pimpwyld: I'm a Nintendo Nut, But i'll buy the PS3 when GTA4 comes out.

Because THAT is the killer-app that will bust Sony out of its rut. The game looks amazing.

It's coming out for the 360 also, so it is not going to be the game that makes the PS3 a "must buy."

It's being released on the 360 as well.

It stopped being about the games this generation. The PS3 is about it's hulking processors and Blu-Ray drive. The 360 is about HD video and it's online service. The Wii is about the controller.

Out of those three, I find the Wii to be the best. Even if it is about the controller, at least it's a new way to play games, not a better way to look at them.

Wow, capnmonkey...

It took you all of 10 minutes since the thread went to the main page to spew your fanboyism.

Knew I'd find you in here ranting and raving about how sucky the Wii is and/or how awesome the PS3 is.

B-b-b-b-b-b-but Blu-Ray!...

The verdict is in:

Inexpensive fun > expensive prettiness

The reason the Wii is selling so well is that it is bringing people who abandoned gaming back to it. I had not owned a system since regular Nintendo, mostly because I admittedly can't handle an assload of buttons, nor could I afford the increasingly expensive cost of the consoles. Once I saw the Wii, I was actually excited for a console for the first time in years. It's not "gimmicky", it's fun for people like me who aren't hardcore gamers.

Likewise, I'm sure the PS3 is probably superior in many ways, if you are a gamer. That doesn't mean that one console is lame while the other rules. One is just able to appeal to a broader audience.

Fark it, I'm going to quote myself for truth immediately:

I don't know about anywhere else, but in Canada in Southern Ontario, these things still sell out the day they come in. I just bought one this morning when there was 1 left after 15 minutes, and I biked for 25 minutes in a windstorm to get the damn thing...

Mini games and yet more Mario related games just aren't much fun unless you've had about 12 beers.

And herein lies the problem. Why has gaming become something to be taken so seriously? Maybe I'd rather have a console that I and my friends can have fun with after we've had a few.

My mom and stepdad bought a Wii for themselves. Before the Wii, I'm not sure either of them had ever touched a gaming console in their lives. They love it. You people who feel like you need to have a sense of superiority because a lot of people found a fun new toy need to get over it.

capnmonkey: Ok, can you email me when you decide the Earth is ready for next-gen games? PS2 game selection is starting to thin out.

Not to most people: it's still outselling the PS3. And the 360 for a while there.

AAA, expensive titles will find a home wherever. I think, right now, it'll be the 360. But until there's a system selling next-gen game (Halo 3?), the next gen really hasn't started yet.

It kinda sucks to see the PS3 strike out like this. I loved my PS1 and PS2 (I have an original launch unit, it just won't die, no problems). Great games for both. But I don't think I'm alone when I say that the last generation of console games had so many good titles I have yet to exhaust the library yet.

The PS3 is the only true next gen out-of-the-box system, but its overpriced, there arent a lot of games for it, and there are reports of shoddy components.

That's nothing new. It is a Playstation unit after all.

2007-06-05 02:51:55 PM
IAmRight: anyway, the PS3 doesn't do a whole lot more for me than my xbox360, which I've had for quite a while now. So why would I spend $600 bucks for what amounts to a tiny improvement?

IIRC, I was quoting you responding to someone who was talking about the lower quality graphics of the WII.

As far as the xbox vs ps3 thing goes, I agree. The PS3 may have the potential for better graphics, but they don't have the library or gameplay to show for it, yet, and maybe not ever.

What I really want to know is: Why can't I get Gottlieb Pinball Classics in the U.S.? Why is that? It's only available in the EU since December.

Why?

Why?

My stepson acts like a rat with a heroin-dispensing lever when it comes to videogames, so we don't own any consoles. I kind of wish we did, but I doubt I would have time to play, anyway.

I watched the Incredibles in 1080p last night on my PS3, and it looks great with the new upscaler in the PS3 firmware. Also, the ability to stream media from any node on your network is cool (though admittedly I can't see myself using it.)

The PS3 is a game system for movie fans.

PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and Wii owner here. 360 rules them all. Wii is okay, but needs to mature a little bit.

I will never own a PS3. Sony can suck it.

I remember getting in console war arguments. In Elementary school. When I was 12.

I love my Wii. I love the 360. Live's great. Never touched a PS3, but I'm sure that some very innovative developer is going to make great art on it, despite the stunningly low install base.

