I opposed the Iraq war from minute one, ditto for the Bush administration as a whole. I have to say, though, American cannot just leave Iraq. The country is radically unstable and is in a state of pseudo civil war. If the US leaves, the entire thing will collapse in on itself and things will be that much worse.

The war was unjustified, but it's the US (and Britain's) mess, and unfortunatley you guys are going to have to stay and clean it up.

\Best thing Chretien ever did was keep Canada out of Iraq
\\Still in a situation like in in Afghanistan, though
\\\At least there where terrorists there.

I_Make_Jebus_Cry: The terrorists on 9/11 did the same farkin' thing. What makes 9/11 any different than Pearl Harbor since it was innocent civilians that were killed?

Civilian targets vs military targets. Kinda different, if you think about it. Just kinda.

I_Make_Jebus_Cry:

History lesson: we justified the nukes on Japan with the 'it put a quicker end to the war' excuse, not 'because they deserved it'...

but, that's the facts people go by on the intarweb

The US fought WWII to stop a madman from destroying Europe and eventually the US and to defend ourselves from Japan.

In Iraq we've spent 3,500 lives and about 25,000 able bodies to:
- alienate our allies
- destroy our reputation in the world community
- swell the ranks of terrorist groups and give them a new safe haven
- promote nuclear proliferation
- probably replace a secular Arab state with one or more theocracies
- weaken our military
- help kill tens if not hundreds of thousands of Iraqis

There is a big difference.

Because that was a big mistake that nobody wants to see repeated?

So you think it was a mistake for the United States to avenge the attack on Pearl Harbor?

Because greed got in the way.

Posting so Paris's thread doesn't get more than this one.

I'm so depressed now. Y'all gotta bring up all the other wars!?! Like we could fix those.

We need to GTFO now.

Actually, they started construction on the foundation of the new building quite some time ago. There was disagreement over the facade and the design, but the foundation work has begun.

to be honest, I find this a little disturbing

Died of Self-Inflicted wounds
Army Navy Marines
Total
95 31 3 111

2007-06-07 09:09:52 PM
The number of deaths is irrelevant. 300,000 deaths in WWII was acceptable. 1 death for this Iraq thing is not. So the numbers become pretty meaningless.

2007-06-07 09:09:56 PM
It's only 1% of the number of active troops.

2007-06-07 09:10:04 PM
I_Make_Jebus_Cry: So you think it was a mistake for the United States to avenge the attack on Pearl Harbor?

Who said it was wrong for us to fight back after 9/11? Most people were fine with us invading Afghanistan. Iraq is a different story and nothing to with your WW2 comparison. What are you talking about?

2007-06-07 09:10:09 PM
Forgot to add that promoting the death of your leaders may not be beneficial to arguing a point.

Unless you aren't into democracy. If that's the case, then this country may not be for you.

Comparing the Iraq invasion to Pearl Harbor is just stupid.

If anything, given that the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor was also preemptive, the analogy works better if you say that we are the Japanese.

DEATH TOLL USA CIVIL WAR

The Price in Blood!
Casualties in the Civil War

At least 618,000 Americans died in the Civil War, and some experts say the toll reached 700,000.

All this to save a few Basketball Players Great-Grandsons
Go SPURS !!

Let me make this VERY simple for you since you obviously don't understand:

Japanese attacked U.S. soil killing thousands of soldiers. The entire country called for war. We go and invade Japanese land at the cost of tens of thousands of American lives, and end the war by dropping two nuclear bombs on hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese civilians to end the war quicker because it would save more American lives.

Basically, they attacked us, and we opened a GIGANTIC can of nuclear whoop-ass on the Japanese...and everyone's okay with this.

HOWEVER:

Members of a terrorist organization comes over and attacks U.S. soil and kills thousands of American CIVILIANS. The entire nation calls for war. We go over there and proceed to open a can of whoop-ass on them for killing civilians and attacking America...for defending ourselves against attack on our own soil...JUST like Pearl Harbor.

The difference is that a bunch of you pussies would prefer if we didn't respond to the attack at all.

The ONLY way Afghanistan differs from Japan is that we haven't dropped two nuclear bombs on them to bring a swift end to the war.

So...why do you agree with our ass-kicking of the Japanese, and NOT of the members of Al Qaeda?

2007-06-07 09:14:48 PM
I_Make_Jebus_Cry: 3,500 deaths in Iraq and everyone is saying we're losing too many soldiers. We lost 3,500 soldiers in the first few MINUTES at Normandy, and no one said a word about pulling the troops out.

see, now these are two different things. Like if I kick you in the nuts vs. punch you in the neck. Two very different things.

Whenever I read or hear about this kind of stuff I get a severe nausea that creeps up my chest. Probably because I know this is going to go on for years and the current death toll is probably a tiny fraction of what it will be by the time this is finally over.

/At least it was for a good cause though.
//Not sure what that cause is/was...

we should have concentrated on finishing the job in afghanistan. There will be a good deal of fighting there this summer, because we sent most of the resources to iraq.

I'm talking about Afghanistan. Iraq was, and still is..and always will be...a clusterfark that we should have NEVER gotten involved in.

Yeah, I think revenge IS a big mistake. It just makes things worse, and it serves no purpose other than to inflate your own ego and separate people. Even JESUS thinks we should just turn the other cheek, and I'm not Christian.

Yeah, so we should just allow attacks on our cities by foreign countries and terrorist and not do a farkin' thing about it...because we should give peace a chance.

I think you need to lay off the pot.

Glad to know they died oppressing a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. Glad to see positive results from good ol Republican logic. 3500 is not so bad, its actually good. Kind of like a 35% approval rating.

2007-06-07 09:23:41 PM
On the whole Pearl Harbor thing.....the sad part is that there was something that got "lost in translation" in one of the messages from the Japanese...or so one of my history teachers said. I can't remember exactly what it was, and Google's no help, bah.

Al Qaeda is not a nation. You cannot make war against a scattered group of individuals. You can arrest or kill individuals, but toppling governments only adds to fire. I would surmise that, had we poured the amount of money we've now spent on the war into our own investigative organizations (or, for god's sake, INTERPOL), we could've rounded up and arrested/killed a lot more terrorists with a lot less collateral damage. Work smarter, not harder?
Additionally, we've now destabilized a region that was finally calmed down for a while (except for that whole Jerusalem thing, which will never end). If things aren't handled very carefully, the whole thing could boil over, and we'll have a regional war in the single most important part of the world.

I'm pretty sure that no one here like the idea of Americans dying - suggesting so is just idiotic flamebaiting.

49th wedding anniversary, no big deal.
50th wedding anniversary, a very big deal.

And so it goes with benchmarks in any occasion. To bad this one is based on baloney reasons and people are dying for it.

THAT'S the part that pisses ME off. 3500 dead to kick Bin Laden's ass = not so bad.

3500 dead because of Iraq = bad.

Still....we lost more than that in the first few minutes of fighting at Normandy alone....and at Pearl Harbor as well.

YES...yes there is a correlation between the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and 9/11. If you dont see how or why, you are a moron.

You miss the point. How many have we suffered SINCE we (a) went in direct response to Afghanistan and (b) went on the offensive in Iraq?
