If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down.

/Seriously, you don't have to flush EVERY time you use the bathroom.
//You don't have to water your lawn either. It can get by on its own if you have the right kind of grass.

Hehe, I was out watering my lawn today. Oops.

I pay for it and I'm not having my dead lawn go up in flames because some douchebag throws his cig in my yard.

/happened before

The septic owner's mantra...

want to slow the water consumption? well, demand is high and supply is low.

It's not that hard. Hell, we do it here every summer

If it's green, get a tox screen.

Anyway, Australians WISH they could flush toilets when there's only a turd in it. They have to get an act of Parliament with a two thirds majority to flush a toilet.

Obviously Indy doesn't have the right rules in place when it comes to conservation of water. We went to a level 3 last week, which means that you can only "hand water" your plants on Mon. and Th. if your house number is even and Tue. and Fri. if you're odd. No automatic sprinklers at all and if you get caught on the wrong day, $200 fine. Oh, and the hand watering can only be done before 10am or after 10pm. Anyway, the article states that they would like to have everyone in Indy stop watering their lawns until the next time it rains. What? Why would you want to water if it has rained?

As far as jay_vee's comment - I'm beginning to be grateful that I'm not in Australia, if what you're saying is correct.

2007-06-14 10:07:41 PM
It was a bit of an exaggeration, but in parts they've had unprecedented drought problems for a few years now, and have some very restrictive rules.

If there is such an imbalance between supply and demand, why not just reset the price to take care of it?

Isn't it obvious? When a necessary resource becomes scarce, people start hoarding it like crazy. They should have just looked the other way rather than informing everyone to panic slowly.

I get about 15 to 25 gallons of water a day from my air conditioner in the basement. I pour it into my rain barrel outside and use it to water all the plants every couple of days whether it's a water day or not. They can't tell me how to use the humidity my air conditioner has removed from my house.

2007-06-14 11:07:09 PM
We're on level 5 restrictions here (a state capital city in Australia) which means no outside watering AT ALL, no washing your car, no watering plants or lawn, etc, etc.

They're sending out nasty letters and/or largish fines for people using over 140 litres per day per person (that's 37 gallons/day for you US ppl).

Guess which state government hasn't been spending anything at all on water infrastructure for the last 15 years? Current projections show unless it rains we'll be out of water in less than a year. They're madly building a recycled water plant/pipeline and desal plants, but who knows if they'll get them finished in time. Things are tight.

2007-06-14 11:08:41 PM
Anyone who feels the need to water grass needs to /wrists.

Homes should be set up to use gray water for this sort of thing, but that'll never be commonplace because of too many idiots.

And BuzzBoy, you are supposed to have a drain pipe attached to your air conditioner.
Look up a "condensate drain" sometime.

MEOWSPIDER If there is such an imbalance between supply and demand, why not just reset the price to take care of it?

I think you underestimate how much people depend on green lawns to mitigate penis size in the dry regions.

If you raised the price so much that people couldn't water there lawns, Im pretty sure most of these asshats would start screaming about unalienable rights.

Whoops.. sorry bout the bold Italics there... must be getting tired.

I had heard about some HOA's that are sending out nasty grams that peoples lawns are not getting enough water, and they need to be within a specific range of green, government restrictions prohibiting your from watering or not.

Hmmmm...Choice of pissing off the HOA or the local govt...

I vote for pissing on the lawn...but then you could be arrested for indecent exposure....

What I did in years past was have the family members (All 3 of us) shower and not let the water go down the tub drain. Then I scooped it out and used that to water my plants and lawn. When I was 'caught' doing it, I showed them where the water was coming from and they told me I couldnt do that either, as the water that goes down the drain is recycled back into drinking water...

So does that mean we are drinking purified urine?

Ewwwww!!!

want to slow the water consumption? well, demand is high and supply is low.

So I guess water will soon cost $65 a barrel as well.

Oh wait..Exxon doesnt do water.

Did anyone else notice Rob Schneider wrote that article? Interesting.

If more people would set the deck height on their mowers to 4" there would be less of a need to water.

2007-06-14 11:26:15 PM
superdolfan1 - wrong.

in a secret backroom deal, our "mayor" gave the contract for the water company management to Veolia. there's NO water shortage, there's a reservoir on the NE side of town that never gets used more than once every 10 years as a water supply, and it's got a LOT of water.

the only thing a watering ban would do would be to raise the profits of veolia and let the rich people on the afore-mentioned full reservoir continue to jetski in opulent luxury. yeah, things are dry, but the effing CITY is still actively watering its golf courses.

check your facts before commenting.

2007-06-14 11:29:54 PM
Step 1: drink lots of beer
Step 2: offer copious urine output as recycled drinking water
Step 3: profit!

We've had water restrictions here in Brisbane for the past year or so. I don't think we've been allowed to water our lawn in like 6 months.

