This, of course, is the "abiotic oil" theory, which is supported by zero evidence. If petroleum was formed abiotically in the mantle at a rate fast enough to replenish reservoirs, the surface of the Earth would be swimming in oil, awash in oil, inundated with oil. The surface of the Earth would be an ocean of oil that would have gushed forth from the mantle over millions and billions of years. As we can all see, it is not, and has not. All attempts to find "abiotic oil" have been expensive dry holes. There is zero experimental or empirical evidence to support the theory.

Meanwhile, petroleum geology, using the biotic formation theory actually works in finding oil and explaining its origins. Petroleum occurs in very specific circumstances and location (formations) consistent with the biotic theory of petroleum formation. Furthermore, the Hubbert Linearization has consistently correctly predicted the production history of every oil field to which it has been applied, petroleum geologists are not finding major new fields anywhere, and haven't for almost ten years now. It isn't like they aren't trying, and trying with ever more sophisticated techniques.

You can talk all you want about absolutes and neutrino vision. I'd rather deal in the implications about what is probable based on what's observable. "Abiotic oil" theory is a wish-fulfillment fantasy. Even if it is true (which is highly unlikely) it is irrelevant. In case you hadn't noticed, production from existing oil fields does indeed decline at a predictable rate, and no replenishment has been observed. If "abiotic oil" is replenishing existing oil fields, it does so at far too slow a rate to make any difference to us. If you're looking for more oil, improved recovery techniques are the answer, not any theory about cornucopias of infinite oil from the mantle. In the absence of better recovery technniques, you can safely assume the oil extravaganza happy-motoring party is O-V-E-R.

Don't discount biofuels. Monsanto will release some genetically modified plant that produces prodigious amounts of oil and grows in the desert...next thing you know, Arizona and New Mexico and Nevada are superpowers and Monsanto has glommed onto another entire sector of the ecnomony.

So technically the Spice Girls don't exist.

Gas prices (Ames, IA) here bottomed out at $2.81 last weekend. They jumped up to $2.88 in the last two days as they start to jack up prices for the 4th of july holiday.

$2.69 today in my home town, but I saw a lot of $2.79 signs which had been $2.69 only the day before.

Take your peak oil and shove it up your ass. It's all about the giant corp. controlled gas "shortages". Notice how this happens within a few days of a major holiday? Much like it did with Memorial Day? Notice a trend? Yep, you guessed it, the big Oil Corps are farking us for all we're worth while dildos like you guys are all about "Peak oil". farking blind asses.

Just last week, there were 15 articles about how oil prices were falling because oil inventories were the highest they had been in more than 10 years.

now...ONE week later, the prices go up because of another SHORTAGE? So from higher than a decade-old record, to lower than ever before in one week?

Nah...don't think so.

It's about time someone starts tossing these farks in jail.
