Perspective is important.

He's not spending $11,000 on healthcare for a pet cat, he's spending $11,000 to keep his happy life tragedy-free.

That's OK. My cat wants to claw your heart out and eat your liver, so it all balances out.

I'd spend any amount of money to save any one of my 5 cats. When my cat Chewy was diagnosed with CRF, I immediately began looking into the kidney transplant option, as she was only 9 and I lived in one of the few cities with a vet school that performed the procedure at the time. Sadly, she was misdiagnosed by a vet who assumed, since I was a student, I wouldn't want to spend all the money needed to get a correct diagnosis, and never offered me the option. By the time the renal lymphoma was properly diagnosed by a competent vet, it was too late to save her. I don't regret a single penny I spent once the correct diagnosis was made by that competent vet, even though I couldn't keep her with me.

/went after the bastard incompetent vet who didn't offer me any diagnostic options and got back every penny, though. He swore from then on out he would offer the testing to every owner. I like to think of that as Chewy's legacy.

Ten years ago, I had a sick cat that needed a CAT scan (har!). The proceedure cost $150. Last year, I had another cat that needed the scan. This time, it cost $950. Why the big difference? My theory is pet health insurance, which is growing in popularity. Just as in human medicine, health insurance is inflationary. If there is a third party payer, the health care providers are going to milk it for all they can. Of course, their agreements with the insurance carriers is that they will not charge non-insured patients less than what they carge the insurance company (to do otherwise is considered insurance fraud in human health insurance). So the cost of care goes up for everyone.

The writer states that cats have no concept of death. He should have been around to witness a younger cat of mine keep vigil for an older one that died last year. He spent the last day of the old girl's life rubbing her paw with his and nuzzling her. When she passed, he mourned for days. While it isn't right to attempt to personify their behavior, we can recognize that they are capable of emotion and have the same basic understanding of life that we do.

I just want to address something from TFA if I could. It'll probably be ignored, but I think it should to be said.

But I was not fully aware of how the same wonderful but costly technologies for prolonging human life are also revolutionizing veterinary care.

It's sort of the other way around. Most of the wonderful stuff prolonging human life developed in the past few centuries was tested originally on animals. Thanks to our ever growing understanding of the relationships between human and non-human animal anatomy/physiology, our medical understanding has grown exponentially faster than it did a few hundred years ago. Even if it's not initially tested on common companion animals like cats/dogs, they can be easily adapted to them.

Also, Mr. Fuzzypaws, that is simply adorable. Is that your kitten? Does he/she have a name?

OK, interesting theory, except that with pet health insurance, the heath care provider doesn't have anything to do with the money. The whole thing is between the pet owner and the insurance company. The owner pays full price for all services, has the vet office fill out a form listing diagnoses and treatments, then when approved, the owner receives reimbursement.

I'm going to suggest that the reason the procedure went up by $900 is that it was done ten years later.

Yeah, I'll go along with that. The night my dog died, my cat laid down right next to her, snuggling and trying to keep the dog warm. Found them the next morning, the cat trying to wake the dog by meowing and licking her face as she always did. She couldn't grasp that the dog wasn't going to wake up.

Never seen a cat more depressed than I did the following week. She'd lay on the dog's bed for most of that week, mewing pitifully. You hear things about animals not having feelings or a soul, but I call bravo sierra on that.

She also drank like a fish that week...

Good call.

Ode to Spot

Felis Cattus, is your taxonomic nomenclature,
an endothermic quadruped carnivorous by nature?
Your visual, olfactory and auditory senses
contribute to your hunting skills, and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
a singular development of cat communications
that obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
for a rhythmic stroking of your fur, to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
you would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aide in locomotion,
it often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behaviour you display
connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

This is a very special Caturday for me. My bengal cat had been missing for a solid month and just returned home (3 lbs lighter and covered in fleas) on Thursday. He is currently curled up in his basket (on his heating pad, under a quilt I made for him when he was a kitten), taking yet another nap. Thank god I live in the boondocks - I was able to get a vet to see him within a few hours of his return, and for the whopping fee of $41.50, got a full exam, wormer, flea/tick medicine, and some ringworm lotion for him. If he ever thinks he will see the outside world again, he is sadly mistaken.

