Newsflash: Market records not breaking upwards is newsworthy. Normal market indices break upward records.

My mutual fund and 401k are happy.

It will be interesting to see how low it goes when it "corrects"...

2007-07-17 10:31:29 AM

2007-07-17 10:33:40 AM
So this is one of the weeks when Teh President directly affects the economy ?

Yayyyyyyy!!!1!!!!!

Now's the time to stick it to the fatcats, eh, comrades?

2007-07-17 10:55:42 AM
13,994. Not quite 14,000.

But let me get this straight:

The same Bushies who said he had nothing to do with the economy in 2003 are now saying "Wooo look what he's doing for the economy?"

AND

The only indicator of economic health you're using is the Dow average?

/creepy

OMG YOU'RE RIGHT

Unemployment Rate: 4.5% in Jun 2007

Payroll Employment:
+132,000(p) in Jun 2007

Average Hourly Earnings: +$0.06(p) in Jun 2007

Whoa, careful there, you'll set loose the "economic numbers never tell teh full story" crowd.

How does the Labor Dept. define "unemployment"?

NewportBarGuy: How does the Labor Dept. define "unemployment"?

With more credibility than a bunch of random people arguing on the internet.

DarthBrooks:

Exactly.

Unemployment Rate: 4.5% in Jun 2007
Is that overall unemployment or just new claims?

Payroll Employment: +132,000(p) in Jun 2007
Up from what and when? What's the long term net from 2000?

Average Hourly Earnings: +$0.06(p) in Jun 2007
Up from what and when? What's the long term net from 2000? What's the long term net versus 2000 with inflation adjustment?

This moment in time does not exist in a bubble. If you're saying "This is what Bush has done" then you have to compare it to the state that last murderous assclown left us in. Are we better off, now, than we were then?

On the surface, looking at your "in jun 2007" figures, it looks like yes, but I'll wait for the "versus 2000" figures before I accept any conclusions.

/off to look up the "versus 2000" figures...

2007-07-17 11:18:00 AM
Are McJobs still considered manufacturing jobs?

Are we still not counting the Iraq war in deficits?

Actually, those numbers are a pretty good indicator when taken together. With the caveats I asked about regarding perspective and relative levels.

I love threads about the Dow.

We always get:
1. People who think it's useless to post these stories because it doesn't affect them (non-investors)
2. People who like to whip out their annualized return numbers in a dick-measuring contest
3. People who (always) claim the market is due for a collapse
4. People who attempt to impose their investing style on to everyone else
5. People who politicize the topic (as with most news threads)

//6. People who put other people into generalized categories.

cubsfan07:

QFT

Basically, anyone who owns stocks or mutual funds just got richer.

Why is it that the people who are bitter about people making money off of the stock market are the last people who would invest themselves?

Is self-victimization THAT trendy?

dogdaze:

You know the dollar has been inflated so it looks like the economy is booming when, in reality, foreign currency has been steadily climbing against the dollar for 6 years, right?

dogdaze...your an ass...wanna check those stats... we owe trillions, all our jobs are outsourced, we are not calculating our war spending in our debt scewed rose color reports, we have lowered taxes and higher spending and unemployment is at a low...cause you don't count the people that have been out of a job past the 3 month time period alloted, spend 12 billion a week on a war to secure our safety there so we dont have to fight them here, then fight to pass bills and threaten to veto anyone that would stand in the way to question the sales of our security at ports and truck stops...thanks Bush and Bushiates, you make me PROUD to be Republican these past years. You might be too blind to see it now but this will catch up and HIT us soon enough...what was the Market prior to the crash of 87?

It is nice making $2000 in 3 months masturbating. If only I had put that $10,000 into rimm when it was $25 a share, i'd have made $300,000 masturbating over 5 years.

Market upswing does not equal booming economy. It just means that the richest 1% of American investors are doing well under BushCo. Not surprising.

Fewer people participate than during the 1990's. More of a robberbaron club these days.

/Now I'm off to pay $2.91/gallon for gas so that the energy companies can report more record gouging and an oil executive can buy that 4th house in Costa Rica.

* Arthur B. Laffer, "You don't need to read this Bush's lips," Wall Street Journal p. A18 (February 14, 2005).

"When 'W' ran for president in 2000, I voted for him but not enthusiastically. I had voted for Bill Clinton in the prior two presidential elections, but with Al Gore as the Democratic candidate in 2000 the choice was easy for me even if I wasn't all that excited about George Bush. I am now flabbergasted by the performance of Bush 43. [...] George W. Bush could well turn out to be the best president in recent history. [...] Because of President Clinton, President Bush's budget deficits can easily be absorbed by the U.S. economy. [...] Supply-side pro-growth economics couldn't ask for a better champion -- nor could any American."
