krazydiamond:

But that's not the case here. This concert isn't going to make people care about the earth any more. It's going to make people think, "I can continue living an extravagant lifestyle just like all the celebrities, as long as I talk about environmental protection a lot."

Well, obviously, that's what it makes you think. And, of course, everyone thinks like you do.

If that's all you've got and that's the best you can do, Dubya Saved My Life, you're really pitiful.

And note that "pity" is different than "hate."

None of this will do a bit of good. It's the Sun that causes climate change. Hotter Sun = Hotter Earth.

Now go pick up some garbage if you want to clean up the Earth. I do.

/Global warming alarmists may now make fun of me and call me names

When said with such certitude, it must be "right", right?

Seriously, How did you come to this view again?

I personally think celebrities and social awareness shouldn't mix, but unfortunately, the majority of people in the world, need celebrities to tell them what to do because they can't think for themselves. Yes, the concert is counterproductive, but the effort and the intent to educate and spread awareness is there. Why knock someone for trying to help eradicate a problem? What's the alternative, to be completely inactive. Sounds like another excuse to be lazy to me. If we are to condemn anything, it should be the corporate interests and government ignorance that has propelled global warming to become such a problematic issue.

Hey, one good condescension deserves another, I always say.

Anyway, I sense that you're referring to your internet, the little one that supports your point of view, such as it is. Rather than the big one where your position is blown to pieces more often than not, and by a considerable margin.

R5D4: glassa: Follow the money.

Always good advice.

You keep telling yourself that. Al Gore is a very rich man because of all this.

DrBenway, my position has not only NOT been blown to bits, but is acually quite solid, unlike the gore followers (like you) who suck it up like half-priced scotch, and continue to drink the koolaid. Get an education or GTFO, what you have so far isn't working.

I also love how some people say those that are environmentally conscious are supposed to take some kind of vow of poverty.

You only say this because of the record military enlistment numbers you Bush voters provided when you all enlisted to fight in Bush's jackass war for profit. Eh?

glassa,

Do yourself a favor, I mean, before you make yourself look like a total and complete ass. Do a modicum of reading and find out where Al Gore's money came from.

Or is this just a troll I fell for?
That's it, you're kidding all of us.
Nobody could be that stupid.
And I completely fell for it.
Good one! Had me going there.

Not much of a "big picture" guy are you, glassa. How, exactly, does whether or not Gore is making money off this refute R5D4's point?

And, Pumpsnatch, if you've even followed this thread just a little bit (which might be construed as something of a microcosm of the greater internet), you would see that your position is something quite less than rock solid. Repeatedly there is supported and peer-reviewed scientific evidence posted versus opinion pieces and industry-supported misinformation. But hey, you pick whichever one makes you happy. Your veiled hints at some sort of "global warming is real" secret agenda advanced purely for the benefit of Al Gore reeks of a paranoia more sickening than that cheap Scotch you suggest I'd ever dare even a sip of.

You missed my point. Gore is playing all this up for his own purposes. He's pulling a Michael Moore & making things look worse than they are in order to make more money. So Gore goes off going "OMG we're all gonna die" and some people buy it hook, line & sinker purchasing low carbon lightbulbs that, if they break it causes a HUGE headache due to the mercury.

Oh, and then there's the little fact that the people buying those silly carbon offsets are investing in Gore's company.

But, no, he's not doing all this for money! Pffft!

Let me make this simple for you...

Understand?

2007-07-07 09:20:53 PM
So your point then, glassa, is that because Al Gore is making money off this (allegedly), it's unnecessary for you to address what R5D4 said? You're still, of course, avoiding that one. A little too inconvenient for you?

2007-07-07 09:27:37 PM
I might be wrong, but I'm guessing this "carbon-neutral" fad among celebrities will pass by pretty quickly, and in another few months they'll be planning the next big Live ______ concert to rake in billions of dollars/pounds/euros/etc.

100 Watt Walrus: Norad Yep, cause all these worthless high-profile expenditure concerts will eliminate global warming.

Nobody thinks they will, asshat. It's about raising awareness. The concerts don't make a difference, but if more people learn about reducing their carbon footprints as a result of the PR, that can make a difference. If you can't figure that out, it's you who belongs on the edge of the very tall building.

What is it with all these idiots who are anti-climate awareness? I mean, there are only 3 scenarios here:

1) Global warming isn't happening. People organize to help make the environment cleaner. Nothing bad happens.

2) Global warming is happening. People organize to help make the environment cleaner. We possibly save future generations from a very ugly world.

3) Global warming is happening. People do nothing. Result: Some degree of ugly world - described often enough elsewhere that I won't bother here.

So please tell me, what's so terrible about #1? Why NOT try to make the planet cleaner and greener?

No one on the planet had heard of global warming until this concert. Now I feel better.

2007-07-07 10:35:05 PM
In a nutshell, oil and coal came from the dinosaurs and plant life decaying and being compressed in cavities in the Earth over hundreds of millions of years. All of that carbon is being burned now, and since the start of the industrial revolution. Millions of years of stored carbon are being released over a short period of time resulting in changes to the atmosphere which causes more heat to be retained. Now if you believe the earth was created 6000 years ago and God puts the oil in the Earth for human consumption, you are all set. The scientific community overwhelmingly believes that Climate Change is occurring and it is being accelerated or altered by human activity. Wind, Solar, Tidal, Geothermal, along with Nuclear Power are the answers along with conservation.

Could Melissa have been any deeper up Al's butt. Then she makes a comment how she has switch to a bio-diesel fuel vehicle. Well gee maybe if all of us were millionaires we could just ditch our current vehicles and buy a new "green" car.

what a waste of resources this show has turned out to be, well except for the huge plug Al Gore's run for the presidency got when it all said and down.

Al Gore=Anti-Christ, sure thought it would have been someone more charismatic lol

I love the fact that we are having meetings among the biggest global players about capping emissions (because these countries have all accepted that CO2 is virtually certainly driving warming), including the United States, and there are people in this thread who feel perfectly confident that it isn't happening. Even the Bush administration has accepted that we need to cut emissions. Who are you skeptics listening to?

Just kidding, Farkers, it is nothing more than a conspiracy to enable a liberal power grab, that the world's leading climatologists, atmospherical physicists, NASA, the IPCC, the G8, Nature, Science, etc. are all part of.

Geez, why is everyone hating on Subby and everyone who supports the point of the article?

It's great that all these artists are putting their time and effort into this concert for awareness of the planet. But the fact remains that outside of being on a more eco-friendly stage, they're still polluting the planet more than the average person when they fly in private jets. It doesn't matter if they can afford it; it's still hypocritical. Instead of doing the damage to the planet beforehand and try to make up for it, why not do less damage by flying commercial. I mean, how many people are actually important enough to need a private jet (outside of world leaders, probably very few).

It's like the Catholic Church's indulgences of yore. It doesn't matter how much these artists "pay," they're still "sinning" by damaging the planet through using private jets and other actions.