Good call.

Ode to Spot

Felis Cattus, is your taxonomic nomenclature,
an endothermic quadruped carnivorous by nature?.
Your visual, olfactory and auditory senses
contribute to your hunting skills, and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
a singular development of cat communications
that obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
for a rhythmic stroking of your fur, to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
you would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.

-Data, "Schisms"

I despise cats with every part of my being and would shoot them on sight if I didn't live in town. Cats are the manifestation of Satan on Earth.

Anybody who would "fall in love" with a cat is a damn fool. Anybody who would pay that kind of money for any reason on a cat is simply too stupid to realize that they don't own the cat anymore, the cat owns them.

Yeah, that makes sense. Let your cat outside when he has a tendency to run off. Thats a smart move when you dont ever want to see your cat again. You cant just let pets do whatever they want, just like you wouldnt let kids do whatever they want. Unless you want your beloved pet to run off or be run over by a car or abused by some kids. From TFA:

"Sometimes they find you, not vice versa."

That is so true. Plenty of cats have passed in and out of my life, but the one who stayed the longest -- all 15 years of her life -- came to our house as a stray kitten and made herself at home. We always said that she adopted us, not the other way around. She was an extremely dignified animal who also had a couple of humorously clumsy moments. She loved warm milk (and would give you a haughty, disgusted look if you served her cold milk) and being outdoors all the time.

When she became sick with feline leukemia, I immediately decided to have her put to sleep. She was sick and suffering, and it was awful to watch. The vet said that we could shell out a lot of money, and he could keep her alive for 3 months at the most. I chose to not torture her. I wasn't there when she passed, but I consoled myself by imagining how it must have been for her to feel the pain slip away, then everything quietly fade away.

My Tippy was born on a farm in rural Indiana. While she liked to wander around outdoors as a kitten, she still wanted to be inside where all the people (and nummy people treats) were. We let her wander in and out as she pleased.

I moved to a subdivision when Tippy was almost three months old. There are more cars going down this street in an hour than what went down our road in an entire day in the country. Our yard is maybe 1/4 to 1/5 of what it was at the farm. There are far more hazards here than there were back home (storm drains, lawn fertilizer, giant dogs, construction equipment, etc.), and I don't feel safe letting her on the screened-in porch, let alone outside.

There are many places where it is not safe to let your pets outside. Would you let your cat roam through NYC?

Are you sure you have a valid link to a pic at an image hosting site? (And please use something other than photobucket, their bandwidth gets killed by FARK threads. I recommend Flickr myself.) But as long as you have a valid image link, just select the text of it, click the purple HTML assistant button that looks like a picture frame, and it automatically puts the HTML in for you. If you don't have the HTML assistant buttons, turn them on in your profile. Here's an example of the HTML looks on one of my pics, before preview: <img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/13/18132832_caccfd3d8e_t.jpg"> (I left HTML disabled so you could see it, if I enabled it, it would resolve to a picture.)

You're wrong. Domesticated cats are not meant to go outside. Most any vet/veterinary assistant/person with common sense will tell you so. Yes, they feel the URGE to go outside; they're still related somewhat to panthers and tigers and lions, for God's sake, and seeing little furry things and feathered things make them want to stalk and hunt.

You're right. It's far better to imprison the poor creature where he can die of a broken heart, pining to do the things he was meant to do rather than letting him have some semblance of freedom.

Asshattery and ignorant. That animal would much rather be inside, warm, dry, tick and flea free, with clean water, lots of attention, and plenty of food.

Oh, but I do own one (well, my wife does), and pretty much always have. Just because I don't like them doesn't mean I like to see them imprisoned for the rest of their lives in order to assuage the fears of the people that supposedly love them.

Kyrana: Glad your cat came home, safe and unharmed.

I can empathize with the guy from TFA. When I adopted my greyhound at age 10, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 3 weeks later. We had the surgery and I opted to do chemotherapy as well, since thyroid cancer in dogs has a high rate of coming back, and spreading to the lungs. In the two and half years since, he's also pulled through liver crisis, and a month ago a heat stroke where he spiked at 109 degrees- after being outside for only 20 minutes, in the shade. Between my regular vet and my internal medicine specialist I know I've spent well over 7 thousand on this dog. However, he has rebounded from all of it to come back to otherwise very good health. My vets are in agreement that he is a miracle dog and has more lives than a cat.

