67 Beetle: I looked at edmunds and it looks like the Astra is only coming here in 140 hp 1-4 form. No low emissions diesel and no hybrid. Boo.

A hatchback/wagon is the best alternative to an suv for me. I drive a Ford Expedition now but that's the equivalent of driving an oldsmobile 442 right before they switched to unleaded. Fun as all hell but not exactly practical. (MMM...muddin). Luckily I drive maybe a 100 miles a week.

Friar Tuck - I don't believe they are planning the Saturn Astras to be hybrid or diesel (at least, I haven't heard about any, unfortunately). I believe they have the hybrid SUV and hybrid sedan (VUE and Aura), but I'm still waiting on them to come out with something that gets a good 50-60 mpg. Whether that will be a 2009 Astra?...

It's a great relief to find that I've been had by a clever troll. I'd hate to think that stupidity that dense existed in the wild.

One aspect of this whole debate is the willfull refusal to understand the science behind climate change and energy sources on both sides. I have grown very tired of the Luddite segment of the left that refuses to examine the benefits of nuclear power. If we're going to tackle anthropogenic climate change, then we have to look at all the alternatives. Nuclear power is clean and safe, and we have enough material to fuel reactors.

Hehe, sorry to be sarky at you, I just loathe SUVs, had too many asses damn near run me off the road in the US in those things, they seem to have a "small cars don't exist" attitude. FWIW, I would never have an SUV in europe. I've lived there. The roads are just too narrow. If I bought a big car I'd be a touring wagon or something similar. I drove an opel astra wagon for a few weeks one time and liked it. I was hoping GM would bring the opel here but it never happened.

Nooo, and too many twats have them over here and it creates chaos. Several of them trying to manouver in a city street, ugh. Simple answer, don't treat the wife's vagina as a clown-car and one won't need an SUV. Sorted. People over here, (and mostly in the States) only do it to show off anyway. My dad in law had a massive truck a few years back, but only 'cos he needed it to haul shiate about a lot. Soon as he didn't he got a tiny wee thing (LOL), a Ford I think but I have no idea what, and now he's chuffed as fark because the thing has actual steering! Manouverability FTW...

The people on my side of the aisle, very generally speaking. I don't expect much from the Bushies because they are dimwitted twerps, to a man. However, the people who support the issues I do (equal rights for gay people, environmental responsiblity, ending the war in Iraq) ought to know better, yet, in their own way, they often spout some truly uninformed tripe. The progressive movement incorporates idiots who are anti-vaccination because they think an ingredient causes autism, who oppose nuclear power plants, who think that the Earth is a living being, who think that SUVs are causing global warming, and other assorted nonsense.

I would like to see more science literacy and more rational thought injected into the issues by both sides, so that we can fix the problem before it's too late.

Maybe subbie has a point, but I still admire people who do stuff like this. As an environmental I knew used to say, "If you love the wild places so much, live in the city and visit once in a while. Don't build your house there!"

Maybe we should just stay home and write letters to Congresspeople to show our concern, (not that I really think it would do any good, anyway) but hell, who wouldn't rather go to a concert?

Interesting fact, they just announced that the stages and decorations are made of recycled items, now that I look at them, the decorations behind the actors are the tops of oil cans, they are using low energy flourescent bulbs, recycled tires for something, and the plates and cups are bio degradable corn based plastics.

I haven't read the entire thread since I don't have the time, but after reading the first half I had to post. Everyone insulting conservatives for no reason and claiming they are all religious nut jobs who are trying to hurt the country, just think how that makes you look. Do you think half of this country is really a bunch of sheep following what Bush and Cheney and Limbaugh tell them to?

Taking that tone really discredits your argument and makes you look stupid. Plus how many people do you think you will win over by insulting your opponent?

And there are many conservatives who are not in these demographics that you place them all in. I consider myself a conservative, though a modern one and not a republican(I vote for the candidate I feel agrees with more of my philosophies whichever party he is in). Personally I don't believe that Global warming is entirely mans fault. If you look back in time, you would realize that the earth itself goes through periods of warming and cooling. During the middle ages they actually grew grapes in England for wine which would have required a warmer climate. And the last ice age, which was caused by an average temperature drop of only a few degrees, ended about 10,000 years ago.

However I do support decreasing our use of gasoline. Not for environmental reasons but because I don't want us to base our middle eastern diplomacy on our gasoline consumption. Because I want our gas consumption to go down, I actually welcome the increase in gas prices, though even with the increase gas consumption hasn't changed much. People always complain about the cost of filling up the tank, but if you look at sales, no one is really cutting down, and hybrid sales are a lot lower than you would expect them to be from all you hear about them.

I have actually thought that a $2.00 a gallon additional tax on gas would help reduce usage. However a tax like that would hurt the lower and middle classes a lot more than the upper class. So, instead of just having a tax increase, why not deduct the amount we would earn from such a tax from the amount we earn from the lowest income tax bracket. This change would give people an incentive to drive less so that they could spend their money on other purchases.

There is also one problem with all these environmentalists who want us to change over to non CO2 emitting power. They are afraid of nuclear power. It would provide an enormous amount of cheap, clean power for this country however it is never brought up.

The concerts don't make a difference, but if more people learn about reducing their carbon footprints as a result of the PR, that can make a difference. What is it with all these idiots who are anti-climate awareness? I mean, there are only 3 scenarios here:

1) Global warming isn't happening. People organize to help make the environment cleaner. Nothing bad happens.

2) Global warming is happening. People organize to help make the environment cleaner. We possibly save future generations from a very ugly world.

3) Global warming is happening. People do nothing. Result: Some degree of ugly world - described often enough elsewhere that I won't bother here.

Good to know that amongst the diatribe spouting polar-tards here there are still some sane people left in America. I hope that attitude grows; my kids have the right to leave here and live in the US when they're old enough if they choose to, they're half-Yanks, and by that time, with any luck, the US will have got over the severe mental-breakdown it seems to be suffering at the moment.

I suffer from (mild) bipolar disorder, and sometimes what goes on in these threads is very much like what happens inside my head on a bad day. Luckily I have good medication these days. That's the one thing everyone should agree on though. I don't think there is anyone who is involved in the global warming debate who thinks that global climate change isn't happening. The point of contention is what the cause is.
