You folks have pointed out a lot of movies I had completely forgotten about!

The nerd in me admits to seeing all of them...I suck, but,
so do you.

But admittedly, sci-fi has gone downhill as of late. Stargate was a last hope after Babylon 5 and Farscape. Most of it is drek, including some of the above, but it's better than nothing.

Well, in another 30 years...

Uterus? You don't mean The Flying Space Scrotum?

oregoncat: Check, and melt!

Hmm, the usual photo-editing not up to par? Cuz in my mind, she looks a lot more like the photos in Stuff Magazine (pops, and several photos show - OMG cleavage - which has been deemed unsuitable for New Fark) or Playboy (nudie, and you know where it is).

/Reminds me: who knew Xena was actually hot, you know, back then

Thanks for that site!
Gave me new ammo for my usual Trek/Voyage debate

Which of course now proves that Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was better than Star Trek

Star Wars is the best movie of all time... if you are a 10 year old boy.

/saw it when I was 10
//I'm not 10 any more
2007-05-24 11:55:47 PM
I like Dune and that's science fiction right... Okay, the movie sucked but the books were great and the first one was only published 10 years after LotR. The SciFi Channel miniseries was great too.

/Maybe just the first 2 books were great.
//No pics.

Lifelong Trekker here.

I got Marina's Sirtis' autograph at a Star Trek convention once. She has a British accent and nice penmanship.

Then I had sex with her. Lots of times. She said I was the best sexer she'd ever seen, or something, because I'm really good at sex and I have sex all the time. With girls.

dmax: But still, on dark clear nights, I look up into that sky and see those stars and remember that feeling of the numinous, that I could float forever, waving my arms like Poole or Bowman, and somewhere I could - if things went right - become a starchild.

After I read that, the final line from the movie ran through my head, and I literally got the chills.

"My God, it's full of stars..."

Let's see. George Lucas...greatest sci-fi film, nope, looks like it came out twenty years ago last August.

/Seriously, A New Hope isn't even the best Star Wars film ever.

hoots_toot_ochaye: Nope subby, the greatest sci-fi movie of all time celebrated its 80th birthday last March 13.

Fark yeah!

Blade Runner sucks ass, and I know I am not alone with this.
2007-05-25 12:06:42 AM
For the first time in 30 years, "Cool" was used to describe a Star Wars article. Subby, there is nothing cool about Star Wars.. even though it's a fantastic movie.

Snake is unhappy at not getting a mention in this thread

science fiction, science fantasy, science adventure fantasy fiction, whatever.

Come on, there's no love for the most badass villian of all time! I mean more badass than Vader himself, since even HE wouldn't stoop this low:

/Palpatine wouldn't even zap anybody down there!
2007-05-25 12:07:29 AM
Two issues-

Crayola3, you may want to rethink where you put a few of those films, I, Robot is based on Asimov's writings...and no one will ever accuse him of writing Science Fantasy. That's just one example.

And to others who want to submit Alien as an example of stellar Science Fiction, I have to disagree. It is stellar, but it's not Science Fiction. It's a horror film, with a setting of space. The tagline says it all, "In space, no one can hear you scream." The idea was, with a dark enough set, watching a film of this nature in a darkened theater would make audience members feel isolated and alone. They'd identify with the characters. Empathy would override sympathy, and soon the entire audience would succumb to the feelings of isolation and fear. Aliens and the stupid 3rd and 4th movies are all more Science Fiction than Horror. But to call Alien anything other than a Horror film is to do it a great diservice.

//turn off minor rant.
//turn off teaching mode.
//go back to the hole I crawled out of.

Daraymann: Blade Runner sucks ass, and I know I am not alone with this.

I read this in someone's profile tonite...

"You have to remember, there's only two people on the internet at any given time.
You, and that person who has a LOT of voices in their head.
They like you.
You are their friend.
All of their friend."

wcstormcrow: But to call Alien anything other than a Horror film is to do it a great diservice

I agree halfway......teh only other film that comes to mind quickly that describes the emptiness of space as well as the first Alien did is maybe 2001. No flashy lasers, no explosion noises in space, no unecessary bullshiat, etc

That said, cant believe no one has mentioned this:

Not the best one, but up there in my book.

/half asleep, forgive if i didnt make point as well as i could have

THE HouseCat 2007-05-24 11:23:06 PM

Guilty pleasures?
That would be anything produced by Charles Band

2007-05-25 12:16:17 AM
I saw the original Battlestar Galactica pilot movie in the theatre. Minor plot differences: The Cylons were part organic, and they got all stabby on Count Baltar at the end.

/greatest sci-fi film? hahahahahaha. no.

PatGund: "/wanders off to find a copy on DVD..."

B-b-but Blade Runner?
2007-05-25 12:21:15 AM
How about they both suck, and are just pop-sci-fi; the Britney Spears of sci-fi, one might say.