I don't regret a single penny, and would spend twice as much, as that dog is my canine soulmate and I have never loved, or been loved, nearly so much in my life.

wouldn't it be easier to play dress-up with a doll rather than a live animal?

I own a duplex rental and there are many 'cat people' in that area. What happens? they all eventually decide to move to a place that doesn't allow animals. The cats end up in the streets as strays and live by ripping open the trashes of everyone who lives there. This competes with the other 'generous' people who own cats and let them roam the streets, doing the same already.

As much as I dislike cats, I find it sad that you would keep you pet a prisoner. He sounds like an outside cat (or at least a cat that likes the outdoors)... better to let him live the life he wants, even if that means its shorter than you'd like.

Yeah, that makes sense. Let your cat outside when he has a tendency to run off. Thats a smart move when you dont ever want to see your cat again. I love cats, but this whole keep-them-inside thing is just cruel. You walk your dog, even if it is on a leash, because you recognize that the animal wouldn't be happy spending its life inside. But cats, who are just as much natural explorers/predators as dogs are, are somehow supposed to be just fine with staring out your windows all day imagining what life out there must be like? That's not fair. Yes, your cat has an added risk of an early death via car, some dogs, raccoon, sadistic children, etc. But don't we all have an increased risk of death by some random happenstance every time we step outside our homes or get into a car? Yes, but we still do it because we want to live, and we know locking ourselves in the house all our lives may prolong our existence, but it won't be the same as actually living.

As the proud owner of a cat who is an outdoor cat not too far from downtown Toronto, and is also an outdoor cat (sometimes for a night or two at a time) on my family's farm in Quebec, I would much rather she get a chance to live her life and die at age 14 than be kept inside like something fragile and die at age 18 never having set foot in her natural environment.

She's 10 right now and has been going out all her life. She's scuffled with raccoons in the city, hidden (lord only knows where) from howling coyotes and hawks on the farm, hunted rodents and birds with impunity and otherwise led the sort of life that she enjoys. And if she goes out one day and doesn't come home, I'll be very sad. But not as sad as I would be if she was locked inside everyday and I kept coming home to find her staring wistfully out the window.

In short, making your car an indoor-cat, unless you live in some apartment building somewhere right next to a major freeway, is just selfish on your part. If you don't believe me, ask yourself: If I could explain the cost-benefit analysis of this to my cat, and have it fully understand me, what do I think it would choose?

Your cat would be out the door in a heartbeat, off to have a life. If you were nice enough to it, it would also come home. Most cats can handle themselves.

RedEyedWings: I love cats, but this whole keep-them-inside thing is just cruel.

QFT. I never saw this inside-cat thing till I moved to America, over here it's unheard of (as is de-clawing thank gods). Cats need freedom, or they're unhappy, end of. If they bugger off, it's tough, but that's the way it goes. You can't keep an animal in a style that's against its nature, no matter what the risks. Better not to have a cat at all. It's like having a dog and deciding it doesn't need walks.

I love my cat but I am not a moron. No way in hell would I spend 11k on a cat. I suspect people that would simply never had kids and are confused and think that their cat is a human. If you must spend 11k on something how about giving it to a good cause that may save multiple human lives.

I like animals more than I like most people.

I still donate on a monthly basis to several charities benefiting people (doctors without borders, unicef, local homeless shelter, etc) as well as all my animal charities, but I still like animals better.

You also have to consider that an animal, in particular, a pet- you are wholly responsible for its health and well being. If you do not spend the money to care for it and get it treated, it has no other options at all. It cannot appeal to others, it cannot search for alternatives as a person could. Besides- things like that is what savings are for.

My mother's cat stayed with our horse the entire night as he died. They were an odd pair, but again, the cat didn't eat for days and just howled in the barn, waiting for Chief to come inside.

