I've never been able to watch more than about 3 minutes of that movie.

Really liked him as Iago.

Poor Bob Hoskins. Who Framed Roger Rabbit was somewhat bearable, but nothing can compare to his characters in Hook(Smee) and Enemy at the Gates(Nikita Khrushchev).

An decent actor who picked a rotten part. Hey, it happens.

The parrot in Alladin? That was Gilbert Godfried.

No, as Iago in Othello.

Did he cash the check? Yes?

Then he can STFU and GBTW.

Well, never saw it, but still a big "swing and a miss" on my part. I knew I should have checked IMDB first. That'll learn me...

/was forced by the wife to watch Aladdin last week
//I still FAIL
///at least it was a minor FAIL, and not a major one

sailorman_glh: The parrot in Alladin? That was Gilbert Godfried.

I really hope that was sarcasm.

Hoskins is one of my favorite actors of all time (who else could play Iago, Mussolini, Eddie Valiant, J. Edgar Hoover, Manuel Noriega, Nikita Khrushchev, and Pope John XXIII all in the same career?) but playing Mario was a bad idea. They should have given the role to Ron Jeremy.

I never saw that version of Othello. I covered my FAIL in the previous comment, and am accepting of it.

Regarding the SMB Movie (which I saw in the theatre), I was watching "Species" the other day and had forgotten that Ben Kingsley had a major role in that.

/on the topic of great British actors in crappy movies

Dude, why did you have to go and accept your failure. I wanted to make fun of you SO HARD. You have no idea. I even had a good paragraph long diatribe ready to reduce you to a slightly steamy pile of internet fallout, but you went and ruined it.

Thanks a LOT.

Love how my browser cut the page title short at "Making 'Super Mario Bros.' Was a "F**king Nig"

Hoskins kicked ass in Brazil.

My father hated working on that movie so much, he sued the Production company.

/actually they screwed him out of 20 grand.

toddalmighty - thank you. I was sitting there staring at his face and thinking about brazil and asking myself why? he doesn't look like robert deniro, what farking movie am i thinking of?

Then I read your post and remembered I was a bit of a stickler for paperwork. I mean, where would we all be without the proper forms?

Because I found it to be the best way to diffuse incoming snark. Call it my "Patriot" to your "Scud."

And 60% of the time, it works everytime

Screw you, subby. The Super Mario Brothers movie was one of the defining moments of my nerdy childhood.

Someday you will all realize its genius.

2007-08-03 05:30:09 PM
He received a paycheck for making that movie.

I had one of the most disillusioning and horrid moviegoing experiences of my life.

That's hardly balanced.

I hate that damn movie with every fiber of my being. That and the Street Fighter movie. Ken and Ryu as comic relief con-men? WTF?

2007-08-03 05:35:33 PM
Sorry folks, it's an awesome film.

2007-08-03 05:40:25 PM
love hoskins - especially in the long good friday and mona lisa. but, i'm sorry - in who framed roger rabbit, he had possibly the worst american accent of all time. almost a michael palin-esque parody of an american accent.

which begs the question: why not cast an american in that role? i mean, bob was hardly the star of that film - just about anyone could've filled the role.

the same can be said for the other side of the coin. i just watched (or slogged through, more aptly) the good shepherd, in which the normally excellent billy crudup plays a british character sporting a terrible english accent. again - why not cast a brit in the role? it's not a principle character! now, it's not quite as bad as don cheadle's accent in the ocean's movies - or dick van dyke's in mary poppins... but it's close!

2007-08-03 05:47:09 PM
Bob-omb sporting Reeboks was one of cinema's biggest shames.

Treygreen13: That clip is exactly what my mom did the first time she ever tried to play a video game. She never played one again. My dad, on the other hand, got all compulsive on Super Mario and the original (SNES) Mario Cart.

I saw Bob Hoskins in the "wind in the willows" remake using live actors they did with the guy from Little Britain. It was ok, Bob did a pretty good job.

2007-08-03 06:17:33 PM
DBrandisNC-wha'happen, did yer dad win? I know a guy who worked on that had plenty of strange stories Another reason to read John Leguizamo's book, Mario & Luigi were drunk on good scotch which wasn't a problem until Hoskins broke his hand(their plumber van door slammed on it)

I've been kicking around for a quite a while a storyline for a new version of a Super Mario movie that's much closer to the original games and characters. It even includes a scene with Wario and Waluigi dancing to Weird Al's "The Plumbing Song".

Maybe I should get off my lazy ass and sit down and write up the screenplay...

2007-08-03 06:30:54 PM
Even though I imagine I'm completely wrong, I like to assume that Hoskins was cast as Mario due to his role in Brazil.

2007-08-03 06:34:41 PM
I liked that movie.

2007-08-03 06:55:51 PM
Is Super Mario Brothers available widescreen on DVD? I'm a big fan of cinematic crap so I'm wondering if that couldn't bear a second viewing.

/still can't get over how 'bright and colorful Mushroom Kingdom' translates to 'dark underground dystopic future on acid.'
//or those 'jump' boots. WTF?

"You reach a point where the cameo is the governor. You go in there for a couple of weeks, you're paid a lot of money, everybody treats you like the crown jewels, you're in and out, and if the film's a load of sh*t, nobody blames you, y'knowwhadimean. It's wonderful."

I gotta get me some-a that.

2007-08-03 07:16:39 PM
I liked that movie. It was stupid, but a fun kind of stupid. Even if it was a Tim Burtonish interpretation of Mario Brothers.

2007-08-03 07:46:32 PM
And what's worse is that the ending of the movie hinted at a possible sequel.

That and the equally lame Dolph Lundgren He-Man movie.

When it comes to short, hairy British actors, Hoskins & Ian Holm rule all galaxies. I hope they never die.

I honestly don't know how people hate that movie so much? I saw it in theaters, at 9 years old, and thought it was farking amazing. I mean... what's not to like?

I have the DVD, and yes it is widescreen. Guilty pleasure. Very guilty pleasure.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: That and the equally lame Dolph Lundgren He-Man movie.

*shudders*

I can't really fault the He-Man movie. Cannon Films had their paws all over it and added that horrid 'dead parents' subplot. The rest of the movie was somewhat faithful to the cartoon and toy line, plus any additions that were made at least made the movie slightly more badass.

But the Mario movie had nothing to do with the video game. Colorful worlds? Mushrooms? Princess in another castle? Nope, it had Dennis Hopper practicing for Land of the Dead within somebody's fever dream of Metropolis and Labyrinth. It had NOTHING to do with the game outside of the names. NOTHING.

creepycrawly: I have the DVD, and yes it is widescreen. Guilty pleasure. Very guilty pleasure.

Cool. Is it cheap? I might indulge. I like pain.

And here I am on the other end of the spectrum, wondering what the hell anyone could see good in that movie.

But then I didn't see it when I was 9. I was all grown up by then.

I dunno man. Rocket boots. It explains how they can jump so high! Genius. The mushrooms don't make them grow, the mushrooms grow into shields! I mean, they even had bomb-ombs. I mean... how is this bad? The mushroom kingdom is a city covered in fungus!

FlyingJ,

He signed on to be the Gaffer, and left "Passenger 57" early to take the job. When he arrived on set, they said he had been replaced without notice.

/That's a suin'

I watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit again the other night... and now that I'm older I'm able to appreciate the greatness of Bob Hoskins as Eddie Valiant. Essentially playing with himself in every scene...

That sounds very different from the film I remember. He must have seen the European version.
