We say kids are drinking younger than ever before, society is going to collapse, this is the worst things have ever been. We may all die.

etc...

I blame our prehistoric predecessors.

WTF? Who didn't do this before they went out when they were young. Cheaper, you were already feeling good when you hit the party. Especially when "teens" probably means 17, 18, or 19 year olds - old enough to drink in bars in most countries.

"Addaction is calling on supermarkets to stop heavy alcohol discounting and multi-buy deals."

What a load - how about they stop selling booze to minors and leave the grown ups to get a decent deal on their booze.

Seriously, what is with the Nanny state in this country?

Welcome to Sweden.

Bought a $10 glass of wine the other night. And not a fancy brand either.

The real problem here is the over-priced drinks at the bar. Pre-drinking can save you from having a $80 bar tab. Now, I wonder why *college students* (who generally survive on ramen and loose change) would want to avoid that if possible?

2007-08-01 06:14:37 AM
If they were going to drink as much either way, then I don't see it as a big deal. They would be less sober driving to the bar and less drunk driving home. I suspect the preloading is in addition to the normal amount though.

Beside, I can now pick up the wasted blond at 11pm rather then having to wait till 3pm.

its called pre-gaming, preloading just sounds really really gay.

We didn't have a name for it, unless you want to call it "Boone's Farm Country Kwencher." That stuff tastes like ass, but pound a bottle before a night out and you're an easy drunk. It's just like being 16 again!

Heres a new one. RTFA. It's in the UK, so the teens in question are legal (or at least could be.)

Kid_icarus is right. There's nothing too stupid about getting drunk before going to the bar, the primary service it offers is a social scene. If you're poor (but smart), the fact that they mark up alcohol 8-15 times what it would cost otherwise is a no-brainer. And this is in England, where cheap Vodka costs almost 20 US a liter and isn't even 80 proof (it's 37.5) A liter of Smirnoff costs probably closer to 30. I'll take my handle for 20.

Also... kids may become more violent when pubs close if they've pre-gamed? Why? I guess they're drunker than they would be... but seriously. Plus they're 18 years old and drunk. who the hell cares? Push them over, they'll quiet down easy enough once they realize they can't get back up.

I stood by while a president stole an election.

I stood by when we went to war based on lies.

I stood by when Americans lost their liberties and rights.

But this is the last straw!

What? you didnt? Its more stupid NOT to do it. The amount of money saved and you're pretty much up for going anywhere and you have fun right from the start no need to wait for things to liven up!

/take me drunk, im home
//Is there an ossifer, problem?

Thanatos_10

Actually our cheap vodka is 75 proof. That's 37.5% alcohol by volume. A much more sensible measure (IMHO).

But yeah, this is nothing new and the solution is NOT to once again move prices upwards. If that happens then I would expect even more people to use drugs instead. Not that I think that's necessarily bad, but the government do.

Maybe if we didn't have a government that tried to wrap everyone if a farking bubble before they're allowed to leave the house then young people wouldn't be so farking bored with life that getting wasted was their only bit of fun.

BrknPhoenix: Oh my, I love nothing more than those who assume because they and their friends did something, that practically everyone in the world must do it.

This article is about Britain, have a look at the 'statistics' Brits and Germans are pretty much born drunk - i don't know a single person my age who doesn't booze up before going out, drinks in clubs are overpriced and the queues are ridiculous, much easier to knock back a few at home, nobody clubs sober

this is a perfectly normal thing to do, (with the exception of those who don't drink) people will start getting wrecked at 17/18 and in a few years will have learned their lesson after too many nights sleeping in the toilet

/not a teenager

Yes, we can't all be good little choir boys like you, going to parties just to compile lists for ratting out the drinking crowd to the nuns at catholic school...

A friend of mine, in his late 30s, did the exact same thing before going to a Rolling Stones concert.

That he never made it there is a whole other story (no, he didn't drive - taxi + commuter train + taxi)...

jackoneill: Am I the only one that's never actually met a truly poor college student? I really don't think they exist.

I think you need to visit a community college. The big colleges have their fair share of trust fund babies.

OTOH a lot of people spend their student loans on stupid non-educational crap, then wonder why they're so royally screwed for decades after college paying them all back.

Am I the only one that's never actually met a truly poor college student? I really don't think they exist.

Well, I know where you're coming from, but trust me...we far out-numbered the trust fund babies mentioned above. Those of us who didn't have Daddy Warbucks to finance our entire college education *AND* give us a monthly allowance had to work for it. The thing is, you generally wouldn't see us at the bars or clubs nearly as often since we were working 2 jobs and also holding down a full class schedule. So we existed (and they're still out there I'm sure), we were just sort of like Bigfoot. Very elusive.

But the pre-gaming...hellz yeah. On the rare occasion we did get to go out, you did what you could to cut costs. Everyone drops by the dorm, has some drinks and food...THEN you go down the block (go for happy hour...1.25 drafts) and your tab is effectively cut in half. And since the drinking is more spaced out, you're generally not as smashed when you leave for home.

It takes you sixteen extra hours to seal the deal if they don't pregame? Maybe you should just switch to ruffies and get it over with

This isn't a new phenomena. I was surprised in France by how expensive alcohol was in bars and clubs considering how cheap it is in supermarkets. It turns out that everyone in France knows this too and tends to get loaded before going out in the evening. Makes sense really.

2007-08-01 09:28:56 AM
When I was in school (in rural Indiana), it was called 'pre-partying'. When I was home from school, it didn't have a name. It was just "Come by at eight or nine and we'll go to the club at like ten."

She said a crackdown on sales promotions and underage alcohol sales would not be enough to stop the problem because many youngsters would still get alcohol from friends and relatives.

QFT. Go raise your farking kids properly.

Why does this lady suggest getting rid of alcohol promotions, while still saying it won't actually change anything?

i'm alaska. not west coast really... a smorgasbord of slang mostly.

but everyone i knew also called it "prefunking". or "prefunk" as in : "so... are we all meeting at your house to prefunk or what?"

never even heard of "pregaming" or "preloading" until i read these comments honestly.

2007-08-01 10:13:04 AM
front-loading...
in addition to all of the above

I haven't yet outgrown this proven method of cutting booze costs by up to 80%. Granted the methods aren't generally as extreme as 15 yrs ago.

/get on my lawn (and have a couple before we hit the bar)

2007-08-01 10:28:40 AM
Pre-loading sounds lame, Pre-gaming sounds even more lame. If we call it anything where I'm from it is just pre-drinking. Usually it's just "hey want to come over to my place and have a few drinks before going out?"
