I had 8 Sam Adams Weiss beers a couple of weeks ago.
Impressive stuff.

Sam Adams Octoberfest is a pale imitation of a true Oktoberfest. Go out and buy Spaten Oktoberfest, or Hacker-Pschorr, or one of the other authentic biers that are actually drank at Munich's Oktoberfest.

Looks like it will pass German Purity Laws but then again I'll stick with Guinness.

GUINNESS FOR STRENGTH

2002-08-25 12:54:40 PM
I had a Guinness and a Sam Adams Boston Lager last night. Mmmm....

2002-08-25 12:56:29 PM
Well, I'm sure it's no Bud...
I'll have to try Sam Adams sometime though. I hear it's good.

Sam Adams is over-rated. The Scotch Ale was pretty good but they quit making it. I do, however, have seven bottles of 1995 Sam Adams Triple Bock tucked away in the back of my liquor cabinet. There used to be twelve but I drank five.

2002-08-25 01:11:56 PM
I stopped drinking the Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer when one time after taking a hearty chug, I burped and it tasted like liverwurst...and I haven't eaten liverwurst since I was about 9 years old. Yuck.

2002-08-25 01:17:08 PM
I hope it's better than the regular Sam Adams. That stuff is nasty. I'm with Dougjonz. I've never tried Spaten Oktoberfest, but if is's as good as the other Spatens (Optimator, mmmmmm) it must kick azz!

2002-08-25 01:20:13 PM
My sister says Sam Adams is crap beer, but I like it! But, then again, she lives in Oregon...

2002-08-25 01:24:06 PM
Was into Sam Adams way before the O&A freaks rooned it!

2002-08-25 01:28:05 PM
Spaten Oktoberfest is fine. I had a Lowenbrau Oktoberfest in Munich once that was incredible. Found one here in the States a few years later and it tasted like crap.

I had a Duvel last night.

Best beer ever. This is the reason I drive home to Portland every august, bring back a truckload of Widmer.

Sam Adams seems inpressive if your normal beer intake is Bud Light and Coors. But seriously, there are so many better beers available.

2002-08-25 01:56:00 PM
Acrodizer, you took the words right out of my mouth. i hate beer, just aint my thing, till i went to the widmer beer garden in portands little downtown stadium.

From the link: "Deep-roasted crystal malt, caramel 60, and a special Moravian malt give this fruity, medium-bitter brew its intense malty character. "

You see, this is completely wrong. The number one ingredient in an Oktoberfest should be Munich malt. That's it. Maybe a little Vienna malt and perhaps a little crystal malt for color. The fact that they don't even mention Munich malt makes me suspicious.

Hey Lizard, when were you "into" Sam Adams, back when it was contract brewed in New York, or when it started being being brewed in Ohio? Do you agree that they seem to use a higher percentage of adjuncts in their Boston Lager than they used to, and when could you tell they made the change?

2002-08-25 02:20:30 PM
Everyone come to Ontario, Canada for the 2nd largest Oktoberfest in the world. No offense to German Farkers, but we're going to outdo you within a decade.

'Samuel Adams OctoberFest is malty, strong, dark.'

Exact same reasons why I love Tartan Special and the Sumerian beer I grew up with.

2002-08-25 02:22:22 PM
For the record I didn't grow up in ancient Sumeria, my father is an archeologist and a home brewer :)

Spaten Oktoberfest

Does anyone know what happened to J.W. Dundee's Honey Brown Ale? They now only seem to sell the Honey Brown Lager here in Arizona and the ale was better.

To each his own. I've had people tell me they like Grolsch, but to me it's like drinking a loaf of bread.

People who drink anything but Budweiser have some serious problems that I don't have the time to go into here.

Concering Sam Adams, the owner/brewer/whomever that does the commercials is just too annoying for anybody to want to buy this crap.

2002-08-25 03:01:18 PM
Sam Adams is crap. blah.

Problems like what? Like a sense of taste? ;)

Ommegang or Hennepin anyone? I love the beers from Cooperstown, NY.

