Are we supposed to be shocked/outraged that a rat pack costs less than a can of Winalot ?

'Coz I'm not.

Mmm... Biscuits Brown

Anyone who has ever been in any military service anytime anywhere could have told you this.

dogs are drafted against their non-will, the least they can do is feed em good...

2007-06-14 09:21:25 AM
I blame bush.

2007-06-14 09:21:29 AM
As long as they're being fed, who cares how much it costs?

/MREs are actually pretty yummy, though

2007-06-14 09:22:07 AM
If it were the French army, I would say that the dogs might be worth more than the soldiers.

2007-06-14 09:23:12 AM
Heh. Donkeys that worked in coal mines in PA were treated better than the miners. A trained donkey was hard to come by and expensive to replace. Miners were cheap and plentiful. Sounds like the same thing, subby.

You know, I remember reading an article somewhere, pre-Internet, that the British Army actually had very good food, and that they trained their cooks to Chef standards. Of course, this was obviously years ago, so the information could be outdated, but an interesting counterpoint nonetheless.

Also, it could be true that they spend less per person than per dog because there are a lot more people than dogs in the Army, therefore they can get better deals. Plus, they can buy the raw ingredients for the meal fed to soldiers, and have the cooks prepare it, whereas I bet they have to buy the dogfood pre-processed, and perhaps to stupidly stringent regulations.

Patently untrue. Even if you're buying Hills Science for a 125 lb lab you're still paying significantly less than than $3 a day they spend on the humans. Quanitity discounts for buying by the ton(ne) would surely outweight shipping costs to whereveristan.

With that being said, I have no problem believing that the food they serve the humans is absolutely horrible.

2007-06-14 09:32:11 AM
Eat the dogs and take their meals. Problem solved.

Simple solution: Eat the dogs.

Everyone's a winner.

Anyone who has ever been in any military service anytime anywhere could have told you this.

MREs are pretty good nowadays.

They got rid of my favorite, though, "Country Captain Chicken."

The nice thing about dogs and pets in general: you're never entirely out of a protein source if the shiat hits the fan. At least for a while.

2007-06-14 09:36:33 AM
How much could used cigar butts floating in phleghm cost anyway?

2007-06-14 09:37:30 AM
Probably what is the case is that the food for the soldiers is less expensive to buy anyway.

/work on an Arsenal

2007-06-14 09:43:12 AM
Meh, let the dogs eat soldiers, they'll spend even less this way.

2007-06-14 09:43:44 AM
I love dogs.

but can't eat a whole one.

except for those little yappy ones. they are a good light snack.

2007-06-14 09:44:12 AM
If they fed the dogs the same thing they fed the soldiers, it could have made them sick!

My brother has a few pouches of that one.

Also, anyone else catch this:

if the british army finds a human soldier who can smell an underground mine from 500 feet away, by all means give that soldier a big steak.

Essayons to that. And a big steak to the dog who can CLEAR that mine, too.

This is why America is moving towards squirrel troops. They are cheaper to feed and they are much smaller targets for the enemy to hit.

"And he claimed that U.S. troops are given high-quality meat while British soldiers make do with cheap sausages and chips."

High-Quality meats??!?!?!ELEVENTY-ONE

Ham and Chicken loaf? Chicken-Ala-Death?
Dehydrated pork pattie?

We didn't rename MRE to mean "Meal Rejected by Ethiopia" for no reason.

Well dogs can be pretty picky about their food. Plus, I call Shenanigans; how many times a day does the average soldier eat compared to a dog? Torture the numbers and they will confess to anything.

He might be refering to Iraq, where most soldiers eat in KBR run dining facilities.

The Vegetable Pattie (fake meat) MRE entree is one of my favorites. Just add the tobasco and some salt and slap it on the bread and it's really not too bad. I'll take seconds on these any day.

Avoid the chicken cavatelli and the veggie manicotti at all costs. When it comes to food, I'm a human garbage disposal, but I can't stomach that shiat.

2007-06-14 10:34:48 AM
At least subby didn't put "...wait, what" at the end of the headline.

It's kind of hard to tell, but from the article they seem to be complaining about the food they get while in base, rather than the MRE style ration packs. i could be wrong, though.

mildmildwest: and for how many days and consecutive meals did you eat MRE's?

I was in the field for a week last month, and that's all we had. Not long enough to get sick of them, though I've been there in the past.

I won't dispute that they can get pretty monotonous after a while, like anything else.
