shenanigans..... dude's on the wrestling team and somebody's picking on him, so he sucker punches him in the hallway? total BS!

He should be suspended and prosecuted.

Agreed. I think that the sucker puncher was most likely the bully in this case. Just because he is gay (wrestler and film club is a dead giveaway to that aspect of his personality) doesnt mean he isnt the bully.

SchlingFo: Although, in schools nowadays, the best way to handle being bullied would be to go to an internet cafe, set up a free email address, create a Myspace page with the bully's personal info, and detail plans about going on a school shooting spree.

Send an anonymous phone call/email regarding the Myspace page to the school authorities.

You will only get their attention if the word 'gun' pops up in the conversation.

Soooo true. My nephew has been bullied for the past year or so at his middle school by a student who finally assaulted him in the boys' room by smearing shiat on his face. My nephew is small for his age and timid. He said the "gun" word.

School admins went ape-shiat and were going to expel him (this is a small school system - there is NO other middle school in the county), while the bully who actually ASSAULTED him was simply moved to another class.

It took my sister talking "lawsuit" for implicitly condoning an assault on school property for the admins to back down. The bully remains unpunished.

For those calling shananigans, I was picked on from my first day to my last day of school and I lettered in football. I was a "jock", a nice kid, good grades, etc. But b/c of my last name, I was just always picked on by kids at school. I just went out for football to show them that I could and I lettered.

Although I do find it funny now that after our final varsity game, one of the guys who had tried starting stuff with me for 4 years, endlessly, was weeping his "oh football is over" cry and apologized for being "a dick" for all these years. I was like, "kinda late now" and walked away. God I hated those assholes.

I do agree though, most of those guys are all bark and no bite, sock em once and they'll leave you alone. I snapped on one of those kids in school once, knocked him in the lip, gave him stitches. The principle called me in, the kid was in there too. He asked me why I punched the kid, told him that the punk and his buddies were trying to start a fight with me. Thanked me for telling him the truth and let me go. That kid got punished, not me. Being a good student and polite to the staff pays off.

"My son is almost 14 and scrawny, and he's a wiseass, so he gets bullied a bit. I've always told him that he can never throw the first punch, but if some other joker does, then he should go batshiat crazy and fly into the guy.

He's afraid of getting hurt, and I tell him that more often than not, he WILL get a bit hurt but the result would be that the bully will leave you alone because he doesn't really want anyone fighting back, and he'll get more respect from other prospective bullies. So far he hasn't had to fight, but he is standing up more for himself and seeing that a lot of times the bullies just walk away."

How about using some COMMON SENSE and teach your kid not to be such a WISEASS.... Teach your kids that when they say something wrong they may receive the negative reprucussions for their words or actions. And if he's scared of being hurt, maybe he should change his ways and think twice about making the remarks that he does. Odds are if he goes batshiat crazy won't stop a kid would seriously want to put even a bigger ass pounding on your kid. This and these suggestions you're giving him, will most likely land him in jail in his adult future. How about teaching your kid not to talk so much shiat, rather than telling him to back up his shiat talking?

I still call shananigans.....

do y'all remember highschool? Guys on the wrestling team were jocks. jocks do not get picked on....period. remember? jocks are and will be the bullies. remember?

He was also in the film club.

He could just be that awkward guy who won't quit the wrestling team even though the real jocks pick on him.

I was small, a late bloomer, and one of the youngist in my class. K-7 was spent in white minority schools. Every so often I'd have to fight or cold-cock some kid who picked on me. I usually lost the fight, but no one farked with me for the rest of the school year and ended up with more friends as a result.

Guys have to fight - it's just the way it is.

Prolly best for this kid to have just put the other kid in a submission hold.

Next step....Kick the snot out of the principal. Do I have to think of everything? Either that or hire a good lawyer and bankrupt the school. Most administrators are terrified of lawsuits and bad publicity. Many, if not most will cave after one letter from a law firm.

