Unless TFA has been changed since subbie sent it in (and perhaps it has?) there is no mention of any "small armory" found, or even any guns at all. I read it three times. No such language therein.

So... RTFA

t25bimmer:

great Boobies on religion. second post on european integration was a bit alarmist.

muslim minorities are less reluctant to assimilate than immigrants from non-muslim countries in europe, true. This doesnt mean they're not assimilating and going secular.

i think europe has heard the bugle call and has tightened up restrictions. Look at the laws passed in D and NL since the slaying of the dutch playright, and other "sticks" to already go with the "carrots" already offered.

Muslim integration in europe is their biggest challenge this century. But its nowhere near as alarmist as people make it, your good self included. There are plenty of integrated, secular muslims in western europe. Sure there are the immigrants and their asshat honor killings, but those are the first gens and disappear, and there are always going to be the stubborn ones who resist, but most of them do assimilate, they're just slower at it than immigrants are here because a) our immigrants tend to be culturally more like us (latinos are christians at least), and we americans are better at assimilating foreigners and making them assimilate. Europe will learn how to do it, too. they've been dealing with immigrant waves for 40 years, we've been doing it for as long as we've been around.

one could say the same thing about the latinos in this country, and i think most of us in the west who live in "communities threatened by the brown menace who want to take back california" see the fear mongering for what it is, racist bullshiat.

the latinos will assimilate just like the irish and italians before them, and so too will the turks and the algerians in germany and france, respectively. they'll leave their mark on their socieites, but they're hardly a threat to german or french national identity or statehood.

Religion destroys everything and moderate religion paves the way by making it taboo to speak out against someone elses relious beliefs.
Religion raises the stakes of human conflict much higher than tribalism, racism, or politics
ever can, as it is the only form of in-group/ out-group thinking that casts the differences
between people in terms of eternal rewards and punishments. One of the enduring
pathologies of human culture is the tendency to raise children to fear and demonize other
human beings on the basis of religious faith. Consequently, faith inspires violence in at least
two ways. First, people often kill other human beings because they believe that the creator of
the universe wants them to do it. Islamist terrorism is a recent example of this sort of
behavior. Second, far greater numbers of people fall into conflict with one another because
they define their moral community on the basis of their religious affiliation: Muslims side with
other Muslims, Protestants with Protestants, Catholics with Catholics. These conflicts are not
always explicitly religious. But the bigotry and hatred that divide one community from another
are often the products of their religious identities. Conflicts that seem driven entirely by
terrestrial concerns, therefore, are often deeply rooted in religion. The fighting that has
plagued Palestine (Jews vs. Muslims), the Balkans (Orthodox Serbians vs. Catholic Croatians;
Orthodox Serbians vs. Bosnian and Albanian Muslims), Northern Ireland (Protestants vs.
Catholics), Kashmir (Muslims vs. Hindus), Sudan (Muslims vs. Christians and animists),*
Nigeria (Muslims vs. Christians), Ethiopia and Eritrea, (Muslims vs. Christians), Ivory Coast
(Muslims vs. Christians), Sri Lanka (Sinhalese Buddhists vs. Tamil Hindus), Philippines
(Muslims vs. Christians), Iran and Iraq (Shiite vs. Sunni Muslims), and the Caucasus
(Orthodox Russians vs. Chechen Muslims; Muslim Azerbaijanis vs. Catholic and Orthodox
Armenians) are merely a few, recent cases in point.

2007-08-03 06:43:26 PM
SO, and I'm sure I'm not the first one to point this out, it's NOT ok to drink as a Muslim, but it's perfectly OK to go to strip clubs? Why would you go to a strip club if you were sober? That would destroy the illusion that the women actually want you, or are actually attractive.

oh grow up, Yeah I am sure that philosophies like Marxism and Nazism were a walk in the park right? And your screed completely ignores the moderating influence of much religion on human behavior.

Look, people are going to use any and every thing to try and destroy each other, it's part of our make up. Personally I like the moderating influence the western religions and Buddhism have had.

t25bimmer:

so these same sorts of conflicts you mention (or copy and paste) have no non-religious precedents?

Communist countries didnt aid other countries because of their like-minded revolutionary solidarity? Monarchies didnt aid other monarchies to crush republics? Democracies dont stick up for eachother now based on their system of govts?

n*gga please.

people find reasons to kill eachother.

in fact, i think most of the reasons you cited above as being fundamentally grounded in religion are more nationalist than anything. the conflict in kashmir is fueled by the pakistani intellegence service to give the indians a kick in the nuts for beating their asses 3 wars in a row, its a nationalist, govt. concocted creation, not a grassroots religious hatred movement, though the appeals to religious solidarity attract recruits from all over in the same way appeals to patriotism attracted recruits to fight our or any other country's wars.

appealing to a religious cause is just another lever to motivate.

pre 1789ish, you appealed to fight for the king.
1789-1914, you appealed to fight for the republic
1939-1989, you appealed to fight for "way of life" (communist vs. capitalist)
now we fight for "freedom", whatever the hell that is.

we've gone through a nice evolution of things to fight and die for. the muslim world is still stuck in step 1, but it aint no different.

"oh grow up, Yeah I am sure that philosophies like Marxism and Nazism were a walk in the park right? And your screed completely ignores the moderating influence of much religion on human behavior."

The conflict between science and religion is reducible to a simple fact of human cognition and
discourse: either a person has good reasons for what he believes, or he does not. If there were
good reasons to believe that Jesus was born of a virgin, or that Muhammad flew to heaven on
a winged horse, these beliefs would necessarily form part of our rational description of the
universe. Everyone recognizes that to rely upon "faith" to decide specific questions of
historical fact is ridiculous-that is, until the conversation turns to the origin of books like the
Bible and the Koran, to the resurrection of Jesus, to Muhammad's conversation with the
archangel Gabriel, or to any other religious dogma. It is time that we admitted that faith is
nothing more than the license religious people give one another to keep believing when
reasons fail.

While believing strongly, without evidence, is considered a mark of madness or stupidity in
any other area of our lives, faith in God still holds immense prestige in our society. Religion is
the one area of our discourse where it is considered noble to pretend to be certain about
things no human being could possibly be certain about. It is telling that this aura of nobility
extends only to those faiths that still have many subscribers. Anyone caught worshipping
Poseidon, even at sea, will be thought insane.
In reguards to Marxism and Nazism. First off Hitler was a Christian. The problem with such tyrants is not that they reject the dogma of religion, but that they
embrace other life-destroying myths. Most become the center of a quasi-religious personality
cult, requiring the continual use of propaganda for its maintenance. There is a difference
between propaganda and the honest dissemination of information that we (generally) expect
from a liberal democracy. Tyrants who orchestrate genocides, or who happily preside over the
starvation of their own people, also tend to be profoundly idiosyncratic men, not champions
of reason. Kim Il Sung, for instance, demanded that his beds at his various dwellings be
situated precisely five hundred meters above sea level. His duvets had to be filled with the
softest down imaginable. What is the softest down imaginable? It apparently comes from the
chin of a sparrow. Seven hundred thousand sparrows were required to fill a single duvet.
Given the profundity of his esoteric concerns, we might wonder how reasonable a man Kim
Il Sung actually was.

Not all Americans (Felons, etc.) are allowed to own guns. Not all types of guns (fully-automatic, very large caliber, armor-piercing rounds, etc.) are legal for private ownership without very unusual permits.

I didn't RTFA, but I'm guessing this situation falls into one of those two categories (or both).
