Two years of research go in to decide that the last two years of research were crap? Hmm...

Packaging graphics are getting way too cluttered and over-complicated. Bravo to Coke!

The 1980's, they are back, no? Yes, now be handing me my black rubber gasket bracelets! You find them now!

Their Coke Zero and Cherry Coke Zero packaging is too similar...but both are tasty. I think their golden Caffeine-Free Diet Coke can is one of the ugliest ever.

very true; as a side note, it kills me that it's harder to find cherry coke than cherry coke zero.

I'll bet $10 that some product manager somewhere is trying to eke out fractions of a cent in production costs related to the amount of ink used per can and spinning it as a "return to the visual strength of the branding".

.002 * 10billion = 20million

I want that persons job!

F*ck, I know I live in a shallow materialistic society that really only values me as a consumer, but I refuse to give a shiat what a can of coke looks like.

With every redesign since 1985, the word "classic" keeps getting smaller. This time around, they changed it from all caps to lower-case.

i agree completely. this from the article just made me uneasy: Coke already has gotten calls from folks wondering if it is a limited edition.

get a life, people. it's a farking coke can, not a picasso

Bring back New Coke!

2007-07-10 10:18:55 PM
now if they would go back to sugar instead of friggin high fructose corn syrup, it would once again be REAL Coke.

All you kids who never tasted what real Coke was, get off my lawn.

That reminds me, I need to make a trip down to Buford Hwy to get some Mexican Coke.

now, now...if you want to get that picky about it - 'real' coke had cocaine in it. or have you tried pre-1900ish coke?

Unless the can is able to pleasure me orally while I drink it, I fail to understand why I should give a fat flying mother-fark.

I've known about this for months. I don't see why it is a big deal, but I do like the new cans. They forgot to mention that Coke Zero (which they are starting to promote the hell out of) had a similar redesign. There's a new Cherry Coke can too.

it seems to me that if the can is providing you a drink of a beverage you enjoy, it is in fact pleasuring you orally

Amen to that! I visited Australia in 1994 and they were still using sugar instead of the hfcs and my lord, it was wonderful. My friends were drinking mixed drinks and beer and I stuck with cokes and shots.

2007-07-10 11:58:05 PM
I can't wait for Coca-Cola to make a big deal out of the new can, have it flop after everyone says they hate it, and bring back the "old" can with much fanfare.

2007-07-10 11:58:29 PM
This is great! No longer will I be confused by all those stripes and end up buying Mr. Pibb by mistake!

2007-07-11 12:00:41 AM
I'd be happier if they switched back to using sugar instead of HFC as they did in the pre-Classic Coke days. The only way I can get Coca Cola with sugar instead of HFC is if I'm lucky enough to find some bottled in Mexico & that's not easy to do around here.

Are they going relaunch Coke 45?

Way to go AJC, press release for a can that has been out for a month. In the AJC news tomorrow, ATF are searching a security guard's house for information related to the Olympic park bombing.

ManRay:

They carry it at the Sweetwater Corners Chevron on Highway 20 west of Canton too.

=)

Corn isn't a major subsidized crop in Australia like it is here. You'd be hard pressed to find HFCS in anything manufactured there.

/gimme that sweet sweet sugar

It is a testament to my skills as being the least observational person ever, that it took reading this article for me to even realize the coke can has changed in the last 20 years at all. And I drink coke all the time.

Dumb newspaper. What do they show? The obsolete can.

It wont flop.

Its better looking than the old can. Even if it were a little uglier Coke drinkers would buy Coke. Youd have to make it look like London's Olympic logo before it'd scare off a caffeine junkie.

Damn straight. Every so often, I find Coke from Mexico, made with real sugar, packaged in glass bottles, and I have to buy 10-12 of them. When I get home, my wife just looks at me and shakes her head while I rearrange the fridge in order pack them all into the back so I can get them as cold as possible and still be liquid. Crack one of those open after mowing the lawn and it's just perfect.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd willingly pay more for Coke made from real sugar and I'd probably drink less of it. For some reason, the sugar version is more satisfying to me.

Worked at a can manufacturing plant in the past. Definitely agree. Pepsi needs to die in a fire.

Its too much trouble to use cane sugar , but that was what made old Coke great.High Fructose corn sugar screwed it up.When I made beer years ago, the books on brewing said to use corn sugar instead of cane sugar because cane sugar imparts a flavor unsuitable for beer. But it was perfect for an Ice cold bottle of Coke. Why is it always too much trouble to do it right?

Forgot to add a "to" in there, sorry about the forced grammatical leap.

Dumb poster doesn't scroll down the article and see the picture of the new can.

Personally, I was confused by the voting question. Do I prefer the old can or the new can? Do they mean the new (but old)design or the old (but newer) design.

I must be too tired for all this.

2007-07-11 12:18:51 AM
This is only partially related, but recently (the last few months) coke bottles in the grocery store I work at it appears Coke has dropped the "classic" part. This goes for cans, bottles, 1L, 2L and 591 ml bottles. I haven't looked at other grocery chains, but I assume it's the same deal with them, since we all use the same distributor.

they also have this 'new' old design for the cans.

The local costco sells Coke made in Mexico (ie: real sugar) and its only $17 for a case of 24 16oz bottles.

2007-07-11 12:23:42 AM
The "Classic" on the Coke can has annoyed me for a long time. I always thought eventually they would drop it off the logo, but it's been over twenty freakin' years. New Coke was out by itself for what, four, five months tops? There's a whole generation out there that probably doesn't know what non-classic coke tastes like.

I don't notice a difference.. is it me or have the coke cans in Canada looked like this forever?

Only the US uses HFCS instead of sugar in Coke I think. Canada uses real sugar in everything.

this new coke can is a rip-off of the Cocaine can.

Coke is introducing this "new can" right after the Cocaine energy drink has been banned.

coincidence?

Coke may have forgotten how to make it real.

But Dr. Pepper can still be had in 8oz bottles made from Pure Cane Sugar,,,
