If there was ever anything deserving of its own month, it would be sammiches! I may just celebrate every day!

I mean, I can have tuna fish, reuben, PB&J, turkey, salami, bologna, riblet, open-faced club, submarine (several right there!)... this is the best month ever!

Well, that settles it. I was just trying to figure out what to get for dinner...so I'm off the Schlotzsky's for a turkey-bacon club sammich(said in Peter Potamus' voice).

When we were kids, my Mom would cut out our PB&J sammiches with a cookie cutter. Me? I liked the lion or the bell.

Good times.
Good times.

I guess that's contingent upon whether a tortilla is bread.

Discuss.

Excellent, I'll be doing my part to um... raise... sandwich awareness?

2007-08-02 07:31:35 PM
Damn, I loves me some sandwiches.

Cheddar and banana, grilled
Sardine & tomato with lots of mayo
Bacon & grape jelly
Italian sausage with mayo & tomato
Tuna melt
Hummus & hot sauce with tomato

My pre-schooler loves mac & cheese sandwiches.

In my teens, I once ate a sandwich made with a cold slab of pizza, bread and mayo. It was good, but once in a lifetime is enough for that.

Sonny, true love is the greatest thing, in the world-except for a nice MLT - mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe

A sandwich is between 2 pieces of bread. A burrito only uses 1 tortilla.

I say we celebrate by all showing up at the same Subway in the middle of the United States somewhere.

Mmmmm...delectable faux-Mexican food rocks.

ISSUE: Is a burrito a sandwich?

RULE: No. According to the Worchester Superior Court, a burrito is not a sandwich. Link (new window)

ANALYSIS: Because a sandwich uses two pieces of bread, it is distinguishable from a burrito using only one tortilla. Calling a burrito a sandwich "would be absurd to any credible chef or culinary historian." Furthermore, "[t]he USDA views a sandwich as a separate and distinct food product from a burrito or taco."

CONCLUSION: For the foregoing reasons, the motion to grant the burrito-sandwich discussion should be granted.

if so, how can we approach the ontology of the "open-faced sandwich" then?

Don't know how widely available these are in the U.S., as I don't get out of town much, but who doesn't love a torta, super with carne asada or carnitas?

It's like a burrito, but in a French roll. Debate over.

2007-08-02 07:45:57 PM
In most cases I will choose a burrito over a sandwich.

And I don't care if it's faux-mex or not, they're still great with about six beers and an evening off.

i accept the pita into the sandwich family on the basis that it is basically two pieces of bread just connected on the bottom. Also, they are filled with sandwich-esch ingredients. Thirdly, they are delicious.

platypusjones: if so, how can we approach the ontology of the "open-faced sandwich" then?

Actually, I was thinking about that after I posted.

I suppose it depends on the sandwich itself. An open-faced grilled cheese could be considered a sandwich since you're able to eat it with your hands. An open-faced roast beef sandwich is usually served somthered in gravy. Not an easy feat to eat with your hands. Not impossible, but I'm assuming a certain level of civility here.

if you accept the pita, then you must accept the taco, the burrito, and the bastard anglicized "wrap"

Yeah, I was trying to figure that out, too. It doesn't even make sense if you figure they put "million" instead of "billion", cause then it should be 60 billion, not 45.

Must be new math.

I'm going to argue that it has to be a leavened bread. So if you try to make a sandwich out of matzo, pancakes, or communion wafers, you have failed.
