"We're #5! we're #5! Woop woop woop! USA!USA!USA!"

Wait a minute...

2002-09-06 08:03:21 AM
No wonder why they can't sell any tickets to the games, Conseco Field House is empty.

They should have just held the games at the court with the bent rims in park down the street.....

"The Yugoslavian players hugged, kissed and high-fived their supporters for almost an hour after the game; the Americans left the arena in shock."

I gues watching gay porn on a basketball court is common in Eastern Europe.

"GUESS"

2002-09-06 08:14:01 AM
So much for the 'dream team'. That's the only thing to do for them now. Dreaming.

2002-09-06 08:18:07 AM
D'oh!--Homer Simpson

BTW: Was anybody even aware we had a BB team in this tourney? It's news to me.

2002-09-06 08:23:57 AM
Way to go, US! Continue embarassing yourselves.

As for all the "We didn't care" and "We didn't send our best players" people: Whose f'ing fault is that? Maybe if you Bozos DID care, or if some of the upper echelon players were willing to play for their country, the whole world wouldn't be laughing at George Karl and his ragtag bunch right now.

The US will no longer win these things by default, no matter WHO they send. Other teams just aren't afraid anymore. Good luck getting 5th place.

2002-09-06 08:26:56 AM
Actually, they lost to Argentina.

2002-09-06 08:27:13 AM
We win the war, they win the hoops

Sounds like a fair deal to me......

2002-09-06 08:29:46 AM
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Losing ONE game I could understand.
But losing TWO in a row?

Bwahahahahahahahaahahahahahah
ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Man, are those players ever going to get
a heavy dose of trash talking for the rest
of their careers.

2002-09-06 08:30:28 AM
And in case someone wants to point it out,
the Canadian team DOES suck, and we don't care.

2002-09-06 08:32:26 AM
Looks good on them. That "We're American so we're the best" attitude was starting to wear thin. (in basketball and every other aspect of life)

2002-09-06 08:37:45 AM
TheOhGodOfHangovers, that was the last game. They lost to Agentina to break the streak of 58 straight wins, got kicked in the ass in fact. Supposedly that was going to teach them a lesson so they would take the other teams seriously, but then they lost again, hence the new article and new headline.

In fact, now they highest they can finish in the tournament is a disappointing fifth place.

2002-09-06 08:39:39 AM
They definitly not the dream team. But I wouldn't say they embarrased themselves. Last night was a good game. Yugoslav had alot of NBA players themselves. US's problem was
their rebounding. I wish the Shaq's, Kobe's, Iverson's, etc., would play for the USA. Their to worried about giving up their summers or getting injured or playing for no pay.

O well. 58 and 2 isn't a bad record. Nothing to be embarrased about huh.

2002-09-06 08:42:24 AM
And I care, why?

Bunch of overpaid cryasses thought they were going to breeze through the tourney and win without trying!

Good for them, I'm glad they lost.

"You're seeing the rest of the world playing better basketball, special basketball. I'm not sure it's the end of an era so much as it's a celebration of basketball," Karl said

I think this is a pretty good attitude. Basketball wasn't a big sport outside of the US afaik, this shows thats changing. Now its a real competition. Winning by default is boring, I guess thats why no-one pays attention to the tournament domestically. Whats the bet that changes next year ?

2002-09-06 08:47:28 AM
Or next .. whenever the competition is held.

2002-09-06 08:52:45 AM
Why do you hate America so much? :)

2002-09-06 08:57:03 AM
I love the comments from our biatch up north.....enjoy our losses. I hope it brightens your weekend.

2002-09-06 08:58:56 AM
All your basketball is ours!

2002-09-06 09:00:28 AM
It's so weak how you lose and then make excuses about how you didn't send your BEST players blah blah blah. You sent a team to represent you and they lost. Making excuses just makes you sound like a bunch of babies. You got beat by a better team. Accept it (ya bunch of whiney babies) or I'll come down there and beat you over the head with a hockey stick until you do accept it.

