Does this look to anyone else strangely familiar to the fictional technology of the recent movie Deja Vu?

I saw this the other day. That's going to take a hell of a lot of meta-tagging and DB work. Plus, if it's opened to public access like a real social network, it'll be useless within a week from fake tags on pr0n and such.

Still, it's got some really cool potential.

Gah. You're right. Farking spammers. I'll be looking at the Mona Lisa when suddenly a tag will pop up with "Hi! Like brunettes? How about oil? Mysterious smiles? Click here!" or somesuch.

Of course, like someone else said in one of the other threads about this, it'll be great for the actual porn industry.

Anyone else think the guy giving the demo sounded like the next version of Microsoft Sam? Not sure if it was the video or if he was just nervous.

It's not a microsoft acquisition.. they retroactively hired the people to do it. ;-)

I think the point is that they've taken an innovation in computer vision to allow the software to link images based on the the image data itself, without the need for meta tags, etc. Gumming up the works with pr0n spam won't be so easy. No doubt someone will find a way, but it will be something we haven't seen before.

The Photosynth technology preview runs only on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista.

If you feel you've reached this message in error, you can try anyway.

Oh joy! A social networking site that is Windows only.

I think you are missing the point. I believe he is trying to say that the software is awesome because Microsoft did not write it.

Photosynth IS a microsoft invention it was created in Live Labs.

Photosynth was born out of Microsoft's Live Labs, a group of scientists and engineers that are studying new ways to use the Internet. The group was founded in February 2006 by Dr. Gary Flake, who joined MSN as a distinguished engineer in April of last year.

"Microsoft Live Labs is very much focused on pushing the state of the art of the internet forward and showing what's possible today. We like to do things quickly and in a very collaborative way," the group says. "Over time you'll start to see more and more of our technologies work their way into great products across Microsoft, but in the meantime we want to get your feedback on what we're doing right, and areas where we can improve."

PhotoSynth can be downloaded from the Live Labs Web site.

Google became famous for software Google's founders created.

MS became famous for selling OTHER people's creations, and rinse repeating. Then they were disingenuousness enough to claim they innovate during their anti-trust hearings. When in fact the only thing MS has EVER innovated, is that fhking paper clip.

I have to say, while most of the time I'm fairly critical of MS products, this one looks fairly impressive. While I doubt it will at all "revolutionize" social picture networking(as it seems like you need an absurd amount of photos, as well as a reasonably steady camera hand), It is still a neat toy.

And for once I'm impressed they actually took into account the growing userbase of firefox users, and create a plugin for FF as well.

That work must have been done before the acquisition...

Actually, pretty much all of the recent MS web stuff is designed to be cross browser.

Actually guys, MS bought the company that made SeaDragon, and used SeaDragon to help create PhotoSynth.

Jeez, it's amazing how many of you have absolutely no clue as to what you just saw. In at least one of the demos (the cathedral) the images came off of Flickr, and were digitally recognized to be part of the same "feature". Even the poster was (incorrectly, you might say) recognized. Many of the photos are of varying quality - as he said, cell phone pics, DSLRs, etc. It has nothing to do with needing a "steady camera hand" or meta tagging, etc.

Actually, the idea of an animated helper was something they stole from someone else; I forget who. But Microsoft genuinely does innovate. Using the same example, they took a decent idea and innovated it to become annoying beyond all reason. They do this a lot.

That's got to count for something.