I have dogs and cats... I take my dogs outside because I don't want them to crap in the house. They are only outside for about 20 min at a time. We go for walks, but that's exercise for the big dogs. The little dogs walk a block and sit down. They run around the house.
The cats don't go outside. We are military and have dragged the cats to four states and across the ocean 4 times.. we now live in a place with way too much road kill. I wouldn't let the cats outside anyway...and ..newsflashiathey are not miserable. They purr and eat and sleep in the lovely air conditioned house.

No one knows what cats want, so everyone should stop presuming they do. I pay the vet bills for my 3 so I get to choose what I feel is best for them.

Well, to each his own, but some of us think of our pets as members of the family, and you wouldn't put Grandma down just because she's an inconvenience for needing dialasys, would you? And before you fall back on the "argument" that pets aren't people, you're right. They're not people. But they're sentient beings capable of feeling emotion and pain. And anyone that can't have basic sympathy for their own pets is a sorry excuse for a human in my book.

My two cats never leave the house. They were brought up in a location that was too close to a major thoroughfare, and now they're 9 years old (they're bruddahs). Even though I live in a quiet neighborhood now, they have no interest in going outside if I physically take them. They think they're going to the vet and start crying. They will, on occasion wander down the steps to the front door if I'm out on the porch having a smoke. They never leave the porch though, and they're very skittish about being out in the fresh air. It was only this last year that they even attempted to come down the stairs to hang with me out side. It was rather cute how they'd take one stair at a time until they were meowing at the glass door. I still don't know that I'd let them out for a day or anything. They wouldn't know how to cope. All they know is AC, laying around, and scratching my furniture.

I don't have pics of all the cat jungle gym stuff. My bedroom walls are basically a series of carpeted cat ramps and shelves, some perched at an angle so they can "climb" the wall. There's one shelf (the one pictured with the blue feather string hanging from it) that is the most popular. They all try to get to it first for sleepy time. Fortunately none of them (out of 4) has fallen yet, I put a safety rail on the highest because the "Boy" is a bit on the "short bus" side. And no... birds figured out pretty quick to stay away from the feeder. The box has a plexiglass top so the overhead view isn't obstructed. The occasional squirrel will stop by to taunt mercilessly. The second window box I built (for a neighbor) was much larger and luxury class. It had outdoor carpeting, a scratching post, and I actually sanded off the lumberyard stamps. NOt to get all sappy on Caturday, but I'm convinced my cats were a cosmic "gift". The orca was an SPCA rescue, and the 3 black ones were "found" under the deck by by one of my dogs just about 6 weeks after my beloved first SPCA rescue dog passed away. The vet said they appeared to be 6 weeks old. The feral mom cat hung around the area for a while, but we could never catch her. Long story boring, I know...

Some of you people don't like cats. That's fine, you're welcome to that. However, when I see some of the posts where people are talking about "I'd shoot a cat if I could" or "I want to kill cats", you're a big douche. Seriously, go listen to your Toby Keith CD and flex in the mirror with your pre-broken-in straw cowboy hat and a tallboy of Natural Light and blow smoke up your own ass about what a tough guy you are, whilst you jerk your chain to fantasies of shooting cats.

I've got a serious issue with people like that. Just like the kids back in elementary school who thought it was funny to talk about burying cats up to their heads and running them over with a lawnmower. I punched a few of them in the face.

Sick, cruel bastards.

Regarding the story:

I'm an atheist, so I don't think we have souls, and I don't think cats do either. They're also completely driven by an over-the-top selfishness in virtually everything they do. But, I have an outside cat who was shot by some asshole with a BB gun. Completely broke his rear right leg, the larger bone (fibia?). I paid $3000 to fix him up out of a $17,000 stock option cash out which, besides my 401k, is about all the savings I have to show for 10 years of work. It's been six months and I still haven't managed to replace that money, but as the only other option was amputation or death. I did what I had to do. I did not feel as if there was a choice. I had a major falling out with my girlfriend who said "it's just a free cat."

The cat doesn't even like me. But who else is going to do it? He's got 3 siblings that would miss him.

