Lucas needs to write something like Dawson's Creek about a young Luke in love and full of angst and call it TOSHI STATION.

The big difference is that almost all the special effects in Matrix except for the "Real World" AI stuff was done with real actors. The bullet-time stuff was supercomplicated trick photography - only the bullets/trails were actually rendered 3D graphics.

Meanwhile, large parts of the Smith fights in Revolutions/Reloaded were done using rendered 3D models instead of real people... and the effect is terrible. Even if you can't *see* that it's a puppet, you can *feel* it, and you stop caring.

Look at Hellboy: the first brawl against Samael is awesome brutality, because it's real people and real models. Later fights? Puppets, and thus forgettable.

Imho, any action scene falls apart the moment that the actor is replaced with a 3D rendering unless you're making a Pixar-style fully-animated movie.

Come on, we are talking about a guy that had

Liam Neeson, oscar winner
Ewan McGregor, future oscar winner
Natalie Portman, future oscar winner
AND Sam Jackson

All in the same movie...

All seemed to be doing their best Keanu Reeves impersonations. This isnt new, look at the acting in the EP4, it was horrible when compared to EP5 and EP6...the only 2 star wars films Lucas did not direct. The man is a bad director when it comes to bringing out quality acting in people.

He should stick to writing and letting someone else direct the films like he did with the Indiana Jones movies. Hell, I would give my balls for a Star Wars film written by Lucas and directed by Spielberg.

A KOTOR movie would be cool, but so would a movie dealing with the Mandalorian wars. Or a movie explaining what happened to Revan and the Exile (unless KOTOR III or a future KOTOR game further past that deal with it).

Darth Revan was a woman? I didnt know that. Where did you find out that fact Hallows_Eve?

She was if you chose her to be. Though honestly I think the 'canonical version' is supposed to be the light side/male, it would be more interesting to not follow that line.

/oh yeah, the Exile is female too.

Did you play KOTOR II?

When you release Atton from his containment on Pergus if you ask questions of him he reveals Revan was a woman, and it stays that was as Canon unless you correct him. But the fact that Revan is intially a woman in the conversation means that Revan was indeed supposed to be a woman.

draconian:

directed by Spielberg.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that. Spielberg's starting to show cracks. AI was abysmal. War of the Worlds, totally forgettable. He isn't a guaranteed success anymore, especially on films where there's a sizable load of VFX.

I would probably suggest someone a little more modern who has a better grasp of melding story and CG. Peter Jackson I think would hit one out of the park (Ok, I know King Kong was somewhat crappy and about 45 mins too long, but I look at that as him being too close to the material). Or even Mike Newell, if you want an alternate. He directed the Goblet of Fire and did a pretty good job.

Jar Jar was my ex-gf's favorite Star Wars character.

Notice I said ex.

I agree Revan and the Exile should both be female. They are both MUCH more interesting that way... AND there would have to be much less Bastila... and since I can't stand her... Yay!

Anyhow, surely if they were going to do a KOTOR movie, it would at best reference the dark lord Revan and be set waaaay after KOTOR 2? I would hope so anyhow... I read a book about Darth Bane the first of the solitary sith lords that would make a great movie. Very, very dark though... probably too dark for Lucas to do anything good with.

Lets face it, ep1-3 would have been great if he wasnt the damn director.

And producer or whoever is responsible for that CGI crapfest.

I went to the cinema expecting a movie and ended up feeling like I was watching a cut scene collection of some video game.

Those three movies are basically nothing but Lucas(film) jerking off to CGI that mostly isn't necessary and is only there because it could be done and they had a nerdgasm about doing it (accidentally listening to a couple of minutes of Ep.III's DVD commentary seems to support that).

And those smooth "it's further away, so apply some more Gaussian blur" backgrounds looked about as convincing as the mountains painted on tapestry in 50 year old westerns.
No wonder they used plain grass hills and a desert setting for the big battles in Ep1 and Ep2.
I think the battle between CGI-monsters A (Jarjarbage folks) and pixel piles B (droid army) in Ep1 took place on the Windows XP default desktop background.

Hey, at least indoor walls or the odd chair or piece of funrniture could have been "real"
But sadly, this way the only thing made of wood in those movies is the acting.

I'll never get why everyone's so hard on Lucas.

It's freaking sci-fi fantasy for fark's sake. Enjoy it, or go watch something else.

