Now the NYPD can shoot those minorities in style!

Smegways suck.

They don't belong in the street, they don't belong on the sidewalk.

They're only good for private property. No space for them in public.

/cops are going to get them? Oh, this will go well.

That's so gay.

A couple buddies and I were leaving a restaurant the other night when about 10 guys on crotch rockets did these 1 mile wheelies just hauling balls. At the top of his lungs by buddy screams "THOSE ARE SICKEST FARKING SEGWAYS I'VE EVER SEEN!"

I haven't had a laugh like that in quite awhile.

Come to BWI airport in Baltimore. The cops have been riding around on those things for YEARS..

If anything, those NYPD need to do more foot patrol or ride a bike.

Gen Y sucks, Gen X would kick your collective self-centered asses. If we weren't totally apathetic about everything. PS. Can I borrow $15 for the new Beck album?

Cue that pic of the bicycle cops from "Men At Work"....
2007-05-16 05:49:16 PM
I thought they were stupid till I saw two cops corner a guy in an airport for being weird and sketchy in a Jihad Joe kinda way.

Airline people put the call in and two cops who seem to be 8 feet tall move in at 20 miles an hour. I was intimidated and I wasn't even the guy they were talking too!

Ahh man... for some reason I just got all nostalgic. Everyone remember when the tubes were all abuzz about how "IT" was going to change the world forever, and message boards filled to bursting with speculation about what "IT" was?
2007-05-16 05:57:43 PM
I know a guy who has one, they are a lot of fun. Too expensive though
2007-05-16 06:00:10 PM
IIRC, the Chicago PD uses Segways to patrol Grant Park and a few other areas that are inaccessible to patrol cars and too large for officers on foot.

You know it's a certain kind of brilliance to invent something that replaces the bicycle with something that's not even half as reliable or useful, requires a tremendous amount of computer control to do even that much, gives you NO health benefits whatsoever, and costs as much as a decent used car.

Hell they're not even legal in my jurisdiction. They don't have a powerful enough motor to be legal on the road, and being motorized makes them illegal on the sidewalk. That restricts it to the driveway in front of your house.

Goodness knows its fun to look like a complete tool by riding around in circles in the driveway on your Segway. With a helmet on- because on your property or not the local bicycle helmet laws apply. Lest you want that $250 ticket.

(Electric wheelchairs are considered a medical aid, and hence are exempt from the 'no motorized vehicles on the sidewalk' restriction.)

Were leaving together,
But still its farewell
And maybe well come back,
To earth, who can tell?
I guess there is no one to blame
Were leaving ground
Will things ever be the same again?

Its the final countdown...

Doodoo Dooo Dooo
Doodoo Doot-doodooo
Doodoo Dooo Dooo
Doodoo Doot-doodooo-doo?

Roll on Gob. Roll on!

i kind of wish segways had caught on enough for teenagers to start taking them on halfpipes and grinding rails with them, and after the kids had been doing this for about 5 years and had started getting tired of the whole scene the advertisers would start catching on and making commercials for "X-TREME!" products featuring kids wearing hot pink knee and elbow pads and big dorky helmets busting out phat tricks on their "X-TREME!" segways...

2007-05-16 06:09:40 PM
The rent-a-cops at the new movie theatre in Reno use these. I wonder if they feel like retards.
2007-05-16 06:16:00 PM
looks like the article didn't have anyone riding it. the link is in error
2007-05-16 06:22:27 PM
Oohh.. another killer deal like Kerik's where the stuff "needed to fight crime" just happens to be a company he owns?

Time after delivery before officer crashes one: 5 minutes
Time after delivery before officer steals one: 1 hour

Final inventory of Segways after 1 year:
50% broken
50% stolen
2007-05-16 06:35:18 PM
Your tax dollars at work.

Cop equips segway for +5 douche.
2007-05-16 07:09:49 PM
I've seen a cop segway down that long corridor between the E and 7 in Times Square.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, but what can a segway cop do that a bike cop can't? I mean besides just waste $5 large?

*yawn* theyve been using Segways in atlanta for years now.
2007-05-16 08:21:04 PM
Speaking of stupid inventions, how about the new Volvo with a heartbeat sensor inside it so you can tell if someone is hiding in your car to rape and kill you? Like the Segway, a solution looking for a problem.

"NYPD to deploy the latest, high-tech tools in crime-fighting technology: Segways"

For what? Chasing purse snatching suspects on hovarounds?

/watches a lot of police videos on Spike TV

You know there is a cheaper, healthier and much more practical alternative to a segway:

wha? you can't be serious. Don't people know that NEVER works because umm you can easily see the backseat when you're entering the car??
2007-05-16 10:51:09 PM
Yeah, Springfield, Illinois just got two of them for the police as well. Waste of money. It'll make them look so gay!
2007-05-16 11:01:32 PM
Great, now I'm picturing Dennis Franz's ass.
2007-05-17 06:10:17 AM
what heineous Crimes are they supposed to fight, that justifies this waste of Money?
2007-05-17 08:49:06 AM
I just can't stop laughing at Reefer Madness: "Now the NYPD can shoot those minorities in style!"

2007-05-17 10:57:09 AM
i make it a point to laugh and point every time i see a cop on one of those things. they love it. if they engage me it's usually like, 'you gotta problem, buddy?' and i'm like, 'i was just wondering whose dick you failed to fellate for such a punishment.' and they're all like, 'fellate?'
2007-05-17 03:16:45 PM
I'm a police officer and I'm really getting a kick out of these replies...But a cop in a segway is never going to capture a criminal on foot, and if the officer steps down in order to chase the criminal where the segway couldn't go (it cant get up to the sidewalk from the street unless u get up and lift it there) the segway would be stolen by another thief while the cop chases the first one....hilarity ensues