I agree with most about the Spaten. Beck's Oktoberfest isn't bad either.

Spaten's OK. But sometimes it's been boiled in a warehouse for a while. Not very fresh.

Your local microbreweries often do the best Munich style helleslager.

History on Octoberfest beer: very malty. To celebrate the bountiful harvest, they load up on it. Yumm. My favorite time of year.

Sam Adams used to be a good beer, many years ago.

The best (bottled) *American beers today are (in no particular order):

Goose Island - India Pale Ale
Goose Island - Summertime Kolsch
Victory - Hop Devil IPA
Victory - Prima Pils
Two Brothers - Dog Days Dortmunder
Two Brothers - Domain DuPage Saison
Two Brothers - Edel Weiss Heifeweisen
Two Brothers - Bitter Hand IPA
Rogue - Buckwheat Ale (24 Oz. btl or 64 Oz. jug)
Rogue - Amber Ale (24 Oz. btl)
Dogfish Head - Shelter Pale Ale

Despite the fact that Sam Adams is a decent beer, I refuse to drink it out of spite for the faggy high pitched asshat who does or did their radio commercials.

I want to beat that guy in the skull until his balls drop.

Ok folks, since I am living in Munich, here is some info:

Oktoberfest beer is a light-coloured beer, not some dark ale. It also averages 6,2-6,5% alcohol, so it is quite a bit stronger then the average beer (not as strong as the Maerzen - see story, it's mostly correct). Most americans sink below the tables after two to three Mass (litres).

There are only 6 breweries: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbraeu, Paulaner, Spaten, Loewenbraeu
Those are the original Oktoberfest breweries, those brew the authentic Oktoberfest beers. Everything else is fake.

Sam Adams is not too bad, survived my 6-month stay in Boston mainly because of that.

I read about Beck's Oktoberfest beer in one of the above posts. If you ask some bavarian about that, you will probably get hanged, Beck's is northern german beer (bah).

Anyone who likes Bud is gay. Only gays drink that weak, watery stuff...

2002-08-25 04:52:49 PM
I used to like Catamount. But then they got bought out by Harpoon.

2002-08-25 04:57:40 PM
I really like Shiner Bock and Dos Equis Amber.

2002-08-25 05:12:24 PM
does sam adams still make cream stout? that stuff was sooo good but i haven't seen it around for a long time.

angus_macgregor: the scotch ale was pretty tasty as well. really a unique flavor for an american brew. why in the name of sanity did they stop making it?

Looks like all the experts are here.

Monkeypants is going to Prague in a few weeks.

Any suggestions?

Sam Adams used to be my favorite, just like any other beer I was drinking at the time. For some reason a brand of beer tastes great when its popular, but slowly turns into swamp water over the months or years.

One thing is for sure, locally brewed beers never lose their strength and vigor. It must be profit motivation among popular brewers that sacrifices quality.

That should be

Two Brothers - Bitter End Pale Ale
-or-
Two Brothers - Heavy Hand IPA

I must've drank so much of each, that they're now melded into one entity in my memory.

> Rogue - Amber Ale (24 Oz. btl)

That line should read "Lager" rather than "Ale"

Carry on.

You Connecticut people have Magic Hat. (stupid hippie labels:good beer) They just started selling it here in New Jersey.

Keck Somewhere I gathered the notion that Loewenbraeu is actually the result of a merger between two of the originals. I think I read that in a travel magazine's Oktoberfest issue some years back. Lowenhause and...something else? Ring any bells?

2002-08-25 06:35:19 PM
Well, never mind, I must be whacked.

"The Lowenbrau Brewery is another well known name in Munich and also among international beer drinkers . The history of Lowenbrau Brewery going back to medival times. Its name means Lowen the lion. As history indicates, the brewery was founded in a tavern next to the lion cages"

I drank my own urine once. It was OK.

Nothing beats:

Not an Oktoberfest beer, but...

2002-08-25 06:45:47 PM
I wouold rather drink GoodCopBadCop's urine than anything Sam Adams makes... it is all utter crap.

Damn! didn't know it was that big. Sorry.
