In movies.

Because that's as real as it gets.

2007-05-28 08:21:21 PM
We're a work in progress.

2007-05-28 08:28:24 PM
They describe that scene from a movie as if it's real and proves a point. Ridiculous.

2007-05-28 08:28:59 PM
Ah the open testing level. That's one step closer to a full release.

I remember when we went from Alda in MASH to Stallone in Rambo--during the Ray-gun era.

Guess the pendulum has swung.

Perhaps Freaks and Geeks would have survived if it premiered this year.

You mean there was a time when getting Heigl pregnant wasn't popular??

e-male?

Why hello there, beta male, do you mind if I dance with your date? No? Great.

2007-05-28 11:00:03 PM
There's a whole media genre about average-looking guys scoring with hot chicks. Movies, comic books, Tijuana Bibles, what have you. This is more wishful thinking on the author's part than actual social trend.

Beta male reporting in.

so far, still striking out as often as ever.

*sigh*

Of course he is. Monty Brown is now going by Marcus Cor Von.

I'm fascinated to see what's going to happen to the US in 20-30 years. A higher percentage of women than men in college, boys discouraged from learning, technology basically making muscle work obsolete. We're in the middle of a major sea change in society. That's what's causing backlashes like the Promise Keepers. Men feel like their role is being co-opted and they are becoming obsolete.

Is it too late to nominate the poorest written piece of crap of the year? Because I think the Starkville Daily News just got knocked out of the running.

Newsweek and resorted to publishing "Geek Fantasy" articles to get readers. Now that is funny.

Be assured if Colin Ferrel had walked in the boys would have gone home alone. Be very very assured.

2007-05-29 12:53:01 AM
Guess which one is going to get more chicks?

2007-05-29 12:53:04 AM
Oh, and as usual, the baby boomers are to blame for a trend away from alpha male heroes. In the 80's, boomers identified with the macho hero, they saw themselves in the hero role. Now an aggressive young hero just makes them feel old...

2007-05-29 12:56:03 AM
Hey, did you guys hear about this new thing they're doing in movies now where the main character is an underdog who somehow overcomes adversity? What'll they think of next?

2007-05-29 12:56:26 AM
While you're busy thinking you're the "new thing" go get me a beer before I put a foot up your ass.

Masterbeta Male is about the size of it.

2007-05-29 12:57:15 AM
I don't think the writers of that article quite understand the concept of the alpha male. Pack hierarchy doesn't translate quite properly to humans, but hell. If a nerd's getting all the chicks while the jock is doing the biatch work, the nerd is the alpha male while the jock is the beta. If the jock is getting all the chicks and the nerd is doing his homework, then the jock is the alpha and the nerd is the beta.

Since the latter is more likely to happen (assertive nerds aren't in great supply) people tend to think of jocks as alphas. It's just whoever's dominant, really.

No, but when women take over the economy and rule the world, there will still be a place for men in the world. Sexy men with low body fat indices and nice pecs who can raise our children for us in exchange for sexual favors.

From TFA It makes sense that our culture is embracing the mojo-free man right now.

Fark.

Did they fail to catch their prey and are now demoted?

It makes sense that our culture is embracing the mojo-free man right now. As America comes to terms with our diminished omnipotence in the wake of 9/11, the Iraq War and President Bush's international unpopularity, we're growing weary of Teflon-coated John Wayne stereotypes of masculinity. Donald Rumsfeld, Ken Lay, Mel Gibson, Don Imus-all chest-beating, leader-of-the-pack men, and look what happened to them. The alpha dog doesn't hunt anymore. The new role model is a beta male.

My great uncle was an senior editor at Newsweek for 30+ years. He was a WWII vet , 101 airborne, stormed the beaches on D-Day. He would in his last years, for the first time openly talk about the horrors he saw in the war, but absolutely refused to talk about his career at Newsweek, even though myself, and his grandson were both trying to enter the journalism/photography field.

The magazine is obviously utterly gutted and totally trashed, and has no future.

2007-05-29 01:04:37 AM
To be quite honest, I prefer beta males over the alphas. They're usually more fun anyway.

I came in here to make the wrestling reference. At least now no one's going to have to feel THA POUNCE!!!

there's this whole school of thought that says if you're a naturally forceful, dominant type of person you act that way, and if you're naturally easygoing and self-effacing you go with it. And you might attract women who fall for those respoective qualities.

Crazy talk, I know.

Instead of a movie about a 40-year-old virgin, Judd Apatow should do a movie about a 40-year-old married guy with two kids who is a CEO. It could be about him going to meetings and stuff.

nice ad for a movie. can I have my minute and a half back?

2007-05-29 01:10:33 AM
If we're going to go with the definition that jocks = alpha male, nerds = beta male.

Using the above definition, maybe the girls just dig the beta males because they have a higher probability of being better paid than the alpha males.

nature dictates that females should go for the males that can support them and a child the most.

The only reason Jim from The Office is so great is because

1) he's good looking and doesn't have a funk like Dwight is likely to
2) he doesn't force the way he undermines the authority of others. It's very subtle, almost like he's using some ancient Kung-Fu to flow the energy back onto his opponents.
