Damn you, Krymore, beat me to it!

That still supports the idea that the reasons the Terrsts have for killing us have less to do with the contents of their book than with their sociopolitical background.

bung ho

Surely, if we're all descended from Noah, we're all Jews?

But yeah, I don't remember that bit either. It certainly takes a rosy view of genocide though.

Actually, it'd be more accurate to say that the Torah mandates genocide, as long as the victims have more foreskin than you (and sometimes even when they don't).

Porrick: That's missing the point again. I'd be really surprised if their motives were truly religious - I mean, they dress it up in bullshiat doctrine to make it easier to sell, but that's not why they kill people. They kill people for the same reasons any organized group kills people - politics and power.

We're talking about two different things. Acknowledging that the religious justification does not hold water morally is no reason to ignore or fail to examine the justifications for antiterrorism purposes.

I think the reason for Jon Snow pointing this out lies more in the area of practical application then it does the realm of ethics and religious hypocrisy.

Jon Snow,

I get that we're talking about slightly different things

I'm just not sure how reading the passages about Taqfir would have stopped the Madrid bombing. Sure it helps us to know their marketing techniques, but I'd say it helps us more to understand their true motives. I've seen precious little analysis of that, save the odd liberal "it's all our fault" mantra...

/not saying it's not our fault, but I'd like to see some proper analysis

One of the ringleaders of the group was a known criminal to the Spanish authorities (drug dealer from Morroco, Jamal Ahmidan, nicknamed "El Chino"). Though they noted increasing noise about Islamic terrorists operating inside of Spain, and had planty of circumstantial evidence that Chino was in contact with extremists, they did not believe that he was an extremist because of his public, un-Islamic lifestyle. This failure to conclusively connect him and others to radical Islam made him a lower priority, and surveillance on him was ceased and the resources shifted to monitoring the safety of the Crown Prince, who was soon to be married.

Believing that radicalized muslims would act in accordance to Islamic traditions at all times because of their faith was a huge stumbling block in initial investigations to the 9/11 hijackers as well. They were observed drinking beer and going to strip clubs, IIRC, and thus were not viewed as serious Islamists.

Looks like we agree with each other. Oh, was that another bible-bash thread up the page a bit?

Ooh, see you there

m0llusk: Fourty years in what amounts to a prison without freedoms, trade, or a future should have converted these people into peace loving zen masters. This is so frustrating!

They are killing each other over a power struggle between 2 terrorist groups. And there is the blood feud aspect that seems to be ignored.

After Israel's pullout from Gaza the attacks on Israel continued and intensified. Instead of showing the world how they are capable of creating a normative society, the palestinians chose to continue their Jihad, which is of course not a big surprise.

Basically you are going for the classic, blaming the arabs' incompetence on the jews. Not the terrorist gangs, the religious fanatics who are controlled by leaders from Iran and Syria.

What is your excuse for the free muslim fanatics in Sudan who are literally raping Darfur ?

Sorry, but I couldn't see; did you have a straight face when you wrote that?

Actually, I think Abraham is considered the first Jew (?), what with that whole covenant with God and uncountable descendants deal.

jayday,

You pretty much described every religion in my eyes."

Then you're farking blind. Anybody else think the liberals have just about used up our last nerve on this topic. Muslim=young=no sex=frustrated=angry=religion says kill non-mos ok=not farking buddy and not equitable to other farking religions in the present tense so cut that farking lame argument out.

If we don't show a strong hand and determination right here (thank you GWB, most farking courageous president since Abe Lincoln, ok Harry Truman) we would really be in the shiat in short order. The demographics are not the friend of the enlightened west right here. The demographics say the ME is going to get more unruly before it gets less.

jayday:Just seems more and more clear that religion is nothing but a very convenient and effective excuse used by these militant groups to attack, conquer, brainwash, and control the vulnerable (which historically have always been the young, uneducated, and poor).

I'm glad you lumped all religions in that sentence because, as we all know, all religions are equally dangerous.

And even you use of the words "nothing but" is great, because, again, as we all know, religion has no redeeming value beyond negative control over people.

Right on!