One of the things I absolutely hate about our "modern" culture is that there is this strong social tendency to suppress consequences. Too often, rude, insulting, offensive, and bullying kids grow up into rude, insulting, offensive, and bullying adults never having suffered consequences to discourage that kind of development. As this article and many of the anecdotes in this thread demonstrate, our systems of authority are paralyzed into permitting and perpetuating injustice - their only mission being to stop any and all "violence" no matter what preceded or precipitated it.

Certainly a social system that permits dueling has its disadvantages, but there's something to be said for the regulating effect that that the possible consequence of death brings to people's speech and actions. That may be excessive, but I'd like to suggest that there are some instances of violence that should be socially acceptable. That's easier than hoping that our authority structure suddenly start promoting justice.

If you're in a bar with your chick and some dude comes up to you and continues to call your chick a stupid whore and tell you that you're a punk biatch who can't do shiat about it, and you hit him, no rational person is going to say that you started the fight.

There's a reason we have the expression, "Them's fightin words."

um, i'm rational and i'd say you started the fight. you threw the first punch. i'd ask why you didn't just leave and let that drunk idiot continue to make a fool of himself at the bar.

he started the verbal assault, but instead of responding verbally, you started the physical assault.

also, i believe the kid on the wrestling team absolutely zero. watch the video of him. he oozes "prick."

My favourite bullying story is about a farker that posted in a similar thread a while ago.

He said that he got suspended one time for fighting, because the school had a zero tolerance policy towards being involved in a fight. They didn't care who started it, or if you were just trying to defend yourself. Apparently the kid tried to punch the guy back, a teacher witnessed the whole thing and they both got ended up suspended. The dad of the kid who defended himself came to talk to the Principal about it, with the son. When the principal finished explaining the policy, the dad hits the principal and the principal instinctively, hit back. Dad says, why did you fight back? Principal quietly threw out the suspension.

Bullied kids who are pussys turn into messed up adults. The ones that realize that the bullies are bottom-feeding scum that will polish shoes for the rest of their life turn into quite respectable (and sane) adults.

In the past, it was considered character building to stand up to the bully, regardless the out come. However, those where the days before economic gap driven, armed gang, violence breeched schoolrooms.

If I were back in high school, /shutters, and the above was not an option, I would focus on documentation. Txt msg's, email, voice mail.

The Mobile phone has brought about an age of accountability (CTV tm?). It's fairly, easy to document conversations or situations, either with the voice recorder in a pocket or camera with a friend. Hot Key the voice recorder, hit the "panic" button. Hope the conversation is loud enough to get recorded.

oh and speaking of school fights
i went to a high school that up until my final year had about a lot of fights a year they actually solved the problem by shortening lunch by 10 minutes but anyways i once threw something from upstairs trying to get it into a trash can i hit some girl she though a friend of hers hit her in the head and a huge fight broke out!
i think a few kids got suspended for it but i don't think anyone ever noticed that i started it...

My kid(s) will be in Aikido from a young age so he can just neutralize the bullies as neccessary.

2007-05-20 12:48:13 PM
SchlingFo Regardless, when a student has been harrassing and threatening another student over an extended period of time, and the school refuses to do anything to stop it, the bullied student is going to find their own way to stop it.

I do agree that the school should have done something about the verbal harassment, but verbal harrassment is not a physical altercation. The kid in TFA elevated it. He is wrong.

Not saying I wouldn't pop the guy either, but I sure as hell wouldn't be complaining about being the victim. He was a victim of verbal taunting. OMG! Responding by fighting is going to be wrong pretty much all the time.

Taunting back to get the other guy to swing first, that's okay.

I got teased all the time in school, from early gradeschool to highschool grad. I think they had a different reason for teasing me tho, since I was pretty much friends with most of them anyways... See I snapped easily, and beat the crap outta someone almost every year I was in school, even took a swing at a principal once hehe.

So ya, in my case it was more that I could be counted on for some serious entertainement as I never failed to go after anyone, no matter how much bigger than me they were.