My kids, aged 6-13 now, liked Ep. 1-3, far, far more than 4-6. Weren't we all kids when Ep. 4 came out? I think he hit the target with his demographic, which is KIDS, not grown-up fan boys obsessed with the whole thing.

That, and I can tell you if my son finds out they're making another Star Wars movie, he'll probably shiat himself with glee.

That'll make finding presents for the following Christmas much easier too ;)

Episodes 1 and 2 should have taken place in the first 3/4 or so of Episode 1. (Yes, that means Hayden Christensen would have only been in the series for less than an hour.) Episodes 2 should have featured an adult Anikan played by a completely (and much older) actor, and ended with him becoming Vader. Episode 3 should have focused on Vader rising to power.

My thoughts exactly. In fact, I would have preferred Episode III continued right up until the start of Episode IV.

And to all those saying Lucas can't direct actors, you're right. In Empire Of Dreams, Harrison Ford and the others basically spell it out for you. ("I think he's a nice guy ... impatient when it comes to acting ..."). When the people in your own movie (who you're paying millions of dollars) say in an interview that you are a bad director, that's not a good sign. If only Irvin Kershner was younger - he should direct the sequels.

Because he's not a very talented screenwriter or director yet he's done both several times.

Just because it's sci-fi, it doesn't have to be executed poorly.

Makes sense, the newer films have a more modern style and sensibility to them. Ep 4 is easily the highest calibre of the the 6 films though.

I'm all for it, even if it's not 'up to par', it's still Star Wars, and I'm a big fan, so, yeah, a new movie would rock.

The worst Star Wars movie, to me, is still better than most other things I really don't want to watch, but are much more popular. I'm thinking of American Idol and Oprah, for instance, two things I really really can't stand. And Harry Farking Potter. Damn him to hell, I say.

So, yeah, new Star Wars Movie? that's a 'yay' in my book.

bring it on!

The only movie of recent times that managed to have an assload of visual effects and still be a fine movie is the Matrix

I think Lord of the Rings made good use of CGI and how they combined and balanced it with assloads of miniature models, actors in costumes and shooting on real outside locations.

The only things that I remember making me think "that's awful, they shouldn't have done it" are the parts showing off Legolas (climbing on the cave troll and on the elephant in the third part).

Then why pay attention? If you don't like his work, don't both with it. I hate John Woo movies, but I'm not going to go bash him in a thread about Face/Off the Sequel.

Personally, I think, other than the plot holes where 1-3 meet 4-6, they're all about on the same level.

I didn't expect a brain-stimulating experience going into any of them. But I still enjoyed them - all of them.

I think I'm the only Star Wars nut and serious gamer on the planet who thought KOTOR was absolute garbage. Seriously, I couldn't believe anyone bought into it.

It's so convenient that a thousand years before any of the SW stories Jedis were having their asses handed to them routinely by any Joe Six-pack because lightsaber-resistant cortosis vibraswords were as commmon as sand on tatooine. Oh, and so were fencing skills that could rival even the mighty Jedi.

I've never been so dissapointed to play a Jedi in any game- Jedi had no perceivable advantage in melee combat. No moves, no reflexes, no nuthin. A couple force powers that were awkward to implement.

That said, I think a pre-prequel is the greatest idea Lucas has had in a long time. It comes down to two words, baby:

DARTH MAUL

The best dark side character in the entire trilogy of prequels, and he was killed off without so much as a speck of character development. I'd HAPPILY pay out the price of a movie ticket to see this guy make a name for himself.

they need to make a star wars movie about this guy:

HK: The other 2 percent is that he is just lookign for trouble and needs to be blasted, but that might be wishfull thinking from my part.

I knew George Lucas was a pussy when he didnt kill Han Solo. Like Harrison Ford said, "In a story this epic, someone has to die."

Also.....EP 1-3 suck mainly because I hate Jedi's and Darth Lords that do unecessary backflips when fighting. WTF?

Totally, I remembered that about 5 mins after my original post. Can't believe I forgot about that. But, good catch, I'd definitely agree with that.

I'd offer both Gunther's testicles (and maybe even one of yours if Lucas holds out) for Ryan Wieber (of Ryan vs Dorkman infamy) to write the fight scenes.

The only problem I see with that is the actual hand to hand type fighting they did sucked. That karate chop move, all the pushing and shoving in the second one. Very retarded. Now the actual lightsaber dueling itself?? Masterful.
