I know gas is high as hell, but there's no way I'd wait in line for half and hour or so to save a few bucks. Fark that.

The reaction of the American public to gas pricing is the single most powerful argument against "consumers are rational" in the history of economics.

Tigger,

I'd say that Furbees were a better example.

In their prime, I saw an ad in a Trading Post paper:

"Willing to trade Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition for (some color I can't recall) Furbee"

This was a few weeks before Christmas when Furbees couldn't be found anywhere.

Trading an SUV for a Furbee.

Paid $2.88/gal this morning.

Tigger: The reaction of the American public to gas pricing is the single most powerful argument against "consumers are rational" in the history of economics.

There's two different kinds of "rational" - the kind which thinks and considers all options and possibilities carefully, and the kind which single-mindedly and instinctively determines and pursues self-interest. This is the latter.

Sometimes you see the two kinds together, but it is rare.

Noticed on the way in today that gas is 2 cents cheaper today than yesterday at the place I go to... I wonder what it'll be when I actually need it.

Ok people are waiting around for enough time that its causing traffic jams to save, maybe 2 bucks and change if they were completly filling their tank?

They should all be shot for not having something better to do with their time, and for being cheap.

2007-05-30 01:44:20 PM
Spending $6.00 in gas to save $4.00 is brilliant. I bet the same tools buy that third pair of shoes at 50% off to 'save' money as well.

I do not complain about gas prices as I set up my life to limit the need to purchase it.

My car runs on self-hubris.

I love my state. 2nd highest gas prices in the nation, and almost at the bottom of all 50 for job growth. Anyone wanna guess what state I'm in?

2007-05-30 01:50:47 PM
I thought the gas staions had 'razor thin' margins on gas? Even if they have a 7-10% margin, this is way too cheap at 25% off the norm.
How do they do it?

2007-05-30 01:51:00 PM
A quarter per gallon adds up to about $3 on a tank for a sane vehicle. That's a nice savings. I'd wait about 5 minutes maximum to save $3, personally.

A few years ago, when gas first really started rising, I was driving along and saw a station with $1.29.
I made some really rediculous manuevers across 3 lanes of traffic to get to it.
Only to find out it was closed - had been for quite some time.

/yes, felt like a total dork
//am still pretty much a dork

2007-05-30 02:05:09 PM
if i had $2.75/gal gas within 10 miles of me, i'd wait in line 10 minutes. it would save me nearly $5.00 per filled tank.

my wife an i used to commute together, but our schedules are off - we work 2 blocks from each other and 20 miles from home. sucks to waste the full because i can't tele-commute an hour each day.

Hmmm...how to get around rising fuel costs...oh wait, move out of the sticks and try the subway. Way faster, and never boring. Oh, and $76/month unlimited.

leegalizit: I'm gonna take a stab and say... Alaska?

Don't they have a bunch of oil fields, refineries, pipelines, and other infrastructure there? I'd imagine that gasoline wouldn't be that bad, but that's just speculating.

terminally challenged: 3.12 for unleaded in Phoenix.

It's about $2.99-$3.06 for unleaded in Tucson, depending on where in town you get it.

Stopped all recreational driving and boating.

That's not fun.

Goes to store, goes to work, watches TV. No vacation.

My life is over until I can afford to go anywhere.

Ah, I just got done with an 1,800 mile road trip to San Francisco and back. Total gas prices were about $200. Still cheaper than flying on most airlines, I don't get treated like a criminal (except for that pesky speeding ticket) for wanting to get transport, and I get to enjoy the scenery and eat whatever damned food I want.

I don't drive much, but I do enjoy driving and don't let gas prices get me down. Still much more economical (both in terms of money and time) compared to any alternatives like buses here in Tucson (sure, they go where I want, but take 75 minutes to get me there when I could get there by car in about 14 minutes if the lights cooperate).

That had crossed my mind, but everything else there is rediculously expensive so I figured gas would be as well. I was only guessing though.

When I filled up yesterday in Michigan, it was 3.49 a gallon, and its been up to 3.60 recently. I just went out on a trip to NY state and gas out there is about 3.09 a gallon or cheaper, and apparently its even cheaper in the eastern us, my brother is in Maryland and he was saying they saw it for under $3 recently. Wish that would spread here.

2007-05-30 02:39:25 PM
I think it's $2.89 here in Memphis. And I'm in sales, so driving is a necessity, not an option.

Plus, how would I get my beer without a car?

regular unleaded is $3.09 - $3.14

hey pete

I had a teacher years ago who said that he paid the most for heating oil when he lived in Texas (I, of course, lacked the presence of mind to ask why he bought heating oil so much in Texas) and claimed that it had to do with the inability of the feds to regulate due to the fact it was extracted, refined, and shipped entirely through intrastate commerce. While that seems a bit dubious, if it holds up, then Alaskans could be paying a tidy some for oil based products too.

2007-05-30 03:07:20 PM
Haha. I live two miles from there. Sadly, I filled up yesterday at $2.95 a gallon at Irving, because I didn't feel like taking my life in my hands.

By contrast, the most expensive gas in the state, $3.29 per gallon, can be found at the Shell station on Totten Pond Road in Waltham, according to the gas price Web site. Traffic in that area, however, was not a problem at all.

AHAHAHahahaha... christ I remember seeing those auctions too... from $100 to $1500 bucks in 5 minutes, and sometimes higher. It was absolutely ridiculous watching people bid. I still maintain that people are just plain stupid.

3.39 for the cheap stuff yesterday. I can't bring myself to buy more than half a tank. I keep hoping premium will come back down so I can fill 'er up.

My K&N air intake has helped though. I get about 30 miles more per tank.
