Meh, officials never care, especially near the end of the year. You will only get their attention if the word 'gun' pops up in the conversation.

Even if they did do something, it won't change anything. Whoever is picking on you will simply do the punishment and return to picking on you moreso.

So you simply take matters in your own hands and kick the guy's ass. None of this gun crap.

For this situation, I believe this exchange explains it the best:

'I thought you said, 'The law was powerless!''
'Yeah. Powerless to help you, not punish you.'

/Father always said: 'Respect others but don't take any shiat from anyone.'
//Was picked on alot
///Got into a fight with classmate at party and held my own
////Ridiculing stopped after that.
//Obscure quotes?

The American school system:
Buttering up the kids to deal with unjust and oppressive authority figures for the rest of their lives.

/My school was a prison
//Thought so poorly of it, it made me refuse to go to college.
///Which was stupid because now I'm in the Navy
////And now I realize I'd rather have gone to college.
//DIAF, all high school administrators.

I was picked on and swallowed my pride a lot as a kid.

When my kid was picked on, I told him to fight back if necessary. He may get suspended, but he wouldn't be in trouble from me.

He's now 16. A couple weeks ago, he stood up for himself. Against a guy who outweighed him by 65 pounds. Who knew how to fight.

Now I have to teach him "discretion is the better part of valor." Or, "don't be stupid."

2007-05-20 10:06:37 AM
I grew up the scrawny white kid at almost all black schools. In case you can't tell the inference there, it meant I got picked on and bullied a crap-ton...

This will sound horrible when I say this but...

When I started 4th grade I was at a new school. The picking on commenced, I kinda white rage snapped. Picked up a chair and laid out the guy screwing with me, jumped on top of him and started pounding face. Yeah, I got in trouble, yeah I got suspended for a week. I get home and my grandmother is pissed at me (grandparents raised me).

My grandfather gets home asks me what happened, then asked me why I got in the fight. I said "I was tired of him messing with me."

My grandfather asked me "DO you think he'll do it again?" I answered no.

At that point he said "well OK then" and it was done. Back at school I wasn't screwed with again, never "made up" with the guy but at least we had a "we'll just ignore each other" bit going on and I was fine with that.

As for discretion and valor, key is to learn that if you cant win a face to face fight, then don't fight face to face. There is no such thing as a "fair" fight, just make sure it's unfair in your advantage. (i.e. The chair mentioned above was applied from behind)

Next time the kid should blow away some of his classmates, then the administrators will do something.

2007-05-20 10:17:38 AM
Not surprising. When my son was having problems with a kid in school, I approached the principal about it. He said "maybe your son is sending signals he wants to be bullied." Yea, whatever.

For about four years of parents complaining, they never did anything about this kid. Cut to last month. He was arrested for sticking a drum stick (the musical kind) up another kid's ass.

woodpecker from mars: "maybe your son is sending signals he wants to be bullied."

Jesus Christ, that's some of the stupidest BS I've ever heard.

He was arrested for sticking a drum stick (the musical kind) up another kid's ass.

Well, at least it was the musical kind. Although the chicken kind isn't nearly as long. Tough choice.

Wanted to weigh in with my own story. Yeah, sometimes you just have to fight back if you're getting picked on. You might get your ass kicked, but if you bloody their nose, even if they won't respect you, they'll at least leave you alone.

When I was a sophomore in high school I just got sick of taking crap one day. I had some minor incidents before, but it was still the same old shiat to put up with. Finally during a gym class when some kid shoved me, I shoved him back. It escalated into a full-blown fight and I headbutted him twice.

Got suspended for two days, but fark-all if it wasn't worth it. Didn't get shiat in school again. And even though I got suspended, I got a wink-wink-nudge-nudge from one teacher, and applause from my nerd class.

School authority systems are shiat. They overreact at ridiculous things but constantly ignore actual problems students have. I'm glad I'm out of there. With all the ludicrous zero-tolerance bullshiat now, I don't know if I would have been expelled, rather than graduated with honors.

2007-05-20 10:47:18 AM
yay for zero tolerance!

no wonder kids are going nuts these days.

2007-05-20 10:58:21 AM
shenanigans..... dude's on the wrestling team and somebody's picking on him, so he sucker punches him in the hallway? total BS!

