to do?

Nobody's telling anybody what to do at this point. I think it would be a good idea for an unbiased committee to take a look at the deal, gather more information than you or I have, and decide whether this deal would create a monopoly. You make it sound as if the government is regulating the content of the media by looking at this deal.

I hope that Craig Carton stays on the Jersey Guys. Its great to listen to on the way home.

The fact is that there are more people who like listening to that kind of material than the people who are greatly 'offended' by it, so TV and radio stations are going to hire these people because that's what people want. Unfortunately, the people who are offended by what they hear find it easier to form protests and try to get the host fired instead of simply changing the channel. Then again, you can't push your attention whore status simply by changing the channel.

So you do know. That means you're willing to exaggerate to take a shot at evil Murdoch.

And to answer, NO he's not taking exclusive control of the print media market. Not even in NYC where the Journal is based. You can't claim he is (you proved it by posting the definition).

You don't like the guy and his media outlets. I'm OK with that, don't buy his product.

However, the government should NOT get involved in addressing your dissatisfaction with his news outlets. You are advocating government censorship.

"Nobody's telling anybody what to do at this point."

That's true enough. One of the presidential candidates *is* saying the dem congress should stop the buyout because he doesn't like Fox News. Senior Democrat senators have openly suggested the return of the fairness doctrine. While there hasn't been an outright attempt, you don't wait until after the fact to point out the government is at its worst when it controls speech.

I would say the same things if I thought the GOP were involved in trying to stifle air america.

And before you call me a ditto-head, I listen to NPR when I listen to talk radio.

You'd think someone at FARK would have a better sense of these sort of things, but Joe was not acting like a dick. He was just playing off of Mika-- trying to get her more annoyed about the situation, because it was good TV.

I hate Joe Scarborough, mainly because he's probably a murderer, but since he took over the morning spot it's become my routine to have it on. Imus was the previous routine, but I think there's a lot more content and intelligent conversation on Scarborough's show than was ever on Imus' as well as Mika being about the best news anchor on TV right now.

The word nappy is not racist, it refers to someone whose hair looks like they just took a nap. If it is racist then the file sharing program Napster is racist too.
They used to call Shawn Fanning "Napster" because of his messy hair.

I can't see Carton playing the sidekick role. He's the sort who tries to dominate every conversation. Doesn't seem like playing second fiddle would work for him.

At times he can annoy, and at times he can be very funny -- which is pretty much what you want in a loud and brash talk show host.

I'd like to see him stick with 101.5.

This. Also, no idea how they'd move staff around at 101.5. T Dogg with Dennis and Judy with Ray Rossi? Meh.

Anybody know what the deal was between Craig and Jim Gearheart awhile back? Craig was busting on him a lot awhile ago.

For the love of Jebus, WFAN is a sports station. Not just a sports station, but America's first all-sports station. Put sports on in the morning! The FAN is probably the only sports station that never had sports on during AM drive. I heard Boomer when he was briefly teamed with Monica Crowley a few months back; it was unlistenable. I emailed the FAN's program director to this effect. FWIW I also emailed 101.5's program director (and got a favorable response) when I complained about the Jersey Guys (because they never do traffic reports on time).

I guess I shouldn't care; back then I was commuting 40 miles each way. Now I'm self-employed, the office is 4 miles away so I don't need traffic reports, and I get up after AM drive is over.

NBC and WFAN can really just die in a fire for being the cowardly asskissers they are. Imus did NOTHING wrong at all, nothing until Sharpton opened his damn mouth forcing the guy to get removed, same with CBS and their buckling under too. Anything he said was asked of him to do so in his contract, contractually he was also under a few second delay which never was used. It just is another in a long line of black minority asshattery using whatever they can to screw someone out of a job because they didn't like what they heard. The entire nappy headed ho bit aside from being tasteless was hardly racist...but it was contorted to seem that way. I really do pity the guy as Imus had a good thing going there and did not deserve that fate. And as well said in the submitters comments, look at what is potentially replacing him which does far worse just to other groups of minorities instead as that must be alright.

Just pisses me off to no end groups in general trying to ram diversity, well their version of it down everyone elses throat. That's no way to make things better, no way to get things more equal, just a great way to piss off people and drive wedges through society. I imagine if you tried to bring up true unity to any of these clowns you'd get roasted. Being united as one, as equals is the way to go. Diversity is nice at home or in the community, but forcing it upon everyone, trying to fix what doesn't need to be fixed that special way is just dumb.

Really wish this would get removed from the deck of cards and burnt.

Go back and read the second part of the definition I posted.
No, wait, I'll post it again --
"... or a control that makes possible the manipulation of prices"

I didn't say Murdoch had exclusive control of anything. Of course there are other media outlets. But he controls (or would control) such a disproportionate share of media that it unfairly alters the competitive landscape for everybody else.

NotSubby: you don't wait until after the fact to point out the government is at its worst when it controls speech.

This isn't a freedom of speech issue -- not by a long shot. You are the only person I've heard make that claim. This is an antitrust issue, pure and simple. If your personal conspiracy theory is that Democrats are trying to block this merger as an indirect way of limiting Murdoch's freedom of speech, that's another discussion completely.

NotSubby: And to answer, NO he's not taking exclusive control of the print media market.
GOD, I love when people post things in a pissy manner, and they don't even bother reading what they are replying to. He posted the entire definition, and pointed out that there's another way to define a "monopoly".

You stayed focused on one part of that definition. Either you are intellectually lazy, or you have a bias in this fight.
