These days, Jim Carrey ain't no Jim Carrey.

2007-06-25 08:17:01 AM
I don't think it was the actor who caused that movie to suck. The movie was written terribly and had a dumb concept. No amount of acting could fix that.

Steve Carell ain't no Jim Carrey

well, really, do we need two?

Jim Carrey ain't no Jim Carrey

heh...you can only do so much Ace Ventura/Cable Guy/etc. before that bottle of cyanide starts to look tempting, I would imagine.

2007-06-25 08:57:27 AM
This isn't news anymore

/agrees with 7of7
//40 yo virgin, the office, and the daily show all proved it wasn't Carell's fault on this one

2007-06-25 08:59:23 AM
You're right, Carrell's more funny.

2007-06-25 09:02:33 AM
"Opening weekend no longer is the only barometer by which you can determine whether or not a film can turn a profit,"

In other words, the movie really, really sucked and we're doing damage control.

Nice troll.

Why would you try to do a Modern Day Noah's Ark movie? If I wanted to do a modern version of a Bible story, a Christ figure appearing in America would be hysterical. Or you could just watch 'Idiocracy'.

/just saw that film
//brilliant, just brilliant

You're right, subby. Carell actually had a good start to his career, Carrey's first lead role was in Ace Ventura. Most roles that followed weren't great either, but he did have a few movies. Odds are that Evan Almighty will hardly be a footnote on Steve Carell's career when he's as seasoned as Carrey.

keylock71: You're right, Carrell's more funny.

QFT. Shame about the movie, but he'll put it behind him.

Actually, Man on the Moon was a great flick, I think Carrey's better when he's not being "funny" all the damn time.

"Opening weekend no longer is the only barometer by which you can determine whether or not a film can turn a profit,"

Almost every single movie nowadays loses money at the box office. If you, too, know anyone who blindly and complusively buys any DVD they will put on the rack, then you see where movies are making their money.

/knows a few

2007-06-25 09:20:46 AM
That's a relief.

2007-06-25 09:20:49 AM
Even aside from being poorly written, and aside from the
fact that Steve Carrell is overrated, the movie failed
because Lauren Graham wasn't nekkid enough.

2007-06-25 09:21:59 AM
Does the distributor really think this movie will make it up in foreign sales? I can't believe there's people out there with worse tastes that people here in the US.

2007-06-25 09:27:10 AM
I went in to this movie not expecting much, and the fact that I get free tickets at my local movie theater played a large part in getting me to see it, so the only thing I invested was my time.

I walked out after 30 minutes. Should have left earlier. Carrell isn't the problem here, the movie itself is so poorly written that it's nearly unwatchable for anyone whose sense of humor is slightly more advanced than fart and poop jokes, and animals making cutesy faces reacting to weird human actions. Apparently the last 30 minutes stops even trying to be funny and starts getting very Biblical and preachy. I'm glad it was free.

2007-06-25 09:33:09 AM
Is it sad that I'm rooting for Carell to fail to keep him on the office?

Jesus, that bad? Shame, I thought Carrell was the best thing about the original. Never mind, he'll have to be in a lot more flops before he becomes a has-been. He's a really funny guy, just needs a better movie or several.

2007-06-25 09:35:38 AM
Steve will always be funny but never a huge star. And that is fine with me.

2007-06-25 09:54:38 AM
Carrey is an okay commedian. not my style, but he did what he did very well. Ace Ventura and the Cable Guy are still pretty good movies. His best work was his serious work though: Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine (Truman Show was pretty good too).

Carrell is a better commedian, for my tastes at least. The US versiion of the Office is amazing, even better than the Uk version these days (frankly, outside of Tim, Gareth and Brent, most everyone on the UK office sucked), his Daily Show work was great and the 40 year old virgin was pretty good.

I blame Wanda Sikes.

I loved the first movie and I adore Steve but this looked awful. Too bad the religious right didn't turn out in droves like the filmmakers were hoping (Shadyac saying that "Jesus is [his] greatest inspiration", etc).

Umm, what? Ace Ventura was a big hit. Did you know that only 2 movies later Carrey was making $20 mil a picture? Do you think maybe there's a reason for that?

I should have elaborated. I wasn't talking box office wise, I was talking humor wise. I agree, looking back at my post now, it's kind of fuzzy.

So Action Jackson is telling us about the last 30 minutes of a movie that he walked out on after the first 30 minutes?
I gotta say, I'm impressed!
The movie was typical summer time movie fare, had some laughs, the kids liked it, and it was worth the price of admission.
The comparison is stupid anyway, I'm sure that that either Carey or Carrel will and do have more money in the bank than most folks reading or posting in this thread will ever have.

2007-06-25 10:32:20 AM
They should have watched The Simpsons episode where Homer and Ned did the biblical half-time show. Lesson learned.

2007-06-25 10:37:06 AM
All you Carrey haters can DIAF. He's one of the best physical comedians of our time. He's a fairly good serious actor too.

Check out The Marching Morons, by CM Kornbluth. It's an adaptation.