He should be suspended and prosecuted.

2007-05-20 11:02:46 AM
Read the article. It sounds like some guy was verbally harassing him and he responded by punching the guy.

He started the fight when he threw the first punch.

fishrockcarving: He started the fight when he threw the first punch.

Dude, that's ridiculous and you know it. If someone has been riding someone's ass all year long in school, and the recipient of the harassment finally snaps and hits the dude, the person who's been farking with the kid all year is the one that started the fight.

If you're in a bar with your chick and some dude comes up to you and continues to call your chick a stupid whore and tell you that you're a punk biatch who can't do shiat about it, and you hit him, no rational person is going to say that you started the fight.

There's a reason we have the expression, "Them's fightin words."

Although, in schools nowadays, the best way to handle being bullied would be to go to an internet cafe, set up a free email address, create a Myspace page with the bully's personal info, and detail plans about going on a school shooting spree.

Send an anonymous phone call/email regarding the Myspace page to the school authorities.

The bully will be so busy trying get the legal cock out of his ass that he won't have time to mess with you.

I was picked on a lot in junior high school and eventually got into a pretty good fight with one of the kids that was constantly giving me shiat. We kind of ran in the same group of "friends" (came from the same elementary school), and lots of other kids we went to elementary school with were totally egging on the fight. After history class in seventh period, I had kids telling me "X wants to fight you" but I didn't think it would really happen. So I walked to eighth period math, and right as I got into the building, I saw him walking towards me. He got up in my face, and I told him I wasn't afraid of him.

He threw the first punch and it was on. About 200 kids immediately circled us, going about four or five rows deep in the tiny hall we were in. It allowed us to get some good fighting time in before the teachers could break us up. After they did, he threw another punch at me when we were separated and missed, so I came back with two to his dome.

Dad always said "don't throw the first punch, but throw the last punch." So I did, and I got suspended for an entire week. But when I told my parents about it, and how I didn't throw the first punch, it was just like I got a week vacation instead.

I'm guessing you DRTFA.......

The "Victim" waited in the hallway and sucker punched the kid from behind. That isn't snapping under pressure.

It would have been better to have dealt with the bully off campus and to beat the ever living shiat out of him.

real shaman: The "Victim" waited in the hallway and sucker punched the kid from behind.

Not necessarily --

Finally, Bryan said the other student shoved him and made menacing remarks so Bryan waited until after his next class and then he retaliated.

"I threw a punch and I nicked him really, in the back left corner of his head. I wrapped my arms around him and I brought us both to the ground. I put him in a painless submission hold and said, 'Okay, now that you're down there, listen to me," said Bryan Sims.

Maybe he just threw a Chuck Lidell-type left hook that caught the guy right behind the ear.

2007-05-20 11:33:29 AM
real shaman,

Yes, I did read the article.

Snapping doesn't just occur immediately after being picked on.

Regardless, when a student has been harrassing and threatening another student over an extended period of time, and the school refuses to do anything to stop it, the bullied student is going to find their own way to stop it. Whether it's getting the other student from behind, killing themselves, or killing other students.

When a person is forced to be in a certain environment, and the people entrusted with ensuring his safety in that environment refuse to do so, they're going to feel like they're in a corner, and they're going to do what any of us will do if we're backed into a corner.

Life's not fair. Hell, if the people picking on the kid were privileged white kids, it'd be a good life lesson of what to expect in the real world. And really, isn't that school is for?

2007-05-20 12:02:16 PM
Funny, nearly the same thing happened to me and I didn't make the news.

Of course, this was in the 80s, so nobody was paying attention to bullying.

I still call shananigans.....

do y'all remember highschool? Guys on the wrestling team were jocks. jocks do not get picked on....period. remember? jocks are and will be the bullies. remember?

At least he wasn't a pussy like the Columbine brats. Then again, the kid in this story actually sounds like he was picked on, so he isn't really like them anyway.

2007-05-20 12:03:38 PM
I had this happen once. First one starts screwing with you. Then since you do nothing others pile on. This went on for about a week. So I told the primary one I was going to kick his ass after school. Gasps of ooohs and aaahs circulated throughout the school the entire day. Predictably there was a large crowd gathered. So we fought and I lost, but I did get a couple good sticks in.

