I still squash today. Of all the native plants that could have agriculturally domesticated, WHY did they have to start with squash?

2007-06-29 10:28:03 AM
We had this vegetable for dinner every Sunday when I was a kid. I hated it! I finally got so tired of it that I suffocated him with a pillow and threw the tubroom sink through the window and ran off.

Man On A Mission: I still squash today.

I haven't squashed since I was a kid.

On an unrelated note, I like baked squash, like butternut or banana squash. Don't care as much for zucchini or summer squash, though.

I love squash. Your mother probably just didn't put enough butter and maple syrup on it, subby!

I guess I should've tried to give her a cooking lesson the last time I was over at her house getting serviced.

I love squash, what's wrong with you people?

Butternut squash. Cut in half, salt, pepper, splash of olive oil, hot over for a bout an hour. Divine. Works even better with acorn squash.

But then my mother never served it when I was a kid, I don't think we got them in the UK, and I discovered it for myself.

FTFA: Evidence that squash was being grown nearly 10,000 years ago, in what is now Peru, is reported in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

All kidding aside, what's important about findings like these is that they indicate that the agricultural revolution in the Americas is as old as the ones in the "Old World", and perhaps even older. While the American peoples may not have developed technologies as flashy or deadly as Europeans, Africans and Asians, their agricultural accomplishments put the rest of the world to shame.

Just try to go a week without eating any new world foods, like potatoes, tomatoes, corn, most beans, squash, peppers, etc. It would truly suck.

(I also love bison and turkey, but while the latter was domesticated, the former was just kept wild in wide-open game reserves. I've never eaten guinea pig...)

It's "1491", and I recently finished it. But a lot of the stuff in it was also in Guns, Germs, and Steel, as well as a lot of pop science articles I've been seeing around. (This stuff is kind of a hobby.)

I thought Peru was for potatoes. That's all I can remember from the agriculture class I took sophomore year at IU, "Life Through the Eyes of a Potato," anyway.

So my grandfather had a gentleman's farm when I was born. Since the squash was free, mom made a bunch, froze it and fed it to me. I Turned orangish.

Moral of the story? Vary your toddler's diet.

yeah, but didn't they cultivate the coca plant like 11,000 years ago?

oh, wait, if they did that they never would have been hungry enough to develop agriculture.

My mom made excellent acorn squash when I was a kid. Served it with plenty of salt, butter and some sweet spice in it. Still haven't been able to match it.

Also tasted a WONDERFUL zucchini dish at a restaurant once. I'm sure it had 500+ calories with all that butter and herbs it was floating in, but I took thirds.

Personal opinion: If you are served a badly cooked portion of a vegetable as a kid (including but not limited to blandness) as an introduction and/or on a regular basis, you'll probably have such a bad memory of that vegetable not to be open to really tasting different ways of preparing it as an adult.

MuttsCutss - that's not accurate - they had the wheel, but only used it as a toy; they didn't need it as a tool because labor was cheap and willing.