Y'know, that would've been a better movie. God appearing, telling Carrell's character that he's the Second Coming, and to get with the saving.

The first movie worked precisely because it abandoned anything biblical-era, and put a modern spin on things. This second one, it looks like they're trying to have him recreate the exact traditional image, which is just as ridiculous as the traditional image of Christ (a light-skinned, light-haired man? Wrong ethnicity.)

Of course it's failing. It looks like a Sunday school special.

This one here (pops).

/You'll thank me

2007-06-25 10:44:01 AM
oops

2007-06-25 10:44:52 AM
Okay, I haven't seen the movie, so my questions are based on an assumption which may be false.

In the new one, Carrell is supposed to build an ark, right? So, he's not endowed with God's powers, right? So, then, he's not "Almighty", right?

THEN WHY THE TITLE?

Wouldn't Evan's Ark have been more appropriate?

Of course, I understand they're just trying to cash in on its predecessor, but the simple fact that they seem to be doing that makes me think the new movie isn't up to snuff.

2007-06-25 10:46:04 AM
Pertifly: Too bad the religious right didn't turn out in droves like the filmmakers were hoping

Do you actually think they are going to show up to a movie that portrays God as a black man?

I actually heard a mother tell her daughter God wasn't black as I was coming out of the theater at Bruce Almighty. The kid asked how do we know. Mom's answer was the Bible said so.

Scary.

2007-06-25 11:00:20 AM
Sorry for trying to warn everyone. I did use the word "apparently" in my post before referring to the last 30 minutes, as I checked up on the internet info/reviews to make sure I hadn't missed the part when the movie miraculously becomes hilarious and worth the time spent in the theatre. Turns out I was right, so I was simply passing that info on to fellow farkers so they don't have to make the same mistake.

"Apparently" you should read posts more thoroughly before calling someone out. Kurmudgeon's evaluation of the movie just tells me he doesn't have anything he'd really rather be doing than spending his time in a horrible movie.

/don't poke the bear

Bruce Almighty also sucked.

2007-06-25 11:33:25 AM
Jim Carrey actually has talent to play in different roles.

Steve Carrell, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, and Jack Black are incapable of acting in a different role. THEY. HAVE. NO. TALENT.

They play the same guy every single movie. Just different name.

2007-06-25 11:50:18 AM
Steve Carrell hardly played the "same guy" in Little Miss Sunshine.

I like actors with no talent - good to know - thanks. Excluding Jack Black, do not like him at all (even though I have been told I look like him, which is not good)

what? no, I don't think so, the first movie I saw of Jim Carrey was the Mask, and every single other movie with him is a variation of that character. Yes, even the truman show. Its the one more away from it but its still the Mask, slightly milder, but is the same goofiness, toned down a bit.

I guess is the same for all comedians actors, I cannot think of a single one with a wide variety of acting experiences, not even Chaplin.

2007-06-25 11:55:31 AM
$175m budget budget for a comedy. That's insane !

If you think that Frank from "Little Miss Sunshine," Andy from "The 40 Year old Virgin," and Michael Scott from "The Office" are the same character...then the problem isn't with Steve Carell, the problem is with you.

Carell has already shown more range in the first 5 years of his Career than Carey did in 10, try again.

2007-06-25 12:12:29 PM
Lately I am far more interested in the work being done by Steve Carell. The guy is funny. Carey seems to be sliding, possibly into insanity from the rumors flowing from his movie sets.

2007-06-25 12:32:49 PM
I hope Lauren Graham's career isn't hurt by this movie.

2007-06-25 12:35:31 PM
Jim Carrey was effin brilliant in "Series of Unfortunate Events".

2007-06-25 12:37:26 PM
Just because someone plays the same character doesn't mean they have no talent. If you have the ability to make people want to pay to watch you then you have talent. Will Ferrel's and Adam Sandler's bank accounts should prove that.

chuggernaught, The Homer Tax, etc
I agree on not blaming Carell.

The problem is with Hollywood in general. It has become 99% about the almighty dollar so when they get one concept that is mildly successful they will squeeze the ever living life out of it until it has become some mangled empty shell of the original idea.

It's like this dark miasma that kills all great concepts and movies.

2007-06-25 12:48:29 PM
If Will Ferrell continues to play Ron Burgandy and Frank the Tank, I'll continue to happily pay to see his movies.

Steve Carell will not be hurt by this flop. His other works speak well of his comedic ability. Unless he throws out a few more box office bombs, he'll still get plenty of work.

2007-06-25 12:51:42 PM
BalugaJoe: I hope Lauren Graham's career isn't hurt by this movie.

Yeah.... it would be a real shame if she had to stoop down and pose for Playboy in an attempt to jump start her career. I sure hope that doesn't happen...

I see what you did there.

I can't believe there's people out there with worse tastes that people here in the US.

The Germans buy millions of albums featuring the auditory stylings of David Hasslehoff. He's farking huge over there. What the hell is wrong with those people?

Solve_Et_Coagula

Yeah, I saw that after I posted it, heh ;-)

On a side note, does anyone think that 40 Year old Virgin would have been better off if it wasn't like four hours long?