Once we were hauled before the principal to explain ourselves, I said 'Nothing was happening to stop the harassment so I had to take care of it myself. Now it's over. Doesn't matter who won the fight.'

Guy looked at me oddly then told me I could leave.

People have to stick up for themselves, school administration rules on this are not relevant.

If it's story time, let it be my turn.

In 7th grade, the kid with the locker next to mine in gym class would fark with me everyday. Teasing and stuff, the usual. The kid was a foot taller than me and muscular.

One day, he started in on me, and I grabbed the back of his head and shoced it into the locker door. He looked at me, he walked away.

The next day, I was prepared to get the shiat beat out of me. Instead, when the kid walked in, he apologized to me.

I never got punished, and it was the single most gratifying moment of my life.

2007-05-20 12:08:05 PM
I never really got picked on regularly in school myself. Except for when high school came along.

I decided freshman year that since we could wear anything we wanted (middle school restricted us to a handful of primary colors, of which I got busted for wearing the wrong SHADE of green. That was quickly overturned when they couldn't figure out exactly what shade I was wearing and said the rule was any green) so I wore tie-dye as I enjoyed colors, and still do. I was a damn macaw in a school of peahens, so of course someone was bound to notice.

These three guys who were apparently friends were friendly with me in my Electronics class, thinking I was a sophomore, about the same time they figured out I was a freshman they decided that tie-dye meant you were gay, and thus that was the spiel for the entire year. Teacher didn't care but he was the type to, probably more "hey he's not asking for help and isn't in any obvious pain so I'll let him beat the lights out of them", he was one of the best teachers I ever had, just one to let people solve their own problems before butting in.

It never really stopped, they were just the type to be afraid of being gay themselves so they just mocked any perceived threats, real or not. My reputation amongst people I knew was strong as I was the go to guy for ANY bit of information, big or small. Virtually everyone knew of me and thus had no reason to pick on me. Being built like a lineman helped albeit I am only 5'7. Wrestling coach made an attempt at recruiting me, but as one of his members told me I should shave my chest in math class once that rather ended that as a possibility.

Elementary school we did have a quasi-school bully. He ended his reign as he was tired of being universally hated, and at most he would just go around and piss people off. Nothing physical.

2007-05-20 12:08:13 PM
Sorry, Bryan deserved to be punished.

"Finally, Bryan said the other student shoved him and made menacing remarks so Bryan waited until after his next class and then he retaliated."

At this point in time, he screwed up. He should have gone to the admin or retaliated (which would have still gotten him suspended) right then instead of waiting till after the next period and ambushing the bully. All he did was ensure that the rules and law were on the bully's side and not his.

"I threw a punch and I nicked him really, in the back left corner of his head. I wrapped my arms around him and I brought us both to the ground. I put him in a painless submission hold and said, 'Okay, now that you're down there, listen to me," said Bryan Sims."

Should the bully be punished for making threats and such against this kid? HELL YES. In this day and age where kids kill other kids over stupid crap, should the school adminstration have taken more steps to resolve this? HELL YES

How ever the kid went about it wrong. And because he did, he broke the rules and will get punished for it. Sometimes its not black and white, sometimes it is. Zero tolerance is stupid and learning how to think (ie no zero tolerance) is what makes society livable.

And unless his friends tell the adminstration that what Bryan said about the other kid is true, then the "threats" are a he said he said thing. Both are claiming that they were threatened and picked on by the other.

/Was picked on while in school.
//Finally stood up for myself and that stopped.
///This was in an age where they punished the person that started the fight more than the person being attacked.

2007-05-20 12:08:28 PM
Look, this happens from time to time, and I've said it before and I will say it again...

If someone bullies you, you have 2 choices: (1) do nothing and they continue because they perceive you as weak; or, (2) kick their ass so hard they don't have a chance to think.

Option 2 is discouraged because fighting is "bad, mmm'kay", but option one is to be steamrollered over. I'm going to get my kids in some kind of martial arts class at age 3 and explain to them that option 2 is the only successful choice--but they're not to become the bully. I could throw in a line from Empire about Jedis and not attacking, but I figure that's a wash.