2002-09-06 09:00:28 AM
To my Canadian bretheren: Hurry up and legalize it already!

2002-09-06 09:00:34 AM
OH NO!!!! WE LOST WHAT TO GAMES IN THE PAST TEN YEARS!!!!

Fire em all and send their checks to my address....

2002-09-06 09:01:17 AM
SpaceCoyote - was that question for me or was the placement just random ?

2002-09-06 09:04:25 AM
Lets see them beat the LAKERS!

like we give 2 shiats about the anything but the NBA.

2002-09-06 09:08:45 AM
A great story I heard from a reporter who went abroad to watch them play basket ball over there.

"I noticed the difference in the rims over in Europe as opposed to the US. Ours are all bent, theirs are still perfectly straight...meaning our kids practice their dunks and showboating, their kids are perfecting their shooting from the perimeter."

Too many kids worried about getting on sportcenter or a nike commercial, and not winning games.

2002-09-06 09:09:12 AM
this will be the first time we don't medal since before i was born, i don't think USA basketball really has all that much to be ashamed of. We obviously didn't send the right players to represent us, me thinks we should just go ahead and send whomever is reighning champ to represent us, in this case, the Lakers. That way they know how to play as a team, most of the foreign teams play together regularly

2002-09-06 09:09:52 AM
Cool. At least these other teams aren't spoiled the way our loser sports teams are.

2002-09-06 09:10:58 AM
This was NOT a "dream team". There are better players in the NBA.

It is a shame that these millionaires have to tuck their tail between their legs and mope back to their Escalades. Losers.

2002-09-06 09:17:08 AM
Is there some point in this article (or any other professional sports article) that I or really anyone should give a rats ass about?

2002-09-06 09:17:59 AM
Who cares about basketball?!
I didn't even know there was a tournament...

Basketball wasn't a big sport outside of the US afaik, this shows thats changing. Now its a real competition. Winning by default is boring, I guess thats why no-one pays attention to the tournament domestically. Whats the bet that changes next year?

Thats a crock...no one is paying attention cause no one cares...

2002-09-06 09:19:03 AM
No-one in the US cares about basketball.

Errrrr

2002-09-06 09:28:15 AM
Well, if you think about it, what coach is going to be willing to let their star players go to some international competition where they may end up with a career-ending injury? The owners have too much money riding their players to risk them getting hurt.

I still think they're all a bunch of whiny assburgers, though.

2002-09-06 09:39:46 AM
For all those people putting us down because we say we didn't send our best players. STFU. It's true we didn't send our best players. Hell, I didn't even know half those players, with the exception of Miller and Pierce. Also, I watched both of these games and if you noticed at least 5 to 10 shots of ours were knocked out after hitting the rim and bouncing up above the rim. I know this is ok in international comp. but how many of those same kinds of shots did you see the US knock out? Maybe one or two for both games. Again, this is our fault but our guys were playing how they have been taught their entire lives, that's not something you can just start doing when your instinct tells you otherwise. I will however concede that the game with Argentina we just flat out lost, no bones about it. They kicked our ass. As for Yugoslovia we should have won but they out played us in the end. You just have to wonder though how things would have turned out if Shaq, Kobe, Webber, Iverson, Carter, McGrady, Duncan, Garnett, Kidd, etc. had been willing to go.

2002-09-06 09:40:30 AM
I say send in the college players again. They won't win all the time, but they'll be motivated to prove themselves and play their hearts out. And it's better to root for them than a buncha whiney-ass millionares who don't give a fvck about these tournaments.

2002-09-06 09:40:58 AM
Perhaps one of them had a bruised pinkie. That must be the reason. Honestly, do people outside the US care about this tournament? I know they don't care about it here. Of course, I can't stand watching any form of basketball. Give me hockey, football, and baseball. Heck, give me anything besides basketball.

2002-09-06 09:41:11 AM
You know why we lost? Foreign teams practice the fundamentals: passing, shooting, hustling defense, switching coverages. They steadily move up the ladder on the national teams and get used to playing with one another.

