KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHN!!!!
KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHN!!!!
KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHN!!!!

Politically, Shane says, there was no way that Kahn, with the support of the Carter administration, should have succeeded. But they put together an unlikely coalition of liberals who were willing to go against the wishes of organized labor to bring low fares to the masses and conservatives willing to buck captains of industry and Wall Street to reduce government's active involvement in the economy.

Seriously, this rocks. I wish there would be a sequel.

MasterThief: /The Search for Real, Honest, No-shiat Free Markets

I'm no economist, and I don't even play one on the Intertubes, but I'll hazard a guess that deregulation "works" with flight prices for (relative) lack of monopoly as well as number of alternatives to flying as a means of transportation.

/I expect gubment subsidies, providing air traffic control, security, etc., don't hurt either...
//Free market? Bosh.

Bingo. Free markets work where the market can act freely, which is not everywhere (try bartering for the lowest price when you've just had a heart attack).

So this guy caused 9/11?

2007-07-24 04:07:29 PM
This guy is awesome, i sat down with him about 2 weeks ago in collegetown (right by cornell campus in ithaca) and had a beer with him. I live sorta near his office, so when i saw him at the bar, i said hello. He's one of the smartest people i've ever sat and talked to.

Suck-it commies!

Ithaca is like 35 miles from where I am.

It's like a freakin' communist paradise. I think there's two Republicans in the whole place and they have them tied to a pole in the center of town.

Actually, there's a town square called the Ithaca Commons. It's nice except since it's a free hangout, it attracts the riff-raff. In Ithaca, "Riff-Raff" is 8-foot tall guys with more piercings than Dennis Rodman having an insecurity attack, dressed head to toe in black, with black fingernail polish and white face paint - even in 1995!

One time on Halloween night I went up to Ithaca and made it a point to walk around in khakis and a polo shirt. If anyone asked, I told them it was my costume.

Up here the intolerant little progressives have bumper stickers on their gas-guzzling, 40-year-old foreign cars that say "Ithaca, NY: Ten square miles surrounded by reality." And every time I see that, I think to myself, man would that look good on the back of an SUV next to George W. Bush and anti-abortion stickers. Because it's true, but not for the reasons they think.

Free markets work for anything that isn't an essential service.

Essential service being defined as something that, if it is not standardized, centrally-controlled and provided for everyone equally all the time, people will die.

So things like water, electricity, garbage, police, fire and other disaster control, sewage, and basic levels of education, should rightfully be controlled by the state. Oh, and healthcare too.

But flying? Not being able to fly doesn't kill anyone. It just makes them very very late.

Has nothing to do with how 9/11 eliminated any concern about late arrivals, late takeoff, lost luggage, crap service, stews that turn the frickin' plane around if you even think about complaining about them farting in your general direction..

2007-07-24 04:16:02 PM
Thanks for the cheap tickets, mister. No, I'm not interested in your "dungaree puppet show".

2007-07-24 04:16:03 PM
What a bunch of bullshiat. If the "market" had been allowed to function after 9/11 the airlines would be out of business, deservedly since they let it happen, but then W dropped 3 billion into their laps and we're no safer today.
