The US may not even be in the top 40 in terms of alcohol consumption, but I'm quite sure we're number one in meth use and recreational pain-killer proscriptions.

15.5 litres of alcohol per person in a year works out to about 1.5 pints of beer (5% alcohol by volume) per day every day for a year.

2007-06-13 05:01:03 AM
I was thinking, where's Russia and Finland?
but...its in litres of consumption...Uk?IRL = pints of beer

Russia and Finland = Vodka.....so the litre comsumption is less (I would hope)

N'ah, Finns n Russkies drink way more then the Irish or Luxembougers ever could.

In Australia's defence, these figures are based on amount of alcohol sold. Homebrewing is popular in Australia, and anyone can run a still.

I was on the edge of submitting this before, also without a funny headline, but didn't.

Either way, the US has a lot of catching up to do.

Looking at the list, this is what suprises me about the #3 country on the list (Hungary), as from experience most Hungarians prefer hard spirits (a type of brandy called palinka) or even wine over beer. So I'm honestly scared to think of what their real alcohol consumption must be.

/Hungarian uncle owns a vinyard back there
//in the Tokay region, for those who know what that means

2007-06-13 05:34:51 AM
13.7 litres a year?

That's weekly. I think they got the Irish stats wrong.

/Is Irish
//Nursing a mild hangover
///After 8 pints last night.
////That;s 4.5 litres for the metrically inclined.

2007-06-13 05:43:35 AM
"One explanation is that the duty on alcohol is relatively cheap in the tiny nation, encouraging booze tourism from its more heavily taxed neighbours. No such explanation for the Irish, however, who quaff 13.7 litres a year, according to the World Health Organisation."

Farking idiot journalist. What about the 8 million + tourists who come here every year and spend their holidays getting wasted.

2007-06-13 05:48:28 AM
Good point Cormee.

Mind you though I only tend to see American tourists drinking half pints. Canadians tend to go for the full pint. (You can tell they are Canadian or at least pretending to be by the inevitable maple leaf badge that they will have on somewhere.)

But it is rare, at least in my neck of the woods to see any tourists wasted. Most of the pubs I go into would be full of locals.

2007-06-13 05:48:53 AM
It's litres of pure alcohol. So it doesn't discriminate against those who prefer either hard alcohol or beer/wine.

2007-06-13 05:49:05 AM
it's litres of pure alcohol consumed per year, so it's not the volume of the drink, it's the amount of alcohol within each drink that's consumed...

2007-06-13 05:49:55 AM
No, you nitwits, 8 pints of of beer is about 225ml pure alcohol, which what they measured in TFA.

2007-06-13 05:59:26 AM
I consume about 32 liters a year.

As an Englishman I'm digusted to see Europeans overtaking us in yet traditionally British activity. For far too long foreigners have been using underhand tactics to overtake us and make a mockery of our once great country.
Its time for Britons to fight back. Beer was what built the Empire. Its time to make Britain Great again. Embrace traditional British values and head to the pub this lunchtime. Together we can lift Britain back up into the top 5.

I'm boozing for Britain

2007-06-13 06:19:25 AM
"In America, where stricter minumum-age requirements apply, the average person drinks 8.6 litres a year."

I guess they had to take that into account, but i think i'd like to see average consumption for people ABOVE legal drinking age.

2007-06-13 06:30:59 AM
eh.. perfect example of making statistics fit anything. Consumption of alcohol by volume per capita does not equal consumption per LEGAL capita. Nor does it equal consumption volume per actual drinker.... Can be interpreted in a multitude of ways and since I'm kind of drunk myself right now...uh...

You have to wonder how much the European figures (like Luxembourg's) are bolstered by Brits stocking up on cheap booze abroad. I suppose it depends on how these figures are calculated, but the article doesn't give that info.

2007-06-13 06:44:16 AM
The US drinks 8.6 liters of pure alcohol? So a liter of 80 proof liquor counts as .4 liters?

If so, that means it's really 21.5 liters of liquor or better than a handle per person per month.

I might have done that in college, but not since (except maybe wedding season).

2007-06-13 06:44:34 AM
The US figure should be halfed, as that watery piss they drink clearly doesn't count as beer.

I bet if we snuck a few pages in he bible stating that jeebus loves booze then the USA would top that list before next Monday.

/And jeebus said unto Matthew "If thou canst chuggeth like an apostle can then what is thou doing with a bottle in thy hand"

Go us Aussies!

...And personally I think we should be ranked higher, but yes, these results seem fairly accurate.

No ranking for Florida?????

2007-06-13 08:02:17 AM
SkArcher: I'm surprised the Australia isn't higher up that ranking.

We Aussies tend to drink low alcohol content drinks (compared to spirits) such as beer. Believe me, we drink a lot of beer.

/drinks 3-5 beers a night
