To be fair, reading is probably much more difficult for most of those asshat parents than jamming a pizza into their maw.

Just think how many more crayons would firmly have been taken into fist and put to paper if the food had been shut down, too.

It's funny how we encourage kids to sit motionless for hours and read, claiming this is a good activity. As an English major (and freshman-level writing instructor), I can tell you that reading is very unhealthy--sitting motionless for hours, hunched over a book, oblivious to the world. But you'll never hear anyone claim reading is "bad for you" (like some will claim about watching tv, playing video games, or sitting at the computer) because reading has a positive connotation.

Who is encouraging this type of reading?

Yeah. Crazy how we think that developing an understanding of the literary world, expanding vocabulary, and being exposed to new ideas is better for a child's education than Spongebob or Pokemon.

As someone who grew up in Simpsonville (15 mi outside of Greenville), I can confidetly say that this is the pseudo rednick capital of the world. Sure....they have fewer teeth in Kentucky, and tend to have sex with their sister's more....but Greenville is a serious wanna-be. I'm betting that there are more confetterate flags in SC per capita than any other state in the contiguous US.

/After typing this I feel I need dentures, and I'm strangely feeling horny for my sister....

It is ironic that liberals would fight for the right to do "palmistry" and "astrology" in school, but shudder at the thought of PRAYER in school. WHERE IS YOUR SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE NOW, LIEBERALS???

Way too obvious. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

It's not Greenville, or Greenville County. It's Pickens County, which is next to Greenville County. It's just reported in metro Greenville, since Pickens County is a hotbed of Bubba-ism.

Pickens County is scary.

Greer > Simpsonville

And if you think Greenville is the wannabe center of the redneck ouniverse you should get out more. Central Florida, eastern Alabama, and southwestern Virginia would like a word with you.

My problem is that they have a week devoted to pseudo-scientific astrology claptrap. The religion angle aside, why is this on the program? What's next - a seminar on how not step on a crack, break your mother's back?

Do any of these butt-twang parents realize that they could send their kids to the library regardless of whether there's a scheduled reading program there?

While the parents who complained are complete tards, whose idiotic idea was this session anyway? I have no moral or religious problems with it, but if you only have six sessions why spend one of them on stupid topics like this.

Next article will be about the locals residents burning down the library to rid their community of those Devil Worshipers.

Since they don't have the excuse of lead in the groundwater, I am leaning toward "If she ain't gud 'nuf fer HER fam'ly, she ain't gud 'nuf fer ours!"

Reading is a good activity, but like other good activities, it is an important part of this complete breakfast. I think that doing nothing but reading is just as bad for you as not reading at all.

FrancoFile: My problem is that they have a week devoted to pseudo-scientific astrology claptrap. The religion angle aside, why is this on the program? What's next - a seminar on how not step on a crack, break your mother's back?

It doesn't really say what the overall goal of the program was. Perhaps kids were given a book to read that had astrology as a plot point, and this was the kick-off session to get them interested in the topic. Or maybe they were just trying to get kids to visit the library more and register for a card. Or maybe this was supposed to be a fun session for completing books on the summer reading list. The article doesn't make the educational value clear, but I can think of possibilities off of the top of my head, which is more than I can say for a pizza party.

2007-06-11 04:42:18 PM
cant like other parents um... complain back that the program was canceled? so its the number of complains overruns the previous stupid complaints? gawd... how can parents complain about a completely volunteer program that their kids would probably never have attended anyway...
