The Dumbass tag has rarely been this appropropriate. It's hard to beleive that anyone would be so stupid that they wouldn't think that the birth mother might be the prime suspect. That three of them didn't think that far is almost beyond belief.

If the birth mother changed her mind, would she be likely to win in court? IF not, what if she said that she would devote every waking hour to devising ways to get the baby back? Even if they threaten to put her in jail or a mental hospital, she should just be defiant and say that she'll devote the rest of her life to getting her baby back. 5 years from now, if someone leaves her handcuffs to0 loose, she'll immediately head for her kid. If you were the adoptive parents, do you allow this to occur, knowing that you'd be constantly worried about the kid disappearing into the hands of a more and more estranged mother?

Legally, the birthparent has no recourse. One signs this away before the handing-over occurs.

As far as "ruling out" what they're "capable of," that's some slippery territory. You can't prepare for everything, but legally speaking, making terroristic threats is an offense punishable by imprisonment, and if the birthparent is a credible threat, then the law can keep her locked up for the safety of the child. This seems odd to even have to explain. Are you really that afraid of everyone around you?

Finally, regarding the adoptive parents being "constantly worried," I'm not aware of any parent worth a damn that isn't.

Once again, that's irreversibly. This is why it's such a hard decision to make. This birthmother is obviously having trouble understanding how actions result in consequences. Yes, your baby gets the life that you couldn't give it, but that also means you can't have it anymore. Not yours.

Earpj, if it's not your state, relax. You might want to consider requesting that you can meet the birthparent(s) before accepting their child into your life, and also insisting upon a closed adoption or a "semi-open" arrangement where you can communicate indirectly through the agency. Meeting her/them will give you a pretty clear picture of why they're choosing adoption and can help you minimise your risk of the mother being batshiat and changing her mind like that. Again, the "mother's remorse" laws are fairly uncommon, so ask your agency.

Damn, that's a reoccurring nightmare for me and my wife for our adopted son. The main thing that helps us is knowing that the birthmother is pretty lazy and mostly broke. That being said, we were as careful as can be when we were with her to not give away any information as to our last names and where we lived. Still, anything could happen. We adopted in Iowa and the birthmother had 7 days to change her mind, longest hardest 7 days of our entire lives.

if the natural mother wants the baby back, she shouldn't have to go to these lengths to do it. although I totally support her right to take her baby back whenever and if ever she pleases, this is the wrong way to go about it.
