Fair enough that he can't be a street cop when he lacks smelling ability. But couldn't he be given an administrative job if he wanted?

/Also, I'm surprised he survived a motorcycle accident with that little damage.

anosmia.

If he lost his ability to shizzle, would it be anusmia?

This makes sense. Now the police force has to hire a new guy whose job it is to call in a fresh batch of Krispy Kremes.

All parties involved seem reasonable and respectful towards each other. It's almost like this dispute is actually civil.

poor bastard.

To go thru life and never be able to smell your own farts.

I had a roommate that lost his sense of smell when someone sucker punched him and he hit the back of his head on the curb. I guess it had it's good parts and bad parts. It definitely made it easier for him to eat health food. He started buying the cheapest beer too.

Sucks for this cop though..especially with the amount of lardass cops running around. I can see the Commissioners' concern, but damn at least offer him another position. Surely there's something for him.

As long as he can still hand out the taser'ins...

This is a silly and trivial thing, even for a beat cop. My guess is there's a real reason they want to fire him, and it has nothing to do with his sense of smell -- that's just the excuse.

A friend of mine sustained a head injury in a car accident. Now she constantly smells the odor of fresh paint, even when none is present.

DNRTA...

What causes this?? Lost both smell and taste some time back. No trauma that I recall. Taste has come back, say, 15%...smell, nada.

No, I haven't gone to the Dr.....because I'm a wuss about doctors, ok??

I came in here to say the same thing. Why can't they just give him a desk job?

He could just do what every other cop does and lie about it.

"He later said that he was never offered an alternate position in the police department or a disability pension."

/Where's his Union? How many dollars were contributed to politics, not his personal choice, that's why we vote,' just saying'.

you know what i hear can cure loss of smell?
upload.wikimedia.org
just keep hitting him with it until he can smell again.
but if he twitches at all, he's trying to get away, so get 'em with the glock.

Key word(s) here is MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT. You want to ride around on a deathtrap, fine, your perogative. But if you get into an accident, nobody owes you a dime or should make any dispensation for your injuries. He should be fired without a frickin dime of compensation, b/c you do need the sense of smell to be a police officer. Absolutely no allowance should be made for morons who injure themselves engaging in risky recreational activities. Maybe the Corey Lidle Foundation can give him some kind of award. BTW, I detest Bush, the GOP, and I am a big Yankees fan. But he should get nothing - NOT A DAMN THING - for the consequences of his own actions.

Blue Wall of Penis. Anyone who cannot contribute the required quota of DWI tickets is less than a man.

My Dad lost his sense of smell when he was in an explosion in a tunnel and took a frag to the head. He was a civil/environmental engineer. Sucked for him but it was great for me. He couldn't smell how drunk I was and couldn't smell the pot I put in my cigarettes when we were having a smoke together in the basement. Ah, the good old days.

I was born without a sense of smell. It's okay, I didn't want to be a cop anyway. The main side effect is that my shiat don't stink. As far as I know.

2007-07-28 04:45:29 AM
Man, not that I'm a big fan of cops or anything, but if you can't tell whether someone's intoxicated without smelling them you shouldn't be a cop anyway. What if they're whacked out on Xanax, or Oxycontin, or heroin even? There's no smell then, but if you get pulled over for swerving, weaving in and out of traffic, running reds/etc., it's obvious that you either messed up, or you are messed up. A good cop could tell by talking to you.

CBS needs to make this story the basis of a detective drama series IMMEDIATELY.

"In a world where crime stinks... justice can't smell a damn thing."

2007-07-28 10:19:11 AM
So, do they suspend all the cops that have sinus infections or head colds?

2007-07-28 01:00:23 PM
So... what they're saying is cops are useless if they are not efficient DUI revenue generating machines?
Because cops never do things like respond to domestic disputes, or investigate crimes. Things in which the ability to smell alcohol is indispensable.