I think it is clear from the article that we need universal health care for cats. No other pets: just cats. Families shouldn't have to deal with the loss of their little Fluffy just because she has a brain tumor. Veterinarians should stop at nothing to keep these little bundles of happy alive even if it's just for a few more days. Sorry for the rant: I just bought stock in the company that makes those cone things that keep pets from licking their wounds.

there is a stray kitten who is trying to adopt us. She is really cute but we can't have cats. So uh... if you want her you can come get her.
She's maybe two pounds. Orange and cream calico swirl pattern. Gold eyes. Very cute and kitten like.
All by herself in the big bad world.
pitiful really.

madgecko13 Why do people who hate cats come to cat threads to state how much they hate cats and catowners? I mean, that's just stupid!

Heading off to a football thread to announce its stupid, astoundingly homo-erotic, how much I hate it and how anyone who watches football is a stupid dumbhead. Sheesh.

I completely agree with this statement. Football is completely asinine, played by a bunch of overpaid testosterone bags. I'd say more, but I dread the @ home flamewar that may start by my rabid Colts fan hubby. The advantage is that I have lots of time for carpentry projects during football season.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure that despite the "funny" pictures of cats, he'll have to continue beating himself off with a stick.

Okay about this indoor cat and outdoor cat thing...

A cat came dashing out of a fence and I collided with him. In a car. It was a 30 minute drive to the Vet while the cat howled in pain in the backseat. The veterinarian's office called the people on the tag- who said they had been worried since "Dipsy usually returns in a couple of days, and he had been gone for the week". Dipsy incidently was also an unneutered MALE.

Dipsy suffered horribly for a while before he was euthanized. And weeks later, I am still wallowing in a volatile mixture of anger, guilt and shame.

So yeah cerberus9 has his beliefs about pet ownership, but I'd rather not be responsible for any cat/dog deaths, and I would really like it if you kept your cats and dogs indoors, or leashed. Toys are great for mental stimulation. Keep your cats/dogs mentally stimulated with toys/play and physically stimulated with exercise. It is not just the pet owner who suffers when a cat or dog gets run over.

/Any comments about being a female driver and this specific combination of traits causing the death of an animal- will be ignored.

After reading other comments, I should add:

1. He was neutered before being let out
2. We didn't want to let him out and kept the other 3 in, but it was very hard and he was persistent
3. We learned our lesson and he's now an inside cat, and it breaks my heart to see it. But too bad. Play with your siblings you little sh*t! :)

I've paid over $600 in vet bills before, and I'm just a college student. Yay for student aid. My 3 month old kitten's kidneys started failing on her mysteriously, and she had to have them flushed out, uber IV-style. She got better, and it turns out that she's got some genetic dysfunction that makes vaccinations a near-fatal experience, hence the renal failure. She's 15 months old now, and I believe by the time she's five or six I'll have earned that money back by not having to vaccinate her. So yes, I'd pay ridiculous amounts of money for my cat, but probably not when they're older. 3 months old, though? Yes.

And if that doctor-person wants to be humane to his eerily human-like kitty, why doesn't he just ease her suffering and let her go? She must have endured a great deal of pain until now, but unlike humans, she can't ask him to please stop this treatment. He wants to keep her alive because she pleases him or whatever, farktard, and pats himself on the back and claims it's all in the name of being humane. It's unreal what degree of self-delusion people are capable of.

2007-07-28 04:11:25 PM
Man, I understand not paying 11k for a pet...depending on the circumstances of course, and the financial situation of the owner. Me, I have insurance on my cat. I did that after paying 5 grand to fix a problem. Hell, I might not even spend 11k on myself if I got sick... Besides, my saturday mornings consist of scolling through the caturday thread while my cat sits on my lap... thats worth some money to me.

Also on the indoor/outdoor cat thing. My cats are indoor cats. There are coyotes where we live, and they tend to eat cats... or dogs.. or just about anything smaller then them. So, no outside for the kitties.

these are our two cats: lightning and poptart. poptart (the fat ass to the right) is my cat. lightning in the foreground, is my brothers.

lightning is a diabetic. cats can get diabetes. he needs insulin shots twice a day. in enters my dad. thats his favorite activity every day: shooting up his cat. and if he is off by a couple of minutes, he freaks out. quite funny.

lightning is now treated like an indoor dog: you call, he comes. you lay down food, then shoot him up. i dont even want to phathom the annual cost of insulin and treats to coax him in to get the shot plus medical bills for the vet to shoot up the cat while were out of town...

