Aw, jesus christ man. I'm gonna be teary eyed now. Go Sens.

2007-05-22 01:11:51 PM
Wow...that's sad...poor little guy.

Thank friggin' God he wasn't a Bruins fan, though...

holeinmybucket: I am sure this has helped the parents et al... but a 3 yr old does not really appreciate hockey -- he takes all the cues from the parents or others watching the game ( yes I have several kids). 5 or 6 yr olds 'get' the game and can watch independently. IE they could have said they won whether they did or not and / or have said 'we all decided to cheer for Buffalo' and the kid would have got the same 'enjoyment'...

just sayin..

Why?

Wow. Nothing. Sorry the little mite died, but, uh... not tearing up over here.

yawn.

I thought the report was a little heavy handed, actually.

Although the dressing him in the jogging suit and holding him for an hour was kinda sweet.

/window seat...
//yeah.

Until the parents found out and demanded that you give him back...

2007-05-22 01:16:57 PM
Well who cares if he understood what was going on. It obviously was enjoyment for him. Pretty damn sad.

Whatshisname: I think if I added "sarcastic" it would have been more appropriate. You should add "gullible" to YOUR profile.

Seriously though, stop focusing on my awesomeness and discuss this story. Very sad indeed.

2007-05-22 01:21:35 PM
Should put him in the front of the Zamboni where the ice is stored and drive him around between periods............

(Yeah I know, Hell bound)

2007-05-22 01:22:33 PM
Geez, I feel like shiat backing my team in the second round now.

Godspeed sweetie. R.I.P.

2007-05-22 01:31:38 PM
Wow, heartbreaking. :( I wonder if any of the team will be able to go to the funeral? I bet the family would love to see a couple of the players there.

/dammit, something in my eye
//*sniff*

Well then. That made me sad. :(

Ack. So torn. Near Toronto, it's touch to cheer for the hated Sens, but they're SO much better than either alternative. Then I read this...

ARG!

/ Thankfully, not much of hockey fan, more basketball
// Will PRIVATELY cheer for the Sens

Jesus, he reminded me of my son in that picture which didn't help reading the article.

2007-05-22 01:38:41 PM
Wow, that picture was cutest, saddest, damn thing I've seen in a long time. A touching article that didn't go overboard with the schmaltz either.

-Tragic yet endearing and peaceful death
-Includes sports and the passion involved in some form
-Enduring quote from father proving love

Well, it passes the "Field of Dreams" test so I guess guys are allowed to cry.

2007-05-22 01:42:31 PM
fark you, subby.

And thanks.

RIP, little guy.

In April, Elgin found himself in a front-row seat at a practice as part of one of his final wishes. At the time, Mr. Fisher held Elgin while skating around the ice.

...Fisher visited Elgin at home in Carleton Place, Ont. They watched a movie and played with toy cars, because Elgin was too weak to pick up his hockey stick.

I could care less about hockey, but I admire what this guy did a lot.

God bless you little man, and yes, there's hockey in heaven......

Yeah...he really stepped up. Sad circumstances, but great to see that kind of thing happen.

Having 2 boys, I'm just thankful that they are both healthy and happy. All of you who have healthy children should be thankful as well. I wont forget this story for awhile.

petuniapup: The only iffy part for me was when the mom washed and redressed him, clipped his nails, and held his body for an hour. I wasn't sure whether that was postmortem or not. (If so...maybe I just don't know what she was going through.)

Why? Is it your opinion that only a coroner or a mortician should ever have to touch the dead? Even when it is a close loved one?

Quite frankly, I found that final bit of personal care to be the most touching part of the story, and in its way, very sweet and uplifting. The world would be a much better place if that were the norm rather than the exception.

I hope someone cares enough to treat me very much like that when I die, rather than leaving it to someone paid to do so. Being dead, it won't actually matter to me, but knowing someone cares that much would make my last moments just before death better.

Its not fair that little kids like this get cancer at an impossibly young age while people like Paris Hilton still walk the Earth. Not fair at all.

And that one dork above is wrong, kids that age can certainly know a lot about subjects like hockey. My nephew, at that age, knew every team in the NHL by just seeing their team colors on screen. He knew their goaltenders and any major stars on each too. (It was actually uncanny and a little weird. We didn't coach him, he just picked it up.)

2007-05-22 01:54:06 PM
I don't have kids so I can't imagine what it would take for me to whisper "you can go now" into my child's ear. But I imagine it would be strength beyond anything I've had to generate before.

Great parents for making his dreams come true before he passed.

Great guys on the Sens for caring enough to help.

/off to get a tissue

Lost in all this... and rightfully so... is how classy a human being Mike Fisher is. The story of the two of them playing cars on the Thursday and that photo are really emblematic of Fisher's person.

I choked up pretty hard when the Dad told him he didn't have to hold on if he didn't want to. I can't imagine saying that to my kid brother, let alone a child. If the Senators winning the Cup will do anything to heal these parents' pain, even if just for a while, then I hope it happens.

Thanks for inventing childhood cancer, Jehovah! What a swell farking deity it is that inflicts this on people.

I am gonna blame the subby for making be blubber like a baby.

R.I.P little man

Since the Stars made a hasty exit I can route for any team I want to so Go SENS!!!!

Little guy might not have understood the mechanics of the game, holeinmybucket, but you can bet your ass that kid enjoyed going to an exciting hockey game and watching big guys skating around on the ice, getting to go out on the ice himself, and visiting with the players.

You're not alone in that feeling.

And big ups to Mike Fisher, what a good dude he is.

Thoughts like that make me feel a little guilty about teaching a group of Cub Scouts to yell "kick em in the head!" at a game a few years bad. :D

Ah geez. It's getting a little dusty in here.

I'm not a big fan of the Eastern Conference, but this gives me a team to cheer for in the finals since I hate the Ducks and Wings. Go Sens!

Read TFA and could only be thankful he wasn't a Buckeye fan.

I feel very bad for the kid, and very bad for the family.

But I'd still rather cheer on a bunch of zitty teenagers kicking my war-vet grandfather in the nuts than cheer on the sens.

Quite frankly, I found that final bit of personal care to be the most touching part of the story, and in its way, very sweet and uplifting. The world would be a much better place if that were the norm rather than the exception.

Why? Is it your opinion that everyone should want to spiffy up corpses?

Snarkiness aside, I was a little uneasy with a mother feeling the need/desire to do these things after the child had died.
Can we agree that the kid might've benefitted more (unless doing these things inflicted pain or something), had he been alive to enjoy his mother's caregiving?
If I died right after blowing a snot bubble or vomiting on myself, sure, it'd be nice for someone to clean me off a little bit. But that seems different than what the mom was doing, IMHO.
As you yourself pointed out, while you'd want someone to treat your remains with care...you'd be dead and it wouldn't really matter to you.

As Fark is my witness, I'm not trying to start a religious threadjack. As I originally noted, maybe I just don't know what the mom was going through.

And I apologize if this upsets and Farkers.

*sigh* I added that last line after I previewed the rest.
"and" = "any"

2007-05-22 02:35:36 PM
Ahhh shiat... farking kid. Got something in my eye.

No wonder Fisher's been playing like a demon on speed.

Go Sens!

2007-05-22 02:36:16 PM
Yeah, I've gotta say, I kinda don't feel so bad that my team was eliminated by the Sens anymore. That said, I do still want the ducks to win, after all, he cant't die twice right? All seriousness though, RIP litlle hockey kid.