Our guys like to dunk and put up threes. They have little to no fundamental skills. Until these guys realize they have to work, it'll just get worse.

2002-09-06 09:42:46 AM
Wasn't it the last int'l tournament when the NBA players were striking and we had to send an all-college team? And didn't we finish (a respectable) third?

Although you can't blame the players entirely for this- drawing up plays where Ben Wallace gets the ball in the low post against a zone is BAD COACHING. Having Ben Wallace touch the ball at all on offense is BAD COACHING.

2002-09-06 09:46:25 AM
The main problem with NBA players is that they have to adapt to the REAL international rules of basketball. The NBA rules were tweaked in order to get a more spectacular and watchable game. The Americans are of course, by far, the best players in the world, I admit, but when they come to the competition, they have to deal with the fact that zone defense is allowed, that the referres are less lenient with the number of steps you can do before shooting, and other stuffs that are different. Also, most of the NBA players wanabees first learned to dunk and act cool, without learning the fundamentals first. And as one of my basketball playing friend said: "the most spectacular dunk is still worth only two points".

2002-09-06 09:49:11 AM
It wasn't an all-college team in the last int'l tournament. It was a bunch pro-ball on European teams. They finished third, but didn't get to the finals because of a blatantly wrong ref call. It helped to have Rudy T. coaching the team. He knows his sh!t, unlike Karl.

2002-09-06 09:50:32 AM
Frogbrother,
"This was NOT a "dream team". There are better players in the NBA."

Where are they from your better players in NBA ? Yougoslavia, Germany,Argentina... ?

2002-09-06 09:50:40 AM
"bunch that played pro-ball" is what I meant

2002-09-06 09:53:58 AM
I love how, when the US wins something, it's so important, it's the most monumental thing to ever happen to anyone in the entire world.. and when they lose it's "nobody cares about that sport anyway"...

2002-09-06 10:03:57 AM
KevinOfOz: Baseball over Basketball? What brand of crack are you smoking?

Yugoslavia advanced to a semifinal matchup with New Zealand

That's funny in itself. In NZ (with around 1/100th the population of the US), they don't give a fark about basketball, but they're still in the semis. I'm a New Zealander (although I haven't been there for a few years) and I didn't even know we HAD a national team. It is pretty damn hilarious that the US lose at a game the rest of the world doesn't care about.

2002-09-06 10:10:11 AM
Its the World Farkin Championship.

You can piss on about "Not the dream team" all you like, and say there are better players in the NBA.
Blah Blah....predictable American response.

America population ??? 380 million odd......
New Zealand 3.8 Million odd......

Hahahahahahahhahahahahaha

I just have to rub it in........We are in the Semi's...na na na na na :)

We must of had a bad game against the US when we lost......

Still in the semi's now though.

Ok sorry...thats enough, besides september 11 is fast approaching and that should take your mind off coming probably 5th in the world championship of a sport played on your home soil that you are supposed to be the supreme master of.

2002-09-06 11:03:37 AM
There are 2 reasons the US team sucked:

1) George Karl.

2) George Karl's decision not to play his "secret weapon", the big man he drafted himself out of UCLA, "5 1/2 tons 'o fun", Dan "Gadzurra" Gadzuric. You just can't win without a big man. "Gadzurra" is as big as they get.

"Gadzurra" would have eaten the Argentinians for breakfast, the Yugoslavs for lunch, the Kiwis as a between-meal snack, and still had room for an after dinner mint.

To summarize: George Karl sucks. "Gadzurra" rules!! The US deserves to be the basketball biatch for a change.

2002-09-06 11:04:01 AM
American population is closer to 280 million than 380 million.

2002-09-06 11:10:18 AM
Whenever I have a hard time falling asleep I put a basket ball game on and in no time - Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Basketball sucks since Larry and Magic retired.

2002-09-06 11:17:40 AM
Louis44: Well, we can all say with certainty that the better players aren't from France.