And no matter how many times I seriously hurt my brother, he never stopped bullying me. He knew I was dangerous, but he always thought he could handle me since he was so much bigger than me... To think he was actually surprised when I kicked him in the balls or broke that chair over him lol.

These stories always tick me off. My son went through some of this in 6/7th grades. There were a couple of students teasing him, pushing him, etc all the time. One day a kid pushed him up against the lockers and my son pushed him away. Can you guess which kid got in trouble? There whole attitude with the other kids was 'boys will be boys and we cant control everything', while my son got in trouble for standing up for himself. It was the same as in the news story. We had made numerous complaints to the school, but they never did anything.

patbooyah,

um, i'm rational and i'd say you started the fight. you threw the first punch. i'd ask why you didn't just leave and let that drunk idiot continue to make a fool of himself at the bar.

If you're in a bar, and someone comes up talking shiat like that, there is going to be a fight.

No, there is no way of avoiding it, walking away, or talking your way out of it.

If you turn around and walk away, you're just going to get jumped from behind.

In that case, the person has decided that they're going to throw down. It's your call as to whether you want to hit first, hit back, or get hit from behind and then stomped.

2007-05-20 12:52:54 PM
I don't believe in fighting. Some kid in eighth grade had an issue with me, I was getting off a school bus and he sucker-kicked me in the back of the head from behind. My head hit the curb and it knocked me senseless.

His family's apartment had a terrible fire the following Saturday evening. Good thing no one was home.

They pulled out everything they could salvage and put it in the front yard the following day. Must've been some hot embers left in the sofa or something, because that pile of furniture and clothes caught fire and the fire dept was called out again. Total loss.

This kid claims he was getting threats and other people told him about them as well.

How about this plan: Don't say anything. Don't do anything. Just write it all down. Write down every single thing that happens and who witnessed it. Any rumored threats and who told you.

Give a written copy to the principal and mail a copy to the school board. No action? Go to an attorney and get lawsuit happy, get a lot of publicity, embarrass the kid and his parents and the school.

Oh sure, you won't be able to go back to school there, all the other kids will think you're a wuss, and you will have screwed up some college choices who might have heard the news and may view you as a troublemaker, but you will certainly fark up the bully's life.

And if you spin it right, you can also say you COULD HAVE kicked his ass (much more credible if you are on the wrestling team like this kid), but you wanted to handle it without violence, like a responsible adult. You get kiss-up points from your mom and if you're lucky, damages from this kid's parents.

Of course, it's not as elegant and diabolical as Schlingfo's MySpace solution, but do you think this would work?

2007-05-20 12:53:28 PM
woodpecker from mars: Not surprising. When my son was having problems with a kid in school, I approached the principal about it. He said "maybe your son is sending signals he wants to be bullied." Yea, whatever.

"She was asking for it, your honor, dressing like the slut that she is."

/doesn't work, so why so should the above?

2007-05-20 12:53:47 PM
fishrockcarving,

Taunting back to get the other guy to swing first, that's okay.

What you're basically saying is that verbal abuse is never as bad as physical abuse.

That's absolutely untrue.

2007-05-20 12:54:56 PM
SchlingFo: There's a reason we have the expression, "Them's fightin words."

also exactly! you blame the aggressor just because you actually made the first punch does not mean you were the person who started the aggressive actions and such

blaming the kid for punching first while maybe not in this situation can sort of be like blaming the secret service for shooting someone who has a gun aimed at the president while shouting that he is going to kill him because they haven't fired a shot yet but have only verbally said i am going to shoot the president with their gun pulled out

It sounds like, to me anyways, that the wrestler/film kid is a popular kid in school and, along with his buddies, picked on this other kid all year. This other kid, being the tortured and disturbed soul that he is, started making threats he was going to shoot the kid(s) in question who were picking on him. The jock/wannabe film geek gets wind of this and decides hes going to man up and fight him in the hallway in front of his classmates in an attempt to assert his failing heterosexuality. Altogether making this headline almost completely and utterly inaccurate.

Bottom line: Two losers, in effect getting what they probably both deserved in the end.
