I live in Phx, AZ. Yes the dessert. We are always being told to conserve water...But there will be a day when we will have to go to some special watering hole, wait in a long line, and pay a huge amount of money just for a gallon of water. What a world we live in.
You. What a world you live in. I live in New York. I have looked into reducing my home water consumption (dual flush toilets, maybe a waterless urinal, motion sensing faucet - the standard) becuase it's what I do for commercial clients. But since water here is essentially free and insanely abundant, there is no point.

I would like to know why we are not working towards
desalination plants for future water use?

Desalination is very energy intensive. You have the brute force boiling at over 8000 btus per gallon, or the big ass 'ol pumps needed to run an RO system. No such thing as a free lunch.

Water wars will in essence be energy wars since in most cases energy can be converted to drinking water.

superdolfan1 - wrong.

in a secret backroom deal, our "mayor" gave the contract for the water company management to Veolia. there's NO water shortage, there's a reservoir on the NE side of town that never gets used more than once every 10 years as a water supply, and it's got a LOT of water.

I assume you are talking about Geist. Are you sure about that? I thought all of Fishers got their water from Geist Reservior.

warmachine999 So does that mean we are drinking purified urine?

Ewwwww!!!

You think that's new water out there? Man, the last glass of water you drank was probably pissed by a whole range of animals out there, like dinosaurs and Jesus.

Exactly. It is amazing how many people don't get that. We learned that in, what, 4th grade science class.

TheCid:
"And BuzzBoy, you are supposed to have a drain pipe attached to your air conditioner. Look up a "condensate drain" sometime."

I do have a drain pipe. I installed a bypass to divert water into a 5 gallon bucket during water restriction periods so that I can water my plants. When there is no water shortage, the condensate is routed into the sewer as it is in most homes.

Warhammer 999 - Sorry, have to call shennanigans on you using shower water on your lawn. Unless you don't use soap or shampoo...

I also agree with the other comments regarding industrial water use. I work for a semiconductor firm; they use massive amounts of water. I doubt my family uses in a year the amount of water it takes to make your pentium...

Call shennanigans all you want...Soapy water is better than no water at all, and as we prefer organic type soaps, it left the plants and lawn clean, shiny, and surprisingly bug free.

Now, once we got some actual rain, the lawn foamed a bit, but hey, that was kinda cool looking...

Moron Americans.

Yeah, gas at record prices and running low... someone we pull off record consumption.

Same with a drought.

Sadly, no. I am not trolling. If I can find the pictures, I'll scan them and put them up.

Surpheon, if you really think that you are safe from a water shortage then you are as ignorant as you sound. Unfortunately, people in YOUR frame of mind is what my world doesn't need. What's the point? The point is that once we start expieriencing severe water shortages, in the southwest, then places like New York and its so called ample amounts of water will be shipped to those dryer regions which will inadvertantly affect YOU. But what the heck keep feeling safe in your wonderful world. Meanwhile, I will continue to do my part as a concerned citizen and conserve, conserve, conserve.
