As a Sony/Microsoft fan boy, I must say Nintendo is dying!

Will someone please listen to me!

Oh, man. NICE headline.

Definitely worthy of a hat-tipping and +1.

And Clifton? Grow up. It's possible to enjoy multiple consoles. You call yourself a fan boy, and then immediately state that fanboys suck. You should heed your own advice.

Sony claims the PS3 can do more than just play games but the 360 does more and the online features are way better. The wii suffers from horrible online capabilities but with metroid and Smash Brothers will be well worth the purchase. The PS3 is over priced and has no real answer to xbox live other than, "but but our online service is free." Sure it's free, it also sucks.

I'm not a fanboy I will soon own all three, and have used all three. This is just my opinion so make your purchases according to personal taste.

2007-06-05 09:53:52 AM
Well said, Egoy. I own a Wii and a 360, and will most probably own a PS3 in a year or two. As Tycho at Penny Arcade once said (and I'm paraphrasing, so forgive me), I love gaming, so I cannot abide having some subset of games unavailable to me.

2007-06-05 09:54:32 AM
AHAHAHA!!

My husband works in the video game industry and PS3 is farking it all up. Many can't buy because they have millions of dollars worth of PS3 that just is not moving.

I work for EB Games, and I'm really getting a kick out of these replies...

But seriously, I've sold maybe 5 PS3's in the last month. I've sold all 12 Wii's within an hour of receiving them. There is no compelling reason yet to purchase the system. There's no killer app title. Free online service is worth exactly what you pay for it.

360 and Wii both rock

2007-06-05 10:34:17 AM
I love that each and every time Sony tries to pull some proprietary dick move they get spanked for it. And yet they never learn. Good products sell and make you money - trying to force your customers into an expensive format war does not.

2007-06-05 10:37:53 AM
I'm rocking the Wii60.

Mario Party when friends come over, various online games when they're not - wanna get Shadowrun once I decide I have the money.

The only thing I feel I'm missing is MLB 07 on the PS3. I hear it's the best baseball game. Ah well, one or two games aren't worth $600.

BTW, GameStop is trying so hard to sell PS3's that you get a free controller with the purchase, and you get like $100 for a PS2 trade-in towards a PS3.

Either way, I'm way too busy playing LOTR Online to bother with any console.

2007-06-05 10:41:04 AM
I have all three consoles, and the PS3 is played the least. And when we do play it, we're playing PS2 games.

The PS3 console itself is great. Plays DVDs very well (better quality than the 360), and Blu-Ray movies looks great now that I can see them in 720p.

They just need a 'must have' PS3 game that isn't already available on the 360.

2007-06-05 10:51:35 AM
I've never played the Mario Party games before, and it's fun to play when friends and such come over. However, I'm really looking forward to Mario Strikers. It still has the friends code BS, but it should still be fun with the ranked system. It will be nice to finally have an online game for the Wii, and there are a couple of videos on Youtube that make it look like a pretty fun game.

The PS3 is the only true next gen out-of-the-box system, but its overpriced, there arent a lot of games for it, and there are reports of shoddy components.

The Wii is a gimmicky game with bad graphics. But women love it.

The 360 has the games, but lacks true HD support*

Pretty much nothing out there that I feel I need to spend money on.

dedekind_cut: The Wii is a gimmicky game

I didn't know the Wii was a game. All the games released so far for it have been Gamecube ports. The Wii ultimately has a bit better graphics power than the PS2, we just won't see it for a while yet.

This is my thought. The Wii is just an internet based fad. The other two won't be worth it until later when they have large numbers of games and the prices drop a fair amount.

2007-06-05 11:03:33 AM
Seven months and I still can't find a Wii in stores around here.

So much for being gimmick and an Internet fad.

clifton: So much for being gimmick and an Internet fad.

Being a gimmick has nothing to do with availability. I wouldnt go so far as to say its a fad, but does swinging a sword with your hand instead of hitting the X or A button make it a better game? No, I would think good game design does that.

Quick1: The Wii ultimately has a bit better graphics power than the PS2

And the PS2 was released in 1999, so Nintendo is setting the bar really high there.

I stand corrected by wikipedia, October 2000 in the United States.

2007-06-05 11:11:11 AM
Awesome headline. I'll eventually get both, assuming they each have a decent catalog of games and the PS3 comes down to a reasonable price. No hurry right now since neither has that many decent games. We should see some great games on both systems by end-of-year.

To you (and me, for what it's worth) maybe. But not to the millions of Wii owners. Feelings on all types of entertainment are purely subjective.

Face it. The Wii is a hit and lots of people are liking it. This isn't some grand conspiracy to piss off the likes of you and 7of7. T

he "Ninendo is dying" camp continues to amuse me year after year.

That's your opinion of course, we all like different things. But considering all the reports about how nicely the Wii is selling, especially in comparison with the PS3 which is supposed to be the "ultimate" in machine/graphics power and fun games, it seems that "swinging a sword with your hand" really does make it a better game.

2007-06-05 11:18:17 AM
dedekind_cut: And the PS2 was released in 1999, so Nintendo is setting the bar really high there.

The point wasn't to release it with top of the line graphics, though. Otherwise, the system would sell for as much as a 360. The whole objective was to make it available to people who don't usually play games, and to get them to play the system. I think that you can call it successful in that regard so far.

My point with my earlier graphics post is that yes, the graphics in some of the games have been laughably bad, but it's also a product of the games being gamecube ports, and some of them being fairly cartoon-y. Call of Duty 3, while it didn't look as good as it did on a 360, still looked pretty good on the Wii.

Headline is +1.

dedekind_cut: The PS3 is the only true next gen out-of-the-box system, but its overpriced, there arent a lot of games for it, and there are reports of shoddy components.

