Oh, this will go over well. Why do I get the vibe that the administration here is looking for early fireworks?

2007-07-04 08:54:21 AM
Could I at least get the keg set up before the fireworks go off? Please?

Gotta nuke something.

It seems to me that reading up on these people, they don't overfish, they use the whole whale and it's a vital part of their way of life.

I'd prefer that the whaling industry as a whole use this spear method method instead of mass-hunting techniques. Those pics are kickass too..very cool

Kiribub: early fireworks

Mr_Juche: before the fireworks

What's the problem? Yeah, save the whales and all that, but if some primitives can take out a whale with a couple of point-ed sticks and feed their village, what's the harm?

We're whalers on the moon,
We carry a harpoon,
For they ain't no whales
So we tell tall tales
And sing our whaling tune.

fark indigenous peoples. Their lifestyles are wasteful. If the world can't afford to live like you do, then you don't get to.

2007-07-04 09:31:19 AM
People would be upset at traditional hunting methods used for hundreds thousands of years with the entire whale used for food and not wasted?

Not like this is big commercial fishing dragging nets that catch anything and everything in their path - this is how they eat

/these guys also have balls the size of small cars - yikes
//likes his tuna with a touch of dolphin meat

they're not KILLING it, they're catapulting Over it, right?

at least it's an ugly-assed whale and not a baby seal, right?

Damn hippie whales, drink all the water! We must slaughter all the whales before they drink up all the oceans! Then how will Japanese men get erections?

somebody put a Walmart on that island so the whales can be saved.

Seriously though. Those folks there know how to live.

For all of in awe of the courage and strength of these "traditional hunters"...One thing to take in mind is that they are towed out the hunting grounds by motorized launches.

I cannot be 100% sure, but I dont think that "Yamaha" is ancient Inuit, or modern Japanese.

They often go as far as being towed right next to their vicious prey before their ancient and noble attack.

whale... what have they ever done for us?

While many whale populations are in trouble, there are plenty of sperm whales. According to recent estimates there are between 1.5 and 2 million sperm whales . I don't think a handful of subsistence whalers are going to put much of a dent in their population.

Somebody oughta text message the whales to stay away from boats with people in them.

Even if it is true that they get towed to the hunting grounds that doesn't negate the fact that they kill a 55 TON whale by making flying leaps off tiny wooden boats to stab it with a bamboo spear. I'm pretty sure that makes up for that tiny 'flaw' in the methods they use and the risk they take.

2007-07-04 09:50:33 AM
hmmm... i would think whales could dive deep and hold there breath for a long time.
i guess those barbed harpoons work pretty well.
well, aside from the six hours it takes them to kill it.

Cue the "PETA stands for People Eating Tasty Animals" retards.

Not that I'm a big PETA fan or anything, it's just not even slightly clever or amusing. Especially after hearing it a brazillion times.

Lord_Baul:"Great pics! Do you have any of Bambi getting shot in the head, submitter?"

I HATE that movie. Think about the opening scene, hunters riding crazily and recklessly shooting at everything that moves. I've been hunting for over 25 years at this point and I've never once seen hunters act like that. Every hunter I know is responsible, never over hunts, obeys the laws(of hunting) and have better gun safety training than any "big city" police department.

FARK DISNEY.

/really loves Walt
//just can't stand the bad information they present in the movie

So maybe I missed it in the article but how do they get it back to shore? An escort of lots of smaller boats? It doesn't look like they can fit the whale on board even if all of the men jumped off.

I think that TheBlackFlag covered that:

TurdBurglar, since PETA isn't simply about the "ethical treatment of animals" but rather all the ways some asshat hippie wannabes can interfere with our rights to eat meat, our rights to have and care for pets, our rights to advance medicine and soo much more, one might say the parody acronym is well deserved. Same people make death threats against humans. Are humans not animals? Then there's when they released all those endangered birds in England and the birds died. That's responsible thinking and "ethical".

I got no beef with these guys for killing whales. By the look of it, it's a pretty fair fight.
Same with the Inuits and other North-Western tribes that still take whales in the traditional manner.

I do have a beef with Iclanders and Japanese who practically nuke the whales from orbit (it's the only way to be sure).

Kinda like I have more respect for bow hunters than dudes that use rifles.

You mean something like the most dangerous game ever?
That sounds cool. Maybe we should only raise fighting cocks and hippos instead of regular chickens and cows. Make the farmer work for it. Heck, maybe even hide poisonous barbs in meat so even the stockboys at Kroger have to sweat a little.

Very cool pictures.

There's some native groups here in the Pacific Northwest (of North America) and in Arctic waters that still hunt (semi) traditionally as well. I think they're the ones that used motorized launches to tow them out to the hunting grounds.

Either way, that whale could mess those hunters up if it did. They must catch them in shallow water where they can't dive away.