Can't we all just get along?

MisterRPG: If we use 7.0 as the dividing line for which a game should not be bothered with, 41% of Wii titles and 59% of PS3 games are worth playing. Examining the mode over both distributions, a Wii game is likely to be good whereas a PS3 game is likely to be great. ("Good" and "great" come from the scales the review site uses.)

Of course, by your own data, PS3 has only 49 total games, while the Wii has more than that above 7.0.

/and I'm betting that the PS3 games are also xbox 360 games I've had for months.

Shrugging Atlas: I walked into a BB several months back over lunch to pick up some blank DVDs and there were a bunch of Wiis sitting on the shelves.

WTF I've still yet to see a Wii in a store, no matter what time I go (not that I wake up early to go wait in the cold for one.

But if it doesn't, I don't think it's something that any game should celebrate because of what it will ultimately cost the hobby as a whole.

I disagree. I think that Microsoft has made great strides with their console with graphics, power, and online play. I don't think if Sony fails, it will cost the hobby anything (unless you're hobby is blue-ray media). I don't think that Sony itself will ultimately fail like Sega, but it doesn't look good for PS3 right now with things the way they are. Perhaps they'll have better luck with a PS3 minus the blue-ray or in PS4.

I'm not sure how the dreamcast is relevant.

More power than any of the other console on the market, but ultimately failed due to poor marketing. I would say it's somewhat relevant.

/you're post smells of snide grapes, btw.

The truth hurts.

capnmonkey: Now I like you. You're starting to sound like you think what I think, which is that so far all the next gen consoles are pretty mediocre.

I just mean your car analogy was perfect. Cars *are* overpriced. A smart competitor will come in and say: people don't need all this statusy bullshiat, they want smart design at a much lower price.

That's what I think Nintendo did this round. The gains for a consumer for the next gen are going to be slow in coming. This isn't the leap between SNES and PS1, where whole new genres are invented. The Wii focuses on something that actually improves the user experience while costing half of a PS3.

capnmonkey: MisterRPG
PFFFF, numbers?!?!? On a Wii-Rules thread?? HAHAHHA!
They don't want proof, compelling arguments, or balanced discussion.

He's using fuzzy math and you know it. Wii still has a much greater selection of games. Using MisterRPG's numbers, the Wii has a selection of 146 games, while the PS3 only has 49. When the difference is that great, the ratio becomes irrelevant in this case. When it comes to games that are rated 8.0 and above, the Wii's and PS3's games are neck-in-neck in terms of raw numbers. On GameRankings.com, Zelda TP is higher-rated than any other game on both platforms. It is still the most superior game compared to anything on the PS3. Very few people would disagree with that.

Let's not forget that Wii is riding on the back of just ONE game in past year: Wii Sports. Nintendo has yet to release any other big guns when in regards to sales on Wii. Don't you think WiiSports 2 is in the works, and will be just as huge? What about Brain Training Wii and Nintendogs Wii? Don't even get me started on Wii Health. That'll be farkin' massive. Who knows what other heavy-hitters they have in the works?

All three systems will continue to have fantastic games, but the war is over: the Wii has won. The PS3 can't rebound unless a miracle happens.

2007-06-05 02:56:17 PM
RyoShin - And the Gamecube, which was graphically superior to the PS2. The Wii, in terms of graphics, is akin to Gamecube 1.5, if you will. Once developers are able to really pick up the power of the system (I believe the largest improvement was that Nintendo removed a lot of the bottlenecks in the system), it will probably rival graphics for the original XBox.

I know what you're trying to say so I'm not knocking, but the Cube was able to keep up with the X-Box in many areas, beat it in some and was beaten by it in others.

F-Zero GX managed to throw some amazing things around, then does it in four player with no loss in speed or drop in framerate - the only loss is the rain is removed from the Lightning courses in four-player. Rogue Squadron 3:Rebel Strike (developed by Factor 5 who are currently working on Lair for the PS3) can go toe to toe with virtually every single XBox title and hold its head up high.

The Cube was a highly capable 480p machine. As Factor 5 have pointed out, the Wii is an absolute monster of a 480p machine but absolutely no-one has exploited its capabilities yet. And Factor 5 should know.

It isn't just an overclocked Cube, it's all the best design ideas of the Cube with a lot of nice little extras thrown in and some serious extra grunt as well as any bottlenecks in the design removed.

