No! No! Do you know how much IT work will be required worldwide to alter how zip code validation is done? There are thousands upon thousands of products that validate zip codes as "\d{5}(-\d{4})?". Changing that to "\d{5}(-[A-Z0-9]{5})?" will require money, rewriting test cases, verifying, testing... please God, no!

The time zone shiat was bad enough!

End Bulk Mail
http://www.halfbakery.com/idea/End_20Bulk_20Mail
Ever increasing postal rates are used to subsidize bulk (junk) mail. To reduce the volume of junk mail, and the waste it causes, abolish the bulk mailing discount and charge the same rate applied to first class mail. This would have a number of beneficial effects from reducing the cost of postage to eliminating a tremendous source of pollution.

A special exemption fee for certified non-profit organizations would allow them to send mail at a discount. This would preserve the financial integrity of community organization and others that use mass mailing in a responsible fashion.

This exemption would not apply to politicians, who regularly use taxpayer funded mail to send thinly disguised campaign flyers. My local representatives send out pictures of themselves at least once a week, attached to some bullshiat 'newsletter' touting their latest legislative coup. Politicians will be required to personally pay full rate for all mail sent to constituents.

Wow..without vanity zip codes, what would people use to distinguish themselves from everyone else besides their names and addresses?

Ceph: "\d{5}(-[A-Z0-9]{5})?"

"\d{5}(-[A-Z0-9]{4})?"

FTFY. Though I hadn't yet RTFA, so I thought they were allowing up to 5 letters, so I ended up with:
"\d{5}(-([A-Z]{5}|[0-9]{4}))?" though I think it can be simplified...

Oh yea, because the twits in the USPS don't already fark up enough. I had an overnight package sent via USPS take a week to get to me. And I only got useful help in tracking it after I tried to file a lost claim on it...

What a font of stupid ideas! How about getting MY mail to MY mailbox, instead of to my neighbors' boxes, at more or less the same time every day, and when you have that down, and aren't opening all my NETFLIX disks before I get them a few days late...then and only then consider mucking around with ZIP codes?

2007-05-27 01:07:58 PM
Raines8416, yes. The +4 really aren't for residential use. They are part of the standards that let businesses send mail cheaper than residential mail in exchange for doing part of the USPS's work: zip code +4, verified address, routing barcode, and ensuring that the letter can be 100% processed by the automatic routing system.

Part of the postage you pay to send a letter is a surcharge because residential mail requires far more manual handling than business mail (on average).

I'm watching this thread for an answer to this question. I've never used one and have no idea when someone is sopposed to. I fail to see any practicality to this at all.

This makes sence, but wouldn't the purpose of vanity zip codes be so customers could remember them? What the point of getting one of these if your customers will never use it?

2007-05-27 01:22:41 PM
$8 and a candy bar? I think not. You can rent that one for $5 a month.

2007-05-27 01:29:27 PM
NickelP, I'd wager it's more for business use again. Microsoft, for instance, would probably pay a pretty penny to have their zip code show up as "55674-MSFT".

I was under the impression that the extra four numbers were box numbers at the post office, to help the postal workers sort it a little quicker. I can't provide any linky-evidence to this, though.

A ZIP + 4 code uses the basic five-digit code plus an additional four digits to identify a geographic segment within the five-digit delivery area, such as a city block, a group of apartments, an individual high-volume receiver of mail or any other unit that could use an extra identifier to aid in efficient mail sorting and delivery.

Fark those four extra digits.

Hell, once in a while I don't even put a zip code at all. The address should be enough. Maybe it will take an extra day or two, but who cares (if I'm sending something via snail mail then I'm obviously not all that concerned about time).

The only thing it does for me is make me wonder if I'm going to get my package or mail when I can't remember those 4 numbers and leave that spot blank.

You'll get your mail fine even without a zip code most of the time. You can even replace your city and state with just the zip code. The +4 is more for business use, as it reduces sorting time and cost, and is generally a pre-requisite for using the bulk postage classes. Residential or first-class postage don't require +4.

In Canada, the zip code puts the letter into an exact grouping of mail. The format has both letters and numbers, 6 digits. Sometimes different sides of the same street have different codes. Presumably because a different letter carrier could conceivably have the other side I guess.

They also don't subscribe to this whole bullshiat notion of having a bunch of different numerations of stamps with differnt values on them. They just sell stamps and when the rate changes the old stamps are still good. I stood in line behind a guy at the post the other day for 10 minutes. He purchased a packages of 1c stamps (22c). Waste of my time. Waste of the tellers time. Waste of his time.

Anybody remember the "$8 and a Candy Bar" story?

Subby's going way back for that one.

Something about police arresting a hooker who was paid $8 and a candy bar.

I can't believe nobody's said anything about it.

/100 Grand?
