Too bad it wasn't TomKat.. Now that would have been cool.

Is it about my cube?

/awesome headline, submitter.

DaCricket: Too bad they have to do this.

It's either that or have the spare parts fall into Iranian hands.

/Yes, they are the only other nation to fly the F-14.

I came here for the pics of Tom Katt, and I was...surprisingly dissapointed

"Is it about my cube?"

Ugh, what a waste... $38 million each to build the things and now an extra $4 million to crush 'em up.

Military spending is insane. Maybe if the US cut down on how much it spent on killing people and put the money into schools instead then the country wouldn't be in the mess it is now.

subby that was absolutely MARVELOUS!

+10!

I was confused thinking Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got smashed.

Now I'm just sad that it didn't happen.

/didn't really get confused

Nice headline subby.

Awesome picture with that article.

Can't they just take one apart and reverse-engineer it?

2007-07-02 04:35:12 PM
It's a damn shame really. Oh well, it could be a fun job.

as much as people rag on the show now, nary a day goes by when someone doesn't make a reference to the simpsons in a headline or comment thread

2007-07-02 04:36:14 PM
I guess they never heard about melting down and reusing parts.

2007-07-02 04:36:44 PM
They could have just given it to me. I would have wanted a free tomcat. Hmmph.

2007-07-02 04:37:34 PM
Should have gave it to my wife. She would have wrapped it around a pole for free.

Yea, lets spend more on our failing educational system and not defend our nation. Hey, lets just divert the money to welfare for Mexicans. Yea, Illegal aliens getting welfare, that would be so much better than taking some of these people that join the Military and teaching them a skill and giving them a job.

Or are you just a troll that snuck a snuke in Hillary's snizz?

v0rtex, please refrain from making any common-sensical remarks. This is FARK.

Iran doesn't have the know-how to take apart the birds and figure out how they work. Even if they could, it wouldn't matter. Last I heard, they were not flyable aircraft. Without the Grumman techs, they fell into disrepair. When the Shah was forced from power, the techs disabled the aircraft by destroying certain components that the Iranians couldn't replace.

They'd just be better served buying whatever version of the MiG they can get their hands on. Getting the F-14s to work would be much harder and much more expensive.

2007-07-02 04:39:20 PM
MasterThief: Yes, they are the only other nation to fly the F-14

Well, were. They haven't flown in years. Course if they get their hands on these spare parts, they would be flying pretty fast.

To fly: the dream of man and flightless bird alike.

Perhaps v0rtex was referring to the military industrial complex welfare that takes up a huge portion of the US budget?

Interestingly enough, the AMARC facility that is crunching those planes to bits is the only 'department' in the armed forces that turns a profit.

I've toured the boneyard several times. At night too. Creepiest place on earth!

Are there enough spare parts where I could build my own F14 out of them? I want to be able to defend my home from foreign invaders/FBI.

2007-07-02 04:43:01 PM
(Removes hat) I know and understand why they are doing it, but it is still hard to see a beautiful warbird go down like that.

2007-07-02 04:43:32 PM
Bresin: I guess they never heard about melting down and reusing parts.

You should tell them, I'm sure they never thought of that.

2007-07-02 04:43:46 PM
Yeah, v0rtex, 'cause that's all our military does is kill people. It's not like they deter anyone from attacking us. It's not like we've ever needed them for anything. All they do is go out to different countries and kill everything in site.

Oh, and one more thing; you're a farking tool. Me, and everyone else who's ever worn a uniform would like for you to suck it. Suck it long and hard, asshat.

That makes sense. I still think we shouldn't sell anyone that kind of equipment.

you know what's easier than dismantling it?

giving it to me.

What a racket! Getting PAID to scrap airplanes!

With all the high grade salvageable metals they're made of, and the high price of scrap these days, you could easily dismantle them for free and still make a lot of profit on the transaction.

Submitter here. I got to see one of the first Tomcats delivered to the fleet when my dad, who did his time in Phantoms, was stationed at Miramar. It was pretty thrilling for a ten-year-old.

baby_hewey: Yea, lets spend more on our failing educational system and not defend our nation.

Hezbollah demonstrated that all you need to defend your nation is a cache of RPG-29s in every neighborhood and a population actually willing to defend its home. They kicked Israel's ass without a single overpriced jet.

My company grinds F-14s into a fine powder that is useless to Iranians, so I'm really getting a kick out of some of these replies.
