A Hispanic advocacy group said Schwarzenegger's comments show his "ignorance on immigration issues."

Sounds like Schwarzenegger knows EXACTLY what he's talking about and the so called hispanic 'leaders' are a might pissy about it.

I believe this use to be called immersion. Best way to learn a language.

Yes but what about all those hawt Latinas?

2007-06-16 01:56:54 PM
The governator doesn't just talk the talk. He is a TRUE example of someone who has immersed himself in the culture to great success. (understatement of the day)

You think the Hispanic leaders could pick a better target. To say that it's a "sound bite solution" is weak, at best.

/might not agree with the Governator's political positions
//but respects the hell out of him for talking the talk AND walking the walk

Well since immigrants are the experts, they should solve the problem.

Oddly enough, many people realize both sides of this issue are asshats. The governator has proven what many of us already know, greatness here is earnable:see MLK Jr.

Nobody wants to 'earn' their way anymore. They want handouts, they want someone to tell them what to do and how to do it. They want wide screen TVs, 500 channels and paris hilton stories on the evening news.

Balanced budget? fiscal responsiblity? nobody wants to hear it.

Spanish-language media plays the essential roles of providing the Hispanic community with the news and information they need and care about, and keeping them connected to their cultural heritage, a heritage that failed to provide them with work or a way of supporting their family, so they were forced to flee their country of origin in order to survive.

I also learned to not chase princesses through a forest because they will start flying and stab your ass.

If you're knocking Univision for providing Spanish language news and entertainment, you're an asshat.

I think immigrants should learn English, but it's a difficult language and there's no reason to keep them uninformed during their learning period. The trick is that they have to be motivated enough not to rely exclusively on Univision for entertainment and information. If they fail to do that, it's hardly Univision's fault.

When I learned Spanish living in Puerto Rico, I watched Spanish language television, but I also watched English movies (with Spanish subtitles). The combination really helped me to learn.

2007-06-16 04:40:45 PM
Nothing to see here. Linda Sanchez is a La Raza douche bag.

Arnold and Duncan Hunter are right. Immigrants need to assimilate in some way, in the very least, learn the damn language. Lack of communication breeds strife.

2007-06-16 04:42:18 PM
What Poopspasm said, kinda. Problem I have with the quote is the "essential roles of providing the Hispanic community with the news and information they need" part, like if they don't have Spanish language media, they won't know anything, and that's our problem. I don't go to Japan and cause a stink just because there's no English news available to me, if I moved there I'd expect to have to learn Japanese to know what's going on.

I'm sure there is English media available in Japan, but you get my point.

Difficult language? What are you talking about? English is the easiest language in the world. Try learning french or spanish...

2007-06-16 05:01:34 PM
How are we supposed to communicate and learn to get along with people when we can't speak the same language? Anyone who comes here should be prepared to understand us, not vice versa. When I visited Mexico, I learned Spanish first. That's what a good neighbor does. And as a neighbor Mexico SUCKS.

2007-06-16 05:02:28 PM
lolmao666: Difficult language? What are you talking about? English is the easiest language in the world. Try learning french or spanish...

Yeah ok. Ever have to learn the language? Ever have to figure out why through is pronounced thru, or why articles are necessary, or why it is "I go", "I went", and "I have gone"?

English is manageable, and immigrants SHOULD learn it, but you are being a tool when you understate the effort it entails.

2007-06-16 05:05:25 PM
Poopspasm If you're knocking Univision for providing Spanish language news and entertainment, you're an asshat.

Univision can provide whatever service they want, but they should be more concerned with providing their viewers a link to the cultural heritage of the country they are coming to, rather than the country they are escaping from. If I were to immigrate to Japan because of economic hardship, it would do me more good to learn how to succeed in my new home than it would be to watch reruns from the states. That doesn't mean Univision can't show programs in Spanish, but it should be with an eye to helping them adjust to American culture.

As a side note, my grandmother on my dad's side came to the U.S. from Switzerland. The only time she ever used German in the home was to write to her sisters still in Switzerland, and to tell my dad and his brothers and sisters what they were getting for Christmas -- which, since they didn't understand a word of German, didn't help them much. Now granted, it would have been cool had she taught my dad German -- because then he could have taught it to me, which would have made my language requirement in high school so much easier -- but she felt it was her choice to become a U.S. citizen, so she should cut ties with her former home. I think she made the right decision, but I am lucky we didn't share a border with a German-speaking country, because who knows if she would have put forth the effort if she didn't have to immerse herself in English.

why are immigrants or immigrant groups complaining about this?

this is one of the many reasons why i dont like the immigrants (hispanics) coming into this country. all they do is come here and whine and complain. dont worry though, the evil white people will take care of you and provide you with welfare for you and your thirty babies.

now, get the fark out of my country you pieces of worthless garbage

lolmao666 - English is among the most complicated languages in the world. Unlike virtually all major languages today, it does not come from a single language family. English speakers have to learn a precarious balance of Germanic, Romance, Native American and Slavic spellings and grammatical structures. There are very few langauges that are harder to learn.

Steezy - I take it you've never been to Japan; there's English everywhere. Also, geography lesson: Japan does not border a continent full of English speakers, and does not supposedly have 'free trade' policies (yes, true free trade includes free migration) with them. Comparing an island nation with a single language to a nation bordered by Spanish speakers is asinine.

People should be required to learn about Latin American history in school as well as US history. Ever wondered why so many people from Mexico and the rest of South & Central America are so keen on leaving? The continent has had the shiat abused out of it. Mexico's had it the worst; we took their best land, and now we're pissed that they would *dare* try to live there.