The funny thing is that since Nintendo entered the video game arena, it has been proven time and again that superior technology does not sell. Game Gear, Phillips CD-i, Dreamcast, and much more have been technologically superior at the time but ultimately failed.

Sony even understood this at one time. I believe the PS1 was actually technologically inferior to the N64, and we know how well that era worked out. Once again, the Gamecube was superior to the PS2, and the PS2 well outsold it (having a year head start helped, though).

The mainstream populace does not want next gen. They just want "better", as long as it's also fun and cheap. Hence why the Wii is selling so fast.

Quick1: All the games released so far for it have been Gamecube ports.

lolwut

Red Steel, Elebits, Farcry: Vengence, that Wario Ware game... I can probably snag a list from somewhere, but I don't believe even the majority have been Gamecube ports.

The Wii ultimately has a bit better graphics power than the PS2,

And the Gamecube, which was graphically superior to the PS2. The Wii, in terms of graphics, is akin to Gamecube 1.5, if you will. Once developers are able to really pick up the power of the system (I believe the largest improvement was that Nintendo removed a lot of the bottlenecks in the system), it will probably rival graphics for the original XBox. That will happen fairly quickly, too, since the architecture for the Wii is very similar to the Gamecube, so developers will have experience to go on.

Probably doesn't mean much in this day and age, but I love my Wii games, and so far the lower-quality graphics haven't done anything to hamper my enjoyment.

/Flame on!

While I agree with your assessment that of course the Kia will outsell the Ferrari, I think you have the specs reversed on which are the more powerful machines. Also keep in mind that processing power does a lot more than graphics. Once you get into games with advanced AI or physics (like SW: Force Unleashed), you're simply not going to be able to make them for the Wii or you're going to have a severely stripped-down version.

RyoShin: Red Steel, Elebits, Farcry: Vengence, that Wario Ware game... I can probably snag a list from somewhere, but I don't believe even the majority have been Gamecube ports.

What I should have said was "originally developed for the Gamecube". Most of the games that have been released so far, at least from what I recall, were originally planned and developed for the Gamecube. Yes, even Zelda.

Probably doesn't mean much in this day and age, but I love my Wii games, and so far the lower-quality graphics haven't done anything to hamper my enjoyment.

I'll agree. I'm pretty pumped over Strikers, and all the European reviews have given it at least an 8/10. Although I don't know why we have to wait two months...

clifton: The Wii is a hit and lots of people are liking it

The Wii is a hit for people who fancy themselves purveyors of the "underdog" and people who fall for internet hype. Mini games and yet more Mario related games just aren't much fun unless you've had about 12 beers. What really gets me is how many Wii users denigrate the other consoles with sort of an arrogant and insufferable attitude. You like some console. We get it. There's no need to write some asshole comment followed by Wiiiiiiii every time the other consoles are mentioned.

/yes I know that's precisely what you're thinking of doing right now. Good job sparky.

That's true. I know that the Wii has less processing power than the 360/PS3, though I'm not certain if that gap is as large as the graphics one.

There's also the thought that the Wii might force companies to optimize AI for use on the Wii instead of cutting out stuff. The Wii is cheaper to develop for than the other two consoles (graphics take up a large portion of game budgets, IIRC), and with an installed base like it has now a lot of companies seem to be getting on the bandwagon.

I am hoping that Nintendo puts more power into the next console, though.

2007-06-05 11:45:34 AM
Quick1: Most of the games that have been released so far, at least from what I recall, were originally planned and developed for the Gamecube. Yes, even Zelda.

There were a few projects that either cross-developed for 'Cube and Wii (like Zelda) or just jumped completely (like Super Paper Mario), but I doubt that's the majority. Games that were originally being planned for one system then moved to another aren't ports, either- if that were the case, Final Fantasy 6 for the PS1 is a port of the N64 version (for which it was originally planned)

Although I don't know why we have to wait two months...

Corporations haet Europe.

Yup, and you're just as bad, 7of7, jumping into just about every Wii thread and being sure to spout your opinion that it's an internet fad. Not that you have proof.

HulkHands,

Is LOTR the same type of timesink as WOW?

Or, have they finally made an online game where you can progress just as well playing by yourself and not putting in 80 hours a week?

HulkHands: I think there were only two: Zelda and Super Paper Mario.

Maybe I'm way off base here then. I guess I thought that a good majority of the early releases were originally made for Gamecube, and then had Wii functionality tacked on later.

I think you have the specs reversed on which are the more powerful machines.

I could be wrong, but I thought the N64 was 'faster' than the PSX:

N64 had a more 3D-capable graphics board and the cartridge design gave it nonexistant load times and some decent bandwidth.

PSX had a CD drive. That gave developers more room to do a lot more things with (FF7 baby, FF7)

As I said, I could be wrong here and wouldn't mind learning more about the two.

2007-06-05 12:03:34 PM
7of7 The Wii is a hit for people who fancy themselves purveyors of the "underdog" and people who fall for internet hype.

Really? Is that all it is? I mean, I could totally understand how people would view Nintendo, farking Nintendo, which has been a strong gaming company longer than I've been alive, as the underdog. Just because Microsoft and Sony are also coming out with their own strong gaming systems. Internet hype? The only hype I remember about the Wii before it came out was everyone mocking the name and seemingly unworkable concept, decrying the failure of Nintendo. And then people actually started playing it and now people on and off the internet can't stop chattering about how much fun it is and how they can't find one for the life of them. Yeah, underdog. Right.

2007-06-05 12:04:26 PM
I would buy a Wii if I could FIND one!

Ghastly,

Dude, just call Target and ask them when their next delivery is. Show up that morning, and you'll get one.

My mom did that two weeks before Christmas and got one for my little brother.
