rburp: Did anybody else think this was about Bill Gates at first?

Yes. There's a lot of people in the world that would like to insert a garden gnome in him

I read "Gates seeks $1.3 billion" and instantly knew it wasn't about Bill Gates.

It's been a monumental fark up. The vehicles work as advertised, they're fine.

The Bush administration just didn't bother order that many under the delusion that victory was just around the corner and no point starting the process to get them because they'll be unnecessary by the time they arrive.

If they got them at the beginning of the war, they'd be out in the field in large numbers already and several hundred lives would've been saved.

So, how long have we been in Iraq and now the Secretary of Defense is asking for armored vehicles?

How about we add a little context and information to the discussion before we start accusations?

Ohhhh, wait, I get it now! We should have been protecting the troops, not just "supporting" them.

/grew up with Vietnam, see disturbing parallels in "body counts."

The Raqies will just build bigger bombs, or just hit troops when they're dismounted.

That's what I would do if some foreign power was trying to occupy America.

I'm glad I was there for the invasion, we took the doors off our Humvee's cause it was so damn hot, didnt have a problem, Iraqi's cant shoot straight, and I was there before the IED makers came back from syria.

After desert storm Saddam sent hundreds of bomb makers to learn how to make ied's in syria. Thats why it took awhile for them to get so bad. I remember the very first IED's were cobbled together pieces of crap, we'd find them, and just shoot em from a hundred feet or so. Either it blow them up, or knocked the fuse train off.

Now they are super advanced, hididng bombs in dead animals, replacing the sidewalk curbs w/ roadside bombs... wireless detonation. It's spooky.

But I thought you were supposed to report every roadside bomb you find! That's what the brochure said you'd get! And the training video.

When I was there they didn't work and nobody cared, just like if you shot an Iraqi, nobody cared. Now, you have to fill out a 5 page report justifying deadly force and have witnesses or you automatically go up for court martial.

Different ball game now, I'm happy I got out, 2 years in peace 2 year served in war.

Aexia
Fat chance of getting these things under Rumsfeld. He was too into his whole "smaller is better" thinking for the Armed Forces to ever put money towards "intermediate" vehicles like this. Gates is just a much better Secretary of Defense and his push for these shows it.

Fat chance of having enough people for the job since clinton gutted the military.
