Good headline :-p
2007-05-28 01:11:35 PM
I wonder if the scientists would have reached the same conclusions if they included firefighters in Gilbert, Arizona in their study.
2007-05-28 01:18:10 PM
TFA: Neuroscientists Jorge Moll and Jordan Grafman of the National Institutes of Health say experiments they conducted have led them to conclude unselfishness is not a matter of morality, The Washington Post reports.

Rather, the two say altruism is something that makes people feel good, lighting up a primitive part of the human brain that usually responds to food or sex.

I was going to say something nice about scientists, but I think I will have lunch instead.
2007-05-28 01:33:54 PM
+1 for the headline. Good luck.
2007-05-28 01:40:47 PM
ditto for the headline. Good one

I'm referring to this little gem on the main:

I think we are also hardwired to be pranksters and dicks, so enjoy your 2 minute greenlight!

And it's may I have...
2007-05-28 02:25:02 PM
A study by government scientists in Washington indicates humans are hard-wired to be unselfish.

yeah, like i trust government scientists. this is just another ploy to get you to give money to the undeserving
2007-05-28 02:34:52 PM
I'll be damned. Usually, begging for a greenlight is grounds for an insta-red.
2007-05-28 03:02:26 PM
Well, it -is- a holiday, and what with all the mods probably being drunk and stuff....

torch : Well, it -is- a holiday, and what with all the mods probably being drunk and stuff....

Speaking of which, I just ran out of tequila.

/ time to go mow the lawn, obviously

The results are showing many aspects of morality appear to be hard-wired in the brain, opening up a new window on what it means to be good.

I thought you could only be moral if you were beaten with a religion stick from a very young age.
2007-05-28 03:56:57 PM
Giving feels like sex, eh? I could use a pick me up. Who wants a free month of TFark? (one and only one 'liter plz)
2007-05-28 03:57:00 PM
I really hate those generous people - just giving stuff away so they can light up the primitive parts of their brain. Always thinking of themselves.
2007-05-28 03:57:51 PM
so, they did an experiment on people who generously volunteered their time to see if these people were generous?

next study... asking people coming off roller-coasters if they like the rush they feel on amusement park rides.
2007-05-28 03:58:30 PM
No, the study shows that people who volunteered to do it for free feel good when they do good for free.

Try it in a prison, then show me the results.
2007-05-28 03:59:52 PM
Social behavior has a biological basis? Who'd have thought it.
2007-05-28 04:00:07 PM
But what about Ayn Rand?
2007-05-28 04:01:14 PM

Still no cure for cancer, though...

/got nuthin'
2007-05-28 04:01:37 PM
This kind of research is dangerous, in reinforcing the concept of a universal moral code.

Which of course is a mythical creation, like a unicorn or the female orgasm.
2007-05-28 04:02:17 PM
I don't buy it. My personal research indicates that 99.9% of all people are total farking asshats.

Send me $9.95 to subscribe to my newsletter, you farking asshats.

So does that mean that libertarians and fascists aren't human?

/or the rest of the right wing?
//Are communists primitive then?
///Do I have to be rational and centrist now?
2007-05-28 04:03:45 PM
no worries digital_Angel, you worded it better. i should have said "if being generous makes them feel good".

/ i'll give you the win this time
// man i feel good

They should meet some people that I know... they would completely void these claims.
2007-05-28 04:10:41 PM
Humans are SOCIAL creatures. Therefore, anything to help the group helps YOUR genes get passed on. Evolutionally (if that's even a word), it makes perfect sense.

So, yeah.

damnit, serves me right for not using the preview
2007-05-28 04:13:57 PM
I wonder if this explains why people still give money to bums when they know damn well and good that they are going to buy booze with it.
2007-05-28 04:18:49 PM

What does Girl Hitler have to do with this story?
2007-05-28 04:19:00 PM

Kinda obscure to link to that story, but your name kicks ass so it's all good :)

fragMasterFlash I wonder if this explains why people still give money to bums when they know damn well and good that they are going to buy booze with it.

i prefer my homeless people slightly intoxicated. they are more entertaining and less likely to "challenges my unstabbed status".
2007-05-28 04:22:50 PM
Liberal science lie. Jesus makes us generous.
2007-05-28 04:24:34 PM

Plus, they're more likely to stumble into traffic!

This book offers some interesting explanations for the genetic origins of altruism. (It's also a great book.)

/written long before Dawkins shagged Mr. Garrison on South Park
2007-05-28 04:28:26 PM
In other news, government scientists get their money from government grants, which come from people "generously giving" taxes OR private donations. Subliminal messaging? Methinks there may be a connection...
2007-05-28 04:33:30 PM
Chabash: But what about Ayn Rand?

Man's highest moral purpose is his own happiness.
/Suck it people!
2007-05-28 04:34:19 PM
So lets!
2007-05-28 04:34:25 PM

God will surely smite you down for recommending that heathen, blasphemous rag to the masses!

/'tis an excellent book, I own a copy
2007-05-28 04:36:20 PM
I'm glad somebody already pointed out that the volunteers feel good when they're being generous.
2007-05-28 04:38:09 PM
No takers on the free TFark? Unfarkingbelievable...