It's not a big deal.

I did an article on my city's waste water treatment plant for my schools newspaper. Students found it quite interesting about all the things people flush down toilets... feminine pads, jewelery, money (which they wash and reuse) and "Michigan White Trout" aka condoms. What was important to note is that the place was powered by the poop of the people (they burned methane gas), let the solids (poop and other bits) dry out in drying beds where it would be sold to farmers for fertalizer. To answer your question: on the subject of recycled pee. In a roundabout way we drink recycled pee. The waste water treatment plant will treat and clorinate the liquids and release it back into the water source (in my case the nearby bay), my water comes from the bay so in effect I'm drinking other peoples treated pee. But, keep in mind, pee is sterile.

-Now you know!-

I was just BSing with some friends about how the coming resource wars are going to be over water, not so much oil, in this century.

Just beat me to it Benza.

Brisbane City Council has sent around 4 minute timers to all households, the idea being that you cut your shower time down to 4 minutes.

Problem is that they bought them at the lowest cost possible, so the timers range from 2 minutes to 10 minutes. Not helping.

We are on Level 5 restrictions at the moment, won't be too long before more drastic measures are required....

2007-06-14 11:56:14 PM
Yet another example of how people have no common sense. They'd rather water their lawns than have water to drink? Ok. See how long that lasts when the water actually runs out.

megain: "if you want a nice plush green lawn, don't farking move to the desert. or, alternatively, move out of the desert"

have you been to indianoplace before? not normally considered a desert community. :) not that you don't have a point about too many people in the desert. i travel to southern california frequently for work, and every time i go out there it seems that the "inland empire" has moved another 5 miles into the desert. it's like some kid playing sim city said "hey, i like this strip mall and this housing development... i'm going to drop copies of it for 50 miles in all directions until i run up against the mountains!"

of course, the real issue up in indy is, as theswissnavy pointed out, is the city tried to privatize all of their services a few years back. to put it charitably, they have had mixed results.

/cincinnatian glad that there's a city government nearby that makes our city government look functional.
//yes, i know jerry springer used to be our mayor. but we do have plenty of water. that is, if you're willing to drink the water out of the ohio river...

Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink. I live in Phx, AZ. Yes the dessert. We are always being told to conserve water. But drive around this magnificent city and people and businesses (even the local gov. downtown) water their lawns or wash their cars and yes the golf courses are some of the greenest known. But there will be a day when we will have to go to some special watering hole, wait in a long line, and pay a huge amount of money just for a gallon of water. What a world we live in.

desalination plants for future water use?
WTF?

I think if I resided in an HOA that was that farking fascist during a drought, I would consider moving.

But anyway, I hope people getting those letters are forwarding them on to local government officials, so that the HOA can get a smackdown.

skotrik, not to mention the irrigation districts (around indian school and 44th st?) where they literally flood their lawns in order to water them

TheCid: And BuzzBoy, you are supposed to have a drain pipe attached to your air conditioner.

I think BuzzBoy is saying that he's harvesting water from the air conditioner Skywalker style, and watering plants with that instead of water directly from a tap.

As always, the comments FTFA are where you find the true comic gold. It has turned into an all out flame war blaming the lack of water on, among other things: illegal aliens, global warming, and an oil company conspiracy.

Most of the others sound like this:

How are you going to ask someone to stop watering their lawn?! Not me, i'm going to continue to give my lawn, of which i own, water! Just for your F.Y.I., i was outside until 12:00 last night, watering my lawn. You can rest assure, i will water it again this evening!

/can't stop laughing at "for your F.Y.I."

Yeah but Coke, Pepsi and Bechtel do and if you do a little Googling you'll see that they are using the 3rd world as a testing ground for the corporate takeover of what should be a human right.

STOP BUYING BOTTLED WATER! THE MORE PROFIT THEY MAKE THE MORE THEY WILL GO AFTER IT. IT'S LIKE MONTGOMERY BURNS AND HIS GIANT UMBRELLA.

Guillermo, Yes I have seen this. It is also done on 24th st. and Roosevelt. I have also noticed alot of broken sprinklers that just shoot out into the street lately. I am no saint but I can proudly say that at my house we do what we can to save water and energy. Now if I could just save my money. Yeah right!

Warmachine999: So does that mean we are drinking purified urine?

one of the more interesting classes that i took to get my general ed credits was an environmental science class.

one of the more fun things that we had to do was to take the total amount of water on the planet and then divide that by the number of people and the amount of water that the average person needs to survive per day. the end result was that ever single drop of water if filtered through a human body ever 58 years give or take (this is not counting the ice caps and deep ground water) then add in all animals 5 years the vast majority of the worst parts of what comes out is eaten by microbes, and whats left is by plants.

So, I have to wonder... is the increase in Indystar stories a result of more farkers from Indy (like me) or are we really just getting to be that bad?