If you kick a bully's ass, he's less likely to come back after you (alone, at least.) So get proficient in fighting multiple opponents.

2007-05-20 12:09:03 PM
So how does this work at a fight school?

2007-05-20 12:09:10 PM
In real life, if I assault - or even "pick on" - another adult, I will get hammered. Twice, first from the law and second from the lawsuit(s). If I did that crap at work, I would be immediately fired and likely blacklisted from my profession. But somehow it's OK to do if you're under 18. No wonder our schools are so farked up.

Not necessarily: Imagine the fun some kid with nothing to lose, threatening a jock, knowing that if the jock defends himself, he'll be suspended and probably thrown off his team, possibly screwing up his college plans.

Not much different from tormenting a chained-up attack dog.

Tought shiat kid, you fight you pay the price. I fought in HS several times, I didn't cry because I got punished, I expected it and paid the penalty. It was worth it.

My son is almost 14 and scrawny, and he's a wiseass, so he gets bullied a bit. I've always told him that he can never throw the first punch, but if some other joker does, then he should go batshiat crazy and fly into the guy.

He's afraid of getting hurt, and I tell him that more often than not, he WILL get a bit hurt but the result would be that the bully will leave you alone because he doesn't really want anyone fighting back, and he'll get more respect from other prospective bullies. So far he hasn't had to fight, but he is standing up more for himself and seeing that a lot of times the bullies just walk away.

/The "Victory" scene from last week's Entourage was great!

I've been picked on all my educational life, less in highschool because I hung out with more people like me.

In 4th grade I snapped twice. 1) some dude (who repeatedly picked on me) shot me with a rubber band outside, I kicked him in the back of the knee. 2) one guy that was a douche punched me, I chased him down, knocked him to the ground & kneed him in the side.

In 7th grade some prick kept taking and breaking my pens & (mechanical) pencils. I told the teacher, she offered me a penicl, WTF woman!? One day he didi it and we had a sub. I flipped IN class, jumped the table put the dude in a choke hold and held tight. He stabbed me with the mechanical pencil (ow) so I started beating his head.

All in all, these losers never bothered me again.
...and now, I sorta realize that if you get on my bad side and I finally snap it's gonna be crazy.

2007-05-20 12:19:01 PM
I got hit in the face on Wednesday with a softball during my company party. I am so going to get that softball back when it least expects it.
On another note, since we're all singing Cum by Ya (couldn't resist)...
Sophomore year in HS. I was the token white girl in Tucson. I was not terribly popular, but had a lot of friends and was a drama/chior geek. One day, a Hispanic girl that I barely knew called me a slut in the hall between classes. She and her girlfriends surrounded me. I've never been a fighter (except with the softball). I asked her why she called me a slut. She said that it's because I was. I asked her if she was a virgin and told her that I was. She came after me and the English teacher happened to be right there, right then and screamed. Still have never laid my hands on anyone, not even my children.
I would, however, like to take down my kids' stepmother. She can suck my a$$ the way she treats them.

it's not just the other assbag kids in school that provoke school shootings

its when the administration shrugs it off and thinks everything is okay, and doesnt want to do shiat

yeah, everything is okay until that sweet kid who didnt talk much has a 12 gauge in your mouth.

this happened in valparaiso indiana, kid files reports of acts of racial discrimination against him to the administration. what does the administration do? nothing. they actually laughed at him. mother comes in, laughs at her also. they get f'ed with a multi-million dollar law suit.

1 year later (i think)

kid brings a machete and other large blade into his spanish class and cuts up a bunch of people. 15 year old kid, being put on trial as an adult. i think he's serving time in westville state now.

/this story has no point
//but this bs pisses me off

My kids are going to Private school so help me god. Public schools have lost all common sense, not to mention their level of education tend to be horrendous.

Suspending a kid for bringing Tylenol to school, or a plastic butter knife, or a plastic water squirt gun...

Now suspending one kid for getting in the fight but not the other kid that was doing the instigating is just plain unfair.

2007-05-20 12:23:53 PM
So, essentially we've got heresay and the whiner even started the fight.

We should blame someone for not mediating this. Hey, we could blame school officials.

Beautiful man. Beautiful.
