(New Scientist)   There is nothing new under the sun. The moon, however, seems to be doing something that no one can explain   (newscientist.com) divider line 119

It just sounds like someone up there is doing some remodeling. Maybe they're installing a zero-g pool.

Often these consist of a brightening of a small patch of the Moon's surface. Astronauts on Apollo 11 reported an apparent brightening of part of the Aristarchus crater

It's just early grading before they start constructing the condominiums.

Like most people, I normally think of the Moon as a dead, unchanging place, but if it's outgassing from time to time, that view may not be so accurate.

Yeah, I outgas from time to time just to let people know I'm not dead, too.

He points out that rocket launches as part of NASA's return to the Moon will introduce a lot of new gas into the lunar environment, which could mask any signal from outgassing events. For that reason, gas experiments should be done as soon as possible, he says.

My wife has been suggesting gas-detecting experiments in our house for some time. She often bandies about the idea that gas is seeping out from somewhere.

It's just swamp gas from a weather balloon that was trapped in a thermal pocket and then reflected the light from Venus, duh.

A: How long until President Bush decides to drill there?

or

B: How long until enviromentalist dolts start protesting against drilling on the moon?

or

C: A Mr. Show reference about blowing up the moon

You may only choose one.

So, if I read TFA correctly (and the white papers tfa references), basically what we're talking about here is that the moon, for lack of a better word, broke wind?

That's some funny stuff right there. Expect Peter making a "Hey Lois! This reminds me of that time that the moon faahted!" joke on an upcoming episode of "Family Guy".

just sayin...

I learned recently that there is actually a "wind" on the moon caused by static electricity created by the imbalance of charged particles on the light and dark sides of the moon. Perhaps that explains the observations. Then again, perhaps not

What increasingly drives me nuts about the "scientific community" is a tendency to dismiss as non-existant anything they can't readily explain. For how man years were pilot's reports of "sprites" and "fountains" dismissed as hallucinations before some high-altittude research craft brought back pictures and they had to conceed, that gee, consistent reports from decades of trained observers COULDN'T all be chalked up to mental/perceptual problems...

I'd just like to add, for the record, that if someone (not me, of course) doesn't post a photoshop of the moon as a giant butt in the next, oh, ten minutes, then the terrorists have already won.

If ever there was an excuse to do a 'shop of the moon as a giant butt, then this is it, my friends.