We have a new kitten. (Pictured above, posed in the coffeepot.) We found him as a feral and, while the outdoors are a little too dangerous, we don't want him to miss out on nature. So we've built a little collapsible screened cat-pen (about 7 by 7 feet,) and we let him have 'outside time' in that. He mostly sleeps in the sunshine or chases the odd bird that perches on the mesh. We are also training him to walk on a leash with a cat harness, and it's going well.

The weird thing is that he prefers the cat gym we built inside out of Aldi boxes and duct tape. Maybe it's the air conditioning. Some cats really do prefer life indoors.

2007-07-28 10:24:10 PM
My cats are all outdoor cats. At least when it's not snowing.
They have joined the neighborhood mafia, and on most nights, you can see all of them on the steps outside my house. I'm pretty sure they are subletting the basement to the skunks, and the attic to the raccoons. The bear hasn't been around in a while... wonder what they did to get him to go away...

But they haven't chased off the dear, and that's all I really care about.

eddyatwork: I used to like cats until I came to Fark. Now I hate them. FARK CATS! I want to punch every cat in the face!

I think you've misunderstood things a bit.

The cats in all those pictures don't actually endorse the messages presented, it's some silly humans making and posting them.

Indoor cats can be happy ... it just means more work for the owner. If you want to let your cat out it should be on a leash. An alternative to a leash is to build a cat enclosure like this:

http://www.cat-world.com.au/cat-worldenclosures.htm

Otherwise your cat will do what comes naturally, namely kill birds, etc. I have read that North American cats may kill as many as a billion songbirds in North America per year. This article says hundreds of millions:

http://digg.com/environment/Cats_More_Lethal_to_Birds_Than_Wind_Turbines

And this one says that cats kill between 50 and a 150 million in Wisconsin alone:

http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/cats.htm

In many parts of North America, common songbirds are disappearing and outdoor cats are a large reason why.

Also, I can understand wanting your cat to be free but that means the possibility of your cat lying in ditch for hours with a shattered body waiting to die. And that is no kindness.

I can second the lengths a cat owner would go for a cat. About a year ago our cat ran off. We spent several hundred dollars in full color posters, a night vision camera and a new VCR, Nighttime feedings, hundreds of hours searching, going through the densest jungles of Lamma Island, a US$600 reward offering, talking to pet detectives in the US and a pet psychic who told us our cat was dead.

I think I know why he ran away, the animal shelter does an alley cat project. One of the strays in our neighborhood had kittens. The alley cat people captured them where they spay and neuter cats and release them into areas where people would care for them. They released the 4 kittens and another one from HK Island. It was weird, the bond between the mother and the kittens were broken. When they came back, they wanted nothing to do with each other. I think our cat seeing all these new cats and me and my girlfriend feeding them caused him to runaway in a fit of jealousy.

I still remember seeing him the night he ran away, I was going to call him in, but it was still early so I figured he could stay out later. (yes, we still would have let him stay outside, he was jumping off the second floor balcony to get outside, he had his kitty friends).

We had one of our two cats put down recently. About 7 years ago, we spent about $1000 after he developed a bladder stone and pancreatitus. He had recently been dropping weight and not eating much, and the bloodwork showed kidney problems. So we had to give him fluids every day, which he didn't particularly enjoy, but it made him much happier overall. One morning he was very skittish and acting strangely, and was off his food. Took him in and had blood work done (and they said his BP was very high). That afternoon he was on his favorite rug, had urinated, and hadn't moved out of it. That was enough of a quality of life issue that we decided it was time. Since this was over the course of a few months, I didn't total up the costs, but I'm sure we dropped another $1000.

As for cats going outside...it's fine if you have a farm and the cats are there to keep the rodents out of the barn. But for a house cat, there are a lot of reasons to keep them inside. Not only is there the risk to the cat, but a roaming cat will annoy others by crapping in their gardens or leaving critter parts around. Roaming cats can also have a significant impact on native bird populations. Finally, an outdoor cat can bring in diseases that can impact humans, like toxoplasmosis.

