(News.com.au)   Rio de Janeiro police have killed 652 people in the first half of 2007. That's twice the total kills of New York police for all of 2006, but only a fraction of the number killed by Cecil B. DeMille   (news.com.au) divider line 56

Wait...NYPD actually KILLED over 350 people last year??? As in SHOT someone EVERY DAY???

Jesus farking CHRIST. I live in a city of over a million and our PD averages about 0.33 people killed per year! We have gangs, we have drugs...we even have 2 Puerto Rican guys up in the west side...what the hell is up in NYC?

Guestimate:
NYC = 20 Million, 350 kills per year
Calgary = 1 Million, 1 kill per 3 years
That's a total of 1000:1 overall, or FIFTY TIMES the number of lethal force incidents PER CAPITA!

Something is seriously wrong, there.

Where did they get the NYPD deadly force stat? The number I found for NYPD is much lower than the 325 range they are stating.

New York (the city) is smaller than calgary. Hence a population density that's nearly 9x per square km.

Calgary: 1,360.2/km²
New York: 10,316/km²

Umm...10,000 is BIGGER than 1,000. If your numbers are right, NYC is 10X the size, but 20X the population, which works out to only 2X the density.

Um yeah, population density is measured in people per area.

So, calgary has 1360.2 people per square kilometer of land, while new york has 10316 people per square kilometer. 7.58 times (I actually did the math this time) the amount of people per square kilometer of land.

The overall size of the land mass doesn't matter, what matters is how many people are stuffed into a given area.

I mean, it makes sense since new york city has so many skyscrapers.

/Kansas (the state), has a population density of 12.7 people per square kilometer. But kansas city (the city) has a population density of 443.6 per square kilometer)

I find it most interesting that they cite a "police-civilian kill ratio", as if this is some significant piece of data from which we can determine how successful the police or the criminals are.

Apparently the current ratio is 1 dead cop to 59 dead civilians. But they don't bother to explain whether this is good or bad. I need to know these things.

The Rio police are hardcore. That's where everyone else in the world sends their special forces for in-close urban combat training.

We should pray that things don't ever change in Rio. The drug gangs are so rich and so into their guns that it's the number one marketplace of choice for gun dealers, to the extent that rocket launchers, massively high-powered rifles and other serious tech are not sold on any other black market in the world, essentially keeping the really good stuff out of the hands of potential terrorists who would find that sort of thing very useful. There's an amazing documentary on the City of God DVD that explains this in more detail.

Rio - taking it in the arse for all of us.

That New York figure can't be right. Check out the graph near the bottom of this link. The worst recent year for shootings was 1998 when 850 shots were fired and about 300 bullets hit. Most bullet wounds are not fatal.

WTF the NYC numbers are way, way off.

Between February 1999 and 2006 a total of 102 people were killed in clashes with NYC police officers.

Here are their names for farks sake. They should issue a retraction. And in that same time period, there were around 25 cops killed in the line of duty, another 23 died on 9/11.

Perhaps I was unclear - various special forces units, usually police, get sent to Rio for a particular type of training for which the Rio police are generally regarded as the best in the world. Just because your brother (who I am sure is just like Chuck Norris) didn't go doesn't make me wrong. And just because your brother didn't get sent there doesn't make you any kind of expert on the subject either.

No, you were very clear in your mistaken beliefs. The arms market in Rio is not taking all the guns on planet Earth away from "terrorists". Not even close. My qualifications to judge the veracity of your statement concerning the urban combat training of special forces are not important. What IS important is that you should know that at least one person here on Fark knows that you are full of shiat, buddy. So, if you can show me where the SAS, the GSG-9, the Spetznatz, the Mossad, DEVGRU, Delta Force, S.E.A.L.S, Force Recon, go to Rio to do urban combat training with the police there, please by all means enlighten me. But, you can't. And that is ...........because.........you .......are.........full......of ......shiat!

See, that's what we need in the United States, a police force to keep the low & lower-middle class citizens fenced in & working in the location of our choice, weaponless & poor. It would help reduce population, and if we stick 'em in an area we can coral, it would be like shooting fish in a barrel!

New Orleans would be perfect, anyone?

I'd be prepared to discuss it further with an adult, if you know any. You'd have to leave the room, of course.

So, if you can show me where the SAS, the GSG-9, the Spetznatz, the Mossad, DEVGRU, Delta Force, S.E.A.L.S, Force Recon, go to Rio to do urban combat training with the police there, please by all means enlighten me. The thing is, all those forces you mention? They're all military, not police, and I said "various special forces units, usually police". So there's that. As to what I can show you, the documentary is called "News from a Private War", it's on the City of God DVD. If you watch it, you'll see the police training these people, and you'll see the stockpiles of incredibly high-tech weapons. Whether you believe that when (and if) you see it really doesn't matter to me in the slightest.

Actually, Dogbeast is correct. Most police, SWAT, TNT, etc. go down there for urban training. The people you mentioned are mostly all MILITARY organizations. The military is very likely, as you said, NOT going to go down there.

I'm too lazy to actually look it up but it can't be that many. I mean yeah, there's definitely a few people shot/stabbed/beaten to death/killed in some manner every day, but usually not by the cops.

New York City has about 8.2 million people. There are a few major cities that border on New York, however (Jersey City, Yonkers, White Plains, Newark), and with them and their suburbs the New York metro comes to about 18 million.

What I think LordArgent was trying to say was that New York is smaller in area than Calgary is, in case anybody was still confused.

Uh...it's amazing the microscopic, meaningless topics people can argue about on Fark (Police getting training in Rio? Are you farking kidding me? Who give a shiat...you two get a farking hobby.)

Anywho...seriously Rio may have this "carnival, crazy party reputation" in Europe and NA...but having been down there for work a lot, it is one bat shiat crazy place. Yes...there is a VERY small "party all the time" slice of society down there...but I've been told by some of my older Italian co-workers that on their best day, the Italian mobs don't hold a candle to the gang corruption that happens on a daily basis in Rio.

To summarize thus far:

- Subbie's numbers for NYC were way way off.
- More people are killed by police in NYC than in Calgary.
- NYC has more people and a greater population density than Calgary.
- Police, not military, train in Rio.

Cecil B. DeMilleis as line from the movie Blazing Saddles. This movie is a must see, although it's been copied/imitated so much, it may seem dated, much like Pulp Fiction. You do get to giggle nervously a lot from the frequent n-bombs though.

The murder total for NYC is about 550 a year. There is no way that cops killed over half of them with a 1:1 ratio. They say the ratio is 1:41, which makes the number of cop kills at about 13 a year. I have no idea where they got the 300 number from.
