Guns are pretty easy to use. I don't need any help at all in firing one, but thanks, Joe Biden!

What a stupid troll headline. Joe Biden said that about an obvious nutso who was caressing his submachine gun and calling it 'baby'

I just clicked the link. We're greenlighting Malkin now?

What a bunch of baloney. Biden may have been snide in his comment, but the guy on the video question was a bit of a nut. Ask a question in a silly way, get a snide answer. It's not the best approach for campaigning but it doesn't say anything about how the candidate feels about gun control.

Both Richardson and Biden said they support instant background checks for criminal and mental health histories. Malkin must have been watching a different debate than I was.

For this useless party spin machine hack to call someone else "snide" is the height of hypocrisy.

***

He ran so fast from his record, you could see the Road Runner puff of cartoon smoke billowing at the base of his podium.

"The issue here, I believe, is instant background checks," Richardson sputtered.

Cooper rescued him by turning to The Smirk from Delaware.

On a video which they submit for national broadcast, addressed to Presidential candidates during a debate?

I love guns, but sorry, that weirdo deserved a snide answer.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I would take Coulter's nonsense over Malkin's any day. Malkin is just a bitter, angry little woman. I think she may have penis envy.

/oh, was i being "snide"?

It was the fact that the guy had an AK47-like machine gun and called it his "baby" that Joe Biden immediately said, "Wow, that guy needs help."

2007-07-25 10:50:46 AM
Eh, this gun owner didn't get any sense that my right to own a gun was in danger from the debate...

I usually get a long fairly well with all the folks down at the range (even though we generally don't see eye to eye politically a lot of times), but, I have to say, some of them are some of the most paranoid bastards I've ever met.

I call my car many four-letter words, but rarely "baby."

It was an AR-15, not an AK-47 and it was not a machine gun.

Would the guy have seemed more sane if it was a nicely engraved shotgun and he appeared on camera in a suit?

I'll repost this from the other gun thread:

As a bleeding heart, environmentalist, pro-gay rights, pro-choice, etc. "Lib", I think the whole gun control thing is completely farked up.

Delivering the 2nd Amendment a death of a thousand cuts via gun control legislation is bad, bad law.

We need to have a national dialogue about whether or not we as a country still want the 2nd Amendment.

The 2nd Amendment is not about hunting, not about protecting yourself from a mugger, not about recreation, not about being a collector.

The 2nd Amendment is about killing people that threaten the security and freedom of the State.

If you don't agree with gun ownership explicitly for the purposes of ensuring security and freedom, then just say that you do want that aspect of the Constitution repealed.

At least have the integrity to come out and say it.

Jon Snow: The 2nd Amendment is about killing people that threaten the security and freedom of the State.

yeah. and that's a good thing to have in the constitution.

ownership of arms is a basic right of a free person--just because it's 220 years later doesn't make that right less basic

Jagorev: What a stupid troll headline. Joe Biden said that about an obvious nutso who was caressing his submachine gun and calling it 'baby'

Use the correct terms before calling the guy nutso. It was an assault rifle.

I have been apt to call my favorite gun my baby, my hotrod is definitely my baby. He used the term to bait a trap and Joe stepped in it. Still pissed that the question was not given to Obama, after Joe (on the dem side) he scares me most about their 2nd amendment stances.

albo: ownership of arms is a basic right of a free person--just because it's 220 years later doesn't make that right less basic

But even the explicit rights provided for in the Constitution have their limits. Think of the Free Speech vs. "Fire" In the Theater example. While everyone has an inherent right to gun ownership, I see nothing wrong with resticting that right when the need for the public good outweighs it. And restricting it for criminals and the mentally unstable helps further that.

The problem, obviously, is that it isn't in the Government's interests to see it upheld in the spirit of its intent. That is why you don't see Republicans or Democrats in the public eye to revisit Miller.

The Miller ruling is utter shiate. Are we allowed to have militia weapons or not? Is yes, why doesn't that supercede the NFA?

