Kyrana: Glad your cat came home, safe and unharmed.

I can empathize with the guy from TFA. When I adopted my greyhound at age 10, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 3 weeks later. We had the surgery and I opted to do chemotherapy as well, since thyroid cancer in dogs has a high rate of coming back, and spreading to the lungs. In the two and half years since, he's also pulled through liver crisis, and a month ago a heat stroke where he spiked at 109 degrees- after being outside for only 20 minutes, in the shade. Between my regular vet and my internal medicine specialist I know I've spent well over 7 thousand on this dog. However, he has rebounded from all of it to come back to otherwise very good health. My vets are in agreement that he is a miracle dog and has more lives than a cat.

I don't regret a single penny, and would spend twice as much, as that dog is my canine soulmate and I have never loved, or been loved, nearly so much in my life.

You're wrong. Domesticated cats are not meant to go outside. Most any vet/veterinary assistant/person with common sense will tell you so. Yes, they feel the URGE to go outside; they're still related somewhat to panthers and tigers and lions, for God's sake, and seeing little furry things and feathered things make them want to stalk and hunt.

Mr. Pot: You appear to have contradicted yourself.

Adolf Oliver Nipples: ...Anybody who would pay that kind of money for any reason on a cat is simply too stupid to realize that they don't own the cat anymore, the cat owns them.

Silly, silly man.

Humans don't own cats. Ever. Cats own humans.

wouldn't it be easier to play dress-up with a doll rather than a live animal?

I own a duplex rental and there are many 'cat people' in that area. What happens? they all eventually decide to move to a place that doesn't allow animals. The cats end up in the streets as strays and live by ripping open the trashes of everyone who lives there. This competes with the other 'generous' people who own cats and let them roam the streets, doing the same already.

I love FARK. You could post "dog lovers DIAF" in a dog-related thread, and you would get death threats from dog lovers and probably banned from the site.
But dog lovers do it all the time in cat-related threads.
Go figure.

This is a very special Caturday for me. My bengal cat had been missing for a solid month and just returned home (3 lbs lighter and covered in fleas) on Thursday. He is currently curled up in his basket (on his heating pad, under a quilt I made for him when he was a kitten), taking yet another nap. Thank god I live in the boondocks - I was able to get a vet to see him within a few hours of his return, and for the whopping fee of $41.50, got a full exam, wormer, flea/tick medicine, and some ringworm lotion for him. If he ever thinks he will see the outside world again, he is sadly mistaken.

As much as I dislike cats, I find it sad that you would keep you pet a prisoner. He sounds like an outside cat (or at least a cat that likes the outdoors)... better to let him live the life he wants, even if that means its shorter than you'd like.

Yeah, that makes sense. Let your cat outside when he has a tendency to run off. Thats a smart move when you dont ever want to see your cat again. You cant just let pets do whatever they want, just like you wouldnt let kids do whatever they want. Unless you want your beloved pet to run off or be run over by a car or abused by some kids. I would never let my cat outside, even if i lived in the suburbs.

I love cats, but this whole keep-them-inside thing is just cruel. You walk your dog, even if it is on a leash, because you recognize that the animal wouldn't be happy spending its life inside. But cats, who are just as much natural explorers/predators as dogs are, are somehow supposed to be just fine with staring out your windows all day imagining what life out there must be like? That's not fair. Yes, your cat has an added risk of an early death via car, some dogs, raccoon, sadistic children, etc. But don't we all have an increased risk of death by some random happenstance every time we step outside our homes or get into a car? Yes, but we still do it because we want to live, and we know locking ourselves in the house all our lives may prolong our existence, but it won't be the same as actually living.

As the proud owner of a cat who is an outdoor cat not too far from downtown Toronto, and is also an outdoor cat (sometimes for a night or two at a time) on my family's farm in Quebec, I would much rather she get a chance to live her life and die at age 14 than be kept inside like something fragile and die at age 18 never having set foot in her natural environment.

She's 10 right now and has been going out all her life. She's scuffled with raccoons in the city, hidden (lord only knows where) from howling coyotes and hawks on the farm, hunted rodents and birds with impunity and otherwise led the sort of life that she enjoys. And if she goes out one day and doesn't come home, I'll be very sad. But not as sad as I would be if she was locked inside everyday and I kept coming home to find her staring wistfully out the window.

In short, making your car an indoor-cat, unless you live in some apartment building somewhere right next to a major freeway, is just selfish on your part. If you don't believe me, ask yourself: If I could explain the cost-benefit analysis of this to my cat, and have it fully understand me, what do I think it would choose?

Your cat would be out the door in a heartbeat, off to have a life. If you were nice enough to it, it would also come home. Most cats can handle themselves.

RedEyedWings: I love cats, but this whole keep-them-inside thing is just cruel.

QFT. I never saw this inside-cat thing till I moved to America, over here it's unheard of (as is de-clawing thank gods). Cats need freedom, or they're unhappy, end of. If they bugger off, it's tough, but that's the way it goes. You can't keep an animal in a style that's against its nature, no matter what the risks. Better not to have a cat at all. It's like having a dog and deciding it doesn't need walks.

Every time I click on the Caturday posts it makes me want to get a cat so much. Unfortunately I live in a shoebox of an apartment so it would be like getting another roommate. My next place I get I'm getting a feline. I miss having cats around so much.

I love my cat but I am not a moron. No way in hell would I spend 11k on a cat. I suspect people that would simply never had kids and are confused and think that their cat is a human. If you must spend 11k on something how about giving it to a good cause that may save multiple human lives.

I like animals more than I like most people.

I still donate on a monthly basis to several charities benefiting people (doctors without borders, unicef, local homeless shelter, etc) as well as all my animal charities, but I still like animals better.

You also have to consider that an animal, in particular, a pet- you are wholly responsible for its health and well being. If you do not spend the money to care for it and get it treated, it has no other options at all. It cannot appeal to others, it cannot search for alternatives as a person could. Besides- things like that is what savings are for.
2007-07-28 12:09:04 PM

Oh, but I do own one (well, my wife does), and pretty much always have. Just because I don't like them doesn't mean I like to see them imprisoned for the rest of their lives in order to assuage the fears of the people that supposedly love them.

Let me guess. You put your wife's cat out on the sly, because you hope it won't come back feel sorry for it.