Once developers start bringing their A game and start developing properly for the Wii, then it won't produce games which look a bit better than XBox games - they'll look a lot better.

They obviously won't look as good as 360 or PS3 games running at 480p, but I think a lot of people will end up surprised at how close it gets against those consoles when they're running at 480p. Neither the 360 nor PS3 gain any benefit from dropping to 480p, they incur a lot of waste and even take some performance hits whereas the Wii is optimised for that resolution.

It's obviously never going to compare graphically to a 360 or PS3 at 720p or 1080p, but it isn't supposed to.

That will happen fairly quickly, too, since the architecture for the Wii is very similar to the Gamecube, so developers will have experience to go on.

It probably won't begin to happen until this Autumn when Metroid Prime: Corruption and Mario Galazy show up. It could even take third parties until early next year to start really delivering the goods in terms of high-quality, technically impressive Wii games.

Remember, the Wii caught most of the industry on the hop so that even those who actually had talented teams working on the Cube such as Capcom aren't fully in a position to exploit their knowledge and experience. And many developers never even bothered learning their way around the Cube.

As a result, they're all having to come up with ways to learn the architecture and learn the interface. Fast. Capcom illustrates just one possible approach with it's retooling of RE4. It allows them to expose a much larger pool of their developers to what damn good code for the architecture can do and it also gives them a wide enough timeframe to take a trusted product and really see how the Wiimote and Nunchuk functionality can replace traditional control schemes. By all accounts, it's been a brilliant success.

There are, of course, other possible approaches.

I find it funny (and odd) that people will buy a PS3 when GTA IV comes out when it's coming out at the exact same time on a console that is $200 cheaper and has better online play.

I have an Xbox 360 and a Wii. I haven't even entertained the thought of buying a PS3.

Sony screwed up royally.

Sony is part of the RIAA coalition that sues its customers. They're also the company that put rootkits onto your music CDs. They're the ones that force their customers to buy proprietary accessories like memory sticks for triple the price of any other format. And they tried to foist ATRAC on the market when everyone else was using MP3s.

Why the hell would I want to buy anythinbg this company makes?

The Wii has provided my family with loads of bang for your buck fun. Me, the wife, the kid, it provides stuff we can all play together, laughing and having a good time and acting like fools. Whenever we have company, the Wii is a hit. People can't get enough of it. ALWAYS a good time.

I never said Nintendo wasn't smart. I never said they didn't tap into a buttload of cash and that it was not brilliantly done. I think they are fully within their rights to do everything they've done as a company.

But I don't have to be happy about one of my favorite hobbies, gaming, potentially getting set back 5-10 years in graphical quality due to the Wii. And yes, graphics make a difference. If I wanted good gameplay without regard to graphics I'd still be playing FF6 over and over again.

Quick1

The Gamecube was much more powerful then the PS2, which is why they had to scale down RE4 (graphically)to make it play. The Wii is more then twice as powerful as the Cube. The reason why people keep comparing the two systems is that lazy game makers keep porting over Ps2 titles to the Wii instead of making new games or redesigning from ground up. This is also why Ubisoft just made a public apology about proting games to Wii.

the actual power is (so Nintendo claims) is a little more powerful then the original x-box. While not a great leap they don't need as much graphical output as there is no HD support which is why the console is so cheap. (take of that what you will.)

As far as I'm concerned it's just damned fun. Aside from Guitar hero 2, I haven't touched my 360 in months. There's been nothing out there that I want to play... at least until Too Human.

2007-06-05 03:02:38 PM
Wii is yawn to me. Yeah it kinda provides a novelty fun kinda feeling when I'm over at my buddies playing it. But it gets old reasonably fast. After a couple weeks of going over to his place and playing it I got bored of it. I don't think I'll ever buy one unless some super killer game comes out that really takes advantage of the controls and is super innovative and fun with a lot of reply value (haven't seem this yet). I really like online competition, so if there is some Wii game that generates a lot of online interest, I may get one (haven't seen this yet either).

Not that it needs to be said again but..the reason I don't own a PS3 is because of the price. GT4 is not enough to make me pay that much. Decrease the price or I won't buy it. I've played Resistance Fall of Man at a friends and I loved that game even though it is a rip off of Halo (10x more longer lasting fun that any Wii game I've played).

I don't own a 360 just because I'm a cheap bastard. But I am really close to buying one. I will buy one without a doubt before Halo 3 comes out.

That's where I stand.