Diogenes: see nothing wrong with resticting that right when the need for the public good outweighs it. And restricting it for criminals and the mentally unstable helps further that.

i have no problem with reasonable regulation of firearms. it's when that regulationgoes so far as to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens. and that is a huge open area to debate--where does that line exist, at what point on the continuum does the state start to have a compelling interest?

Jon Snow: We need to have a national dialogue about whether or not we as a country still want the 2nd Amendment.

Yes!

I think a good, modern, Constitutional Convention is in order. No references to what the founding fathers wanted, just a way for us to decide as a country if we still want the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 10th amendments, etc. in their original form.

While I personally favor keeping all of them, and perhaps adding some more protections to claify things in the modern world, I would much rather keep the rule of law and just get rid of that which we have no intention of following, than to put the entire constitution in jeopardy by cherry-picking.

2 things:

1) I've called my girlfriend, my car, and my S&W .44 Magnum "my baby"...and I'm 100% mentally healthy, I assure you.

2) The guy was just making a joke. It was a spoof on how certain people want to ban guns "for the children".

One of the marks of schizophrenia is the ability to conceal one's sociopathic tendencies for short periods when interacting with another person.

It is when the schizophrenic is alone that his true nature becomes more apparent.

Beginning to think we should teach gun safety courses in high schools. Kind of like sex-ed, there are way too many metro sexual pansies out there spouting off all types of crap they have no clue about.

I wish it was mandatory in school.

We have drivers ed, sex ed and some schools are starting stuff like credit cards and rent. Firearms should be something explained and demystified in school.

REOIV: We have drivers ed, sex ed and some schools are starting stuff like credit cards and rent.

While we're at it, let's throw in law. Not this "civics" shiat, but a basic Case Law course should be offered in high school. Someone here once said this, so I can't take credit for the idea, but I wholeheartedly agree. Learning how to read and interpret the law is highly valuable individually and the body politic at large.

But then again, people may just learn what their rights are. We can't have that.

Grew up in Texas, and, yes , we did have "Hunting & Firearm Safety" class in public schools (8th Grade).

Does that make Texas "progressive"?

Are you guys that thick-headed you couldn't see the obvious analogy this guy was making to the leftwing arguement on banning guns for the "sake of the children" (i.e. babies).

I'm sure this guy doesn't casually called his rifle his "baby" in day to day conversation. Chrissake get over it..

2007-07-25 01:04:35 PM
I thought the guy filled one of 2 stereotypes:

1. He was a nut. He legit thought wondered that if a Democrat were elected the first thing they'd do is revoke 2nd amendment rights.

2. He was putting on a face to get a rise out of certain candidates and he did, congratulations.

If it's number one, he needs to actually research candidates beyond what he hears at he's local NRA rally, and if it's number 2 than he's just a shiat disturber.

just for context:
As a canadian gun owner, let me just say: Your 2nd amendment makes no sense.

Also, its the only article in the bill of rights that conservatives are willing to defend.
and NONE of them defend it in the context of its original intent. It always turns into some kind of bravado dick-waving about people would do if something went bump in the night in their houses.

GaryPDX, I'm looking in your direction.

Is everyone here so stupid that they can't see why he called it his baby? Obviously he wanted them to think he was in favor of gun control to protect his baby and then surprise them when he pulled out a gun. Jagorev: What a stupid troll headline. Joe Biden said that about an obvious nutso who was caressing his submachine gun and calling it 'baby'

Maybe I didn't get a good look, but it looked like an AR-15 to me. How did you determine that it was actually a submachine gun, and what model firearm was it, exactly?

2007-07-25 01:37:26 PM
It was the fact that the guy had an AK47-like machine gun and called it his "baby" that Joe Biden immediately said, "Wow, that guy needs help."

The firearm displayed was neither an AK-47 nor a "machine gun". It wasn't even an AK-47 lookalike.

At least try to understand firearms issues before you think yourself qualified to opine on teh subject.