To be honest, I'm more worried about my neighbor (a hippy who we finally cajoled into bathing, but still only uses cold water... ugh) tracking in random diseases. Or how my other neighbor (also a hippy, but she bathes more often than the other) refuses to kill the black widows that keep getting in. I have a secret stash of Raid. And they can't figure out how to flush the farking toilet, either.

As for song birds... have you ever had a song bird with babies in your roof? For years because no one can get them out? I don't really like song birds.

Besides- cats are having fun dismembering damn spitting grass hoppers. If only they could take out that damn wood pecker...

Outlaw2097: lightning is a diabetic. cats can get diabetes. he needs insulin shots twice a day. in enters my dad. thats his favorite activity every day: shooting up his cat. and if he is off by a couple of minutes, he freaks out. quite funny.

lightning is now treated like an indoor dog: you call, he comes. you lay down food, then shoot him up. i dont even want to phathom the annual cost of insulin and treats to coax him in to get the shot plus medical bills for the vet to shoot up the cat while were out of town...

I too have a diabetic cat. We call her twice daily feedings the "bleed and feed". She honestly doesn't mind being poked in the ear that much, and she barely notices the shot. Micro is 17 now, has been getting the shots for about 5 years. She is otherwise healthy and happy.

Outlaw, look up "glargine insulin for cats". We buy one bottle per year, about $75, we give her 1-3 units per day. The Walgreen's test strips are less than half the cost of most other blood test strips, needles are cheap at Costco, and Fancy Feast is a really great food for diabetic cats. If you need more info, email me privately.

We kept Milo inside for the first two years of his life because we did, in fact, live in a suburb right next to a freeway. When I was seven, I was allowed to take him outside on the screened-in porch while I held him if it was nice out, and I did it often, but he didn't get to roam.

When we moved to a place with some acreage, we installed a kitty door so Milo and Zeus, the new addition, could go outside as they pleased. Zeus didn't give two shiats about it, even when we'd give him treats to go through it. He much preferred the indoors with his bed and kitty toys.

Milo went outside exactly once, to chase a squirrel. He went through the door, pounced, and then looked around and just FROZE. Then he started meowing pitifully, like the part-Siamese he is, refusing to move. I wanted to go out to him but my parents told me eventually he'd get used to it, just let him explore. Thirty minutes later they got sick of the caterwauling and let me pick him up and bring him inside.

Since then, he fights you when you try to take him outside. Once he jumped out of my arms and made a beeline for the kitty door to get back inside. Perhaps I have the only agoraphobic cat in the world, but my cats are indoor cats by their own choices. Or were, anyway--Zeus had a stroke that rendered him a vegetable and we had to put him down, and Milo's old and feeble now--he will likely die within the year.

But Caturday is for lolcats, not arguments!

TikiAndTorch : Oscar cuts it a bit close but he's never been wrong 24/24 as of that interview today?
For those who missed, Oscar lives in a nursing home and as soon as he decides its time to join someone in their bed the nurses know tat there is 2-4 hours left at they better get the relatives.

I think Animal Planet ran something close to it, But I think he was mainly a pain reliever I can't remember if he shared the reapers sense.

That Article writer is full of it, as for 11k it would depend on if I had the money.
Indoor/Outdoor most of the cats I have had have been Indoor cats
If I owned a house with a yard I would bury one of those perimeter cables they sell and CHIP IMPLANT even those that are meant to be inside, I have an SRO, and am really up in the air (possible as care cat) but I would then have to hire someone to change the litter -weakest constitution you have ever seen.

+ cat, much larger room than a cage, could hire someone weekly to clean room
- SRO,2 rooms 1+bath, litter box, would need to screen the windows
- cleaner $40-50?, just 1 cat (ideal 3, who to play with who, whose napping just not in mood)

help!!
Kind of serious here need to run it through my mind

whisk666: I'd spend any amount of money to save any one of my 5 cats.

I like to think of that as Chewy's legacy.

and you sure, a moron. Get a new farking cat and get over it.

There is no reason not to keep your cat indoors, except maybe your sanity if the cat REALLY wants to go out. When your cat gets out, it can end up getting hit in the street, or eating something poisonous. There are people who shoot at cats they think are strays, mostly because loose cats kill a lot of wildlife.
