I was reading this line and the thought came to mind of all the stories we hear in the US about the "White Trash"/Ghetto-Welfare family with 8 kids and another on the way, with none of the 3 fathers of the children to be found anywhere. Now here is the thing, we hear about and see these gleaming examples of humanity all over the world, in almost any country you can think of....except Japan.
So why is that?

~Does anyone know, is this true, or just a misconception....Is Japan one of the only countries in the world without these greatly multiplying bovine-like wastes of human flesh, or are they just hidden?
~If this is true does anyone have a clue why? Is it due to the family unit, the Bushido/Japanese idea of honor, or is there some other sociological reason behind this?

To continue the partial threadjack-- It is indeed true, the birthrate in Japan is low. Low enough that the government is scared. (Old people burn up a lot of tax dollars that aren't being replaced by young workers). In fact, if you have a baby here, the government will give you about $3000.

I'm no sociologist, but from what I've seen there are a few factors to the low birthrate:
- Japanese people don't have a "holla back" culture. Generally, you can't talk to strangers in Japan and expect to get a response (unless you're foreign). So... no hitting on random chicks, and therefore less random sex and baby's mommas. Almost every couple I know here met at work or school- the only real social networks in Japan. Any guy who approaches a girl outside of work or school is considered a "playboy" and not likely to be very popular with the ladies (paradoxically).
- Japanese marriages are often semi-sexless. Many salarymen work long hours and party late. They are likely to go to "massage parlors" or "hostess bars" (like this dude) for their needs, rather than get some at home. This is not always true, but I'd imagine it contributes.
- Interestingly, I don't know ANY single mothers in Japan. Perhaps Japanese girls know that motherhood is expensive, difficult and time consuming and are smart enough to wait until they get married (which may take time).

There are probably many more factors, and these are all purely speculative on my part, but I've gone on long enough.

That's a good point. I hadn't considered it before, but there is definitely no "religious" stigma to abortion and/or morning after pills.

I'm a typical FARKer, not a catch by any stretch of the imagination. I seriously was making no effort whatsoever to meet women during my 16 days in Japan, and ended up dating two different women from two different districts of Tokyo while there. They approached me. One of them spoke English well (she had spent two years in California at one point in her career), the other spoke less English than I spoke Japanese (which is not much... I had just finished my first year of study).

I stayed in touch, a little bit, with the one that spoke English well. She works as an mid-level executive for Honda. Nice gal.

Anyway, don't ask me why, but some of the ladies there have... I don't know what you would call it... "vanilla fever"? Hooking up in Japan is not at all difficult if you are a Westerner.