Yes, immigrants should learn English. Not because it's their duty, but because it's in their best interest. However, part of being a truly free country is that you don't get to exclude everyone who is different than you.

Punishing and trying to stop illegal immigrants is about as rational a way to deal with the problem as going after users in the War on Drugs. Go after the cause of the problem. As long as there is such a huge disparity of wealth between people living a few miles apart across an arbitrary border, people on the wrong side will continue to try to get to the right side. We may not like it, but it's the right thing to do if you're trying to provide for your family and you know that's their best hope of having food and shelter. We should stop propping up corrupt regimes and help Latin America become a place worth living in again.

We're not asking EVERY immigrant to marry into the Kennedys.
Going through Customs, maintaining a job, and not committing a felony would be cool too.

QFT. There are a lot of people who honestly don't care about the illegal immigration issue, they're just racists who are glad to have an excuse to demonize the inferior brown people. If the people were legal immigrants, they'd still be calling for their heads to be put on pikes to show those dirty Mexicans to stay out of their country. It's sad, but about 20% of Americans are still xenophobic closet racists who don't give two shiats about the issues surrounding immigration, they just want to get "the damn coloreds" out of their country. It's the exact same thing is the War on Drugs. If they were interested in solving either problem, they'd go to the source and stop the dealers and the corporations illegally hiring immigrants. Instead, they'd rather get rid of minorities, and we have the problems we're seeing today.

2007-06-16 06:56:54 PM
Control_this: Well since immigrants are the experts, they should solve the problem.

Oh, they have. The "Hispanic Leaders" learned English, started or bought a lot of businesses, and cater to Hispanics. No big deal here, they've embraced the American Dream and became successful. I start having problems with these "Hispanic Leaders" when they start making deliberate efforts to keep their fellow Hispanics frightened and ignorant in order to keep their business.

I saw a lot of this when I taught ESL in Charleston. The "Hispanic Leaders" would play the Solidarity Card, the Latino Pride Card, and when all else failed, the Intimidation Card. Fortunately, not all of them fell for it. But I do feel sorry for the ones that did.

solistus: I take it you've never been to Japan; there's English everywhere.

Yeah, just not in any useful or recognizable format. Street signs and names of places, sure. But I drove past the "Come Bubbles" Car Wash enough times to realize that (like kanjii symbols on Dragonball Z t-shirts in the states) the lettering is all about the style, not the substance.

Funny story: my neighbor (Japanese lady, had been a stewardess) taught English for Berlitz. One day I had just gotten home from work as her students came down. I waved, said "hello," to the group. All of them were stunned into silence. I bet the parents that were waiting felt real good about the money they spent on those lessons.

JudgeReinhold: Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.

I'm so busting that one out on the wife when she gets home.

Self made millionaire that didn't know a lick of english when he came over here. Somehow he married a kennedy made millions and now gives up a hefty salary to become governor.

Hispanics need to realize, if you want to move UP in america, you gotta play the game, learn english, get a degree, and rack up on those licensing or certificates of trade.

2007-06-16 07:16:55 PM
People biatched about the Germans and Irish and whatnot not integrating. Surprise! - their kids a couple generations down are American through-and-through and we all go to St. Patrick's Day parades and Oktoberfest celebrations.

"Waaah why won't they assimilate" folks are a bunch of crybabies. It'll all sort itself out in the long run.

Uh, I did learn Spanish. I'm fluent from my time dating a Venezuelan girl and living in Puerto Rico. It's not hard at all. The only difficulty is adjusting gramatically to the fact that it's sort of an object oriented language (if you write VB, you'll know what I mean).

English on the other hand is widely thought of as one of the world's harder languages to learn. You're letting the fact that you are a native color your impressions of the difficulty it entails.

There's a reason that so many grammar Nazi's stay so busy around here...even though those who post here are, by and large, native English speakers.

Poopspasm: There's a reason that so many grammar Nazi's stay so busy around here...even though those who post here are, by and large, native English speakers.

No, it's just because most people are too damn lazy to differentiate between to, two, and too, or they stick an apostrophe into every word they pluralize.

That said, English is no more difficult than any other language. Each language has its difficulties: the Romance languages have their genders and 87 tenses, English has articles and non-standardized spelling due to its hodgepodge of word origins, and the Scandanavians are just farked up.

2007-06-16 07:42:30 PM
The last study I saw on this suggested that the adoption rate of English speaking among Latin immigrants was higher than that of other immigrant groups not only now but also historically. Does anyone have any real evidence to suggest otherwise?

Nemo's Brother

There's no disagreement going on here. There's me stating the factual definition of a word, and you consciously choosing to disregard reality. The belief that a particular race is genetically superior to another is racism. If you believe that a particular race is genetically superior to another, you are a racist. That is not my opinion, that is the literal textbook definition of the word.

I've read a fair amount of stuff as far as language difficulty ratings, and most of what I've seen places English right there with Swahili, dutch, Swedish, Norweigan, etc. Not quite on the level of an Asian language, but only a tier removed.

At any rate, back to the topic...

Yes, immigrants should learn the language. that goes without saying. What I find ironic is that when you set up a program for teaching people, the natives get bent out of shape. People biatched about have an ELI program at UF, saying they "should have learned English before they came." Because, you know, that so easy to do in farking Russia or Germany.

And yes, I know that they could learn english (to some extent) even overseas. i would respond that I could pick up some Spanish in the States too, but that doesn't mean I want to go take a farking economics class taught in Spanish.

I swear man, part of the reason that immigrants don't assimilate is that so many people make them feel unwelcome for things that are outside their control.
