Here, risqué businesses and children are oddly and inextricably linked.

And here I was thinking that the city would be about East St Louis.

You have to admire a town that doesn't simply park a school bus on its main street, with stop sign extended, and wait for the out of town folks to go around it. Maybe they're Methodists?

Most clubs now only offer $2 bills as change.
Guys still flip as many bills, but the earnings are double.

You did notice that the local school was "Lovejoy School," right? ;)

Us St. Louis residents refer to the area simply as "The East Side."

Best strip clubs east of Vegas!

Support your local economy! Can we relocate Fark and all its users to this magical mecca?

"Strip clubs help send local kids to trade school or college. They pay for after-school programs and youth outings."

A bizarre problem I'd never experienced until I began working at a strip club: some children's charities won't take your money!

We did finally find one, though.

Nice juxtoposition between the words adult business in the headline and the first words of TFA: "About a dozen teen and preteen girls..."

Made me laugh.

"Strip clubs help send local kids to trade school or college"

It's not so strange when you think about where kids come from in the first place.

I have been to this wonderful place and it's chock full of yummy goodness. You gotta drive through some nasty turf to get there though...

//basically no rules there...

My kinda town. This one (Fort Collins, Colorado) is trying to run the sex shop where I work out of business. Even though we've been here for over 40 years.

2007-06-11 09:15:25 AM
Ah, Sauget, how I miss it. I remember going to Pop's when they would occasionally book a good band, and seeing all of the strippers from the surrounding clubs disappear into vans in the parking lot for a little blow of one form or another.

/Homesick for St. Louis, even the seedier suburbs.

2007-06-11 09:15:56 AM
Sigh... me no good reader well.

I meant Adult industry in the headline, not adult business. That snuck in from further down in the article.

Why did I know that this story had to involve East St. Louis? Actually it doesn't. Brooklyn is a town just north of it. Avoid that area at all costs. It is one of America's finest shiatholes.

/only been there once
//on a highway passing through
///at one point East St. Louis had no police

(Fort Collins, Colorado)

Dude!

I'm from Greeley originally.

Do you have any idea how freaked out people got in my hometown when the first adult bookstore set up shop within the city limits? It was 1984 and there were pickets up and down the block preventing people from going in the front door. The idea was to make the patrons feel, by forcing them to use the back way, that they were doing something shameful.

Ft. Collins was positively cosmopolitan by comparison.

mrmagnet- Ha...if you're from NoCo then you know EXACTLY where I work. Yeah, that shop in Greeley is actually owned by us as well. Funny thing- now nobody in Greeley cares because the town is going seedy as hell, but here in the Fort they're trying to do this whole "upscale" regentrification thing. =P

2007-06-11 09:27:19 AM
They should change the name of this city to 'Pornytown'!

2007-06-11 09:28:13 AM
Mayor Nathaniel O'Bannon:
"We're an impoverished city,..."

Maybe you would have more money if you stopped giving it to strippers.

I love this part:

Robbyne Moore, 32, (once drove) by the adult district...and her young son and daughter caught a glimpse of a woman in a tight miniskirt, scant top and cowboy boots exiting a cab.

Her son looked out the window and said, "Ooh, ooh."

Her 5-year-old daughter said the woman "looked so pretty."

"I am like, 'Oh, hell no,'" Moore says.

Thread over.

brap wins hands down.

/hands down where you ask?

I love the dumb stories people tell reporters:

Robbyne Moore, 32, said she tries not to drive by the adult district with her kids in the car. Once she did, and her young son and daughter caught a glimpse of a woman in a tight miniskirt, scant top and cowboy boots exiting a cab.

Her son looked out the window and said, "Ooh, ooh."

Her 5-year-old daughter said the woman "looked so pretty."

"I am like, 'Oh, hell no,'" Moore says.

The end.

Drive through during daylight hours and you'll pass by Brooklyn before you know it. Drive there during the night and it's another story altogether. When I was there about 13 years ago for a bachelor party, there were two potholes near those clubs that could seriously wreck the undercarriage of any wheeled vehicle known to man. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if they're still there.

2007-06-11 09:35:20 AM
For those of us who live in the area, this deserves the "Obvious" tag.

/me likes me seedy strip-club towns safely across the river, easily accessible but not too close

2007-06-11 09:36:18 AM
Oh Jesus, how did I miss this gem on the first pass?

"Pastor Darryl Calmese of Hazelwood preaches that true religious transformation is akin to mixing Kool-Aid."

That... that is classic.

Methinks the Walmart borg cube may have a difficult time assimilating the economy of this town...I think we might have finally found the anomaly needed to destroy the Walmart collective!

The "Cupid's" chain? They have a club in FL that is one of the last male strip joints around.

Yeah, Greeley has always been a mixed bag. Lots of cute homes and good schools. The unbearable smell of feedlots and slaughterhouses.

I have a workplace-handy selective olfactory as a result tho.

2007-06-11 09:38:48 AM
Ive been to Roxy's out there, when I go to the St Louis east side for the strip clubs, I dont mess with the ones in Sauget, head to Centerville or brooklyn, the chicks are all about full on naked.

Fapinator

When you saw the headline and the stltoday.com link, didn't you think you were about to read an article about Sauget? Brooklyn is where Sauget strippers go when they get too long in the tooth. Sauget is much better. Oops, not strippers - I mean "exotic dancers".

I run a small cash-strapped town, so I'm getting a kick, etc.

And every Sunday they sing the hymn,

"Whaaat a friend we have in peeenis!"

2007-06-11 09:45:18 AM
mrmagnet- Ohhhhhhh no no no...I thought you were talking about the 8th Avenue Arcade in Greeley. And yeah, f*** that town. F*** this one, too. I'm moving to Denver as soon as the city has their way and shuts us down. =P
