Mmmmm, wonder if they saved any Barbaro.

2007-05-15 09:22:16 PM
They only bury the hooves and head of a horse. The rest goes to the meat grinder.

I've had horse meat in East Berlin. It was called "steak". Other than needing a jackhammer to cut through it and jaws of steel to chew it, it wasn't bad.

People who eat horse meat are delicious.

If I wasn't a vegetarian I'd eat it. The benefits are fairly obvious over beef, and there's no reason not to. Cute and cuddly my ass.

I ate it in France. It was downright delicious. Of course, the Frogs do tend to make even mediocre food taste great, so I'm not sure how it would be elsewhere. But now that I think about it, I do think it tasted better than the beef I had in France.

A friend of mine once came back from Haiti with this story: he was at the race track, and a horse "broke down" in the middle of the race. The crowd rushed the track and carved it up on the spot, leaving nothing but a bloody patch of mud.

Not saying I believe this, but it's a pretty good story, no?

In Belgium, we have smoked horse meat, sliced really thin. It somewhat reminded me of prosciutto, albeit tougher, and with a more pronounced taste.

I remember a Fark thred from a few years ago linking to a journal of some guy's stay in Japan. The guy basically detailed all the insane stuff you can find in Japanese ice cream. One particular flavor's main ingredient was raw horse flesh. Even though I've never been there, I love Japan.

I'd eat it. I'd eat dog if I was in Korea too. What the hell.

There's a reason why the majority of us don't ride cows and don't eat horses - now Bambi vs cows cannot be understood, though Rudolph is among the best and has been domesticated.

I ate it in Fance too, and it is wonderful.
Wish I could get it here.

i dont understand why some animals are ok for eating while others are not -- outside of taste reasons. all meat is kinda gross if you think about it, i mean its flesh. unprocessed fishsticks ;), and other seafood is particularly slimy and gross

/ tho tasty

Some of my Tongan friends brought horse meat to our after-softball BBQ. It was tough, but tasted fine.

I would eat horse meat. I don't care. As long as it is clean it doesn't matter.

Without the horse, there would be no such thing as Western civilization. Some respect please, they and their progeny deserve and earned our respect. In this society, we don't eat horse.

The horse is not kosher because of its cloven hooves, right? If I remember Mosaic law correctly.

I'd hit.. er, eat it.

Temescal "In Belgium, we have smoked horse meat, sliced really thin. It somewhat reminded me of prosciutto, albeit tougher, and with a more pronounced taste."

I came here to post about how i wouldn't mind throwing a slab of horse meat on my smoker and seeing how it came out. If slow cooked horsey brisket came out tender and tasty, then every other part would come out better.

/yes, I'm a bbq addict and damn proud of it

Horses have one toe, which means not cloven. Mosaic law? Yes, you got that. Biology? Well...

Anyone know the nutritional facts of a toddler?

Not the nutritional facts no, never eaten one.

We've learned through experience however that the average US toddler or yearling yields over 100,000 BTU/kg when rendered for oil.

My sister owned a horse. I had to let it out of the stall and feed it every morning. The stable was next to the junior high school. One morning, I let the horse out and I look over at the school. Who should be there but the love of my young life. I looked at her, waved and looked back at the horse. All I saw was hooves. The next thing I know, some Drill Sergeant is yelling at me for joining his Army.

When he's not busy beating up his junior chefs that is.

We eat horse around here now and then. I live on a Central/south texas ranch. If you pressure cook the meat it is not tough at all. If you slow cook it sealed with a lot of moisture BBQ style in the oven or on a grill it can be pretty tender too.

Either way it does taste quite good(IMHO). Goes great with A1-Thick and Hearty steak sauce.

Actually that was it's number in the Kentucky Derby.

In Japan you can get basashi which is horse meat. It doesn't taste much different from roast beef.

2007-05-16 01:20:01 AM
There's a whole lot that wrong with American. But one of the right things is that we don't eat our horses.

Actually horses have three toes (I think!) and only walk on the middle one, the "hoof". the other toes are small, withered useless things much like the pope's pee-pee.

Just one more creature to include in my quest to sample all the creatures of the world.

Horse meat is fine and all but what i'm really excited for is our first eagle hunting season.

/mmm...tastes patriotic

"A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!"
Most people interpret that to mean he has lost his kingdom for want of a horse, but actually Richard III is saying...

"Damn this fighting makes you hungry! I could eat a horse!"

2007-05-16 01:23:42 AM
If it's herbivore meat, I'd have no problem eating it so long as it was prepared cleanly and in a healthy fashion. I also like pork and other cloven-hoofed animals so long as it's prepared cleanly.

Don't care much for reptile meat. Too chewy.

Predator meat is bad for a number of reasons completely aside from the cute and cuddly factor. Predators are typically high in cholesterol and fats. They also tend to accumulate environmental toxins and pollutions by eating animals lower on the food chain.

I'd never eat cat or dog because I keep those as pets. By the same token, I'd never keep a pet chicken, cow, or horse.

I understand that Giraffe meat is very tender despite being extremely lean. I've never had the opportunity, though.

2007-05-16 01:24:09 AM
Yeah, but horse beef is rather stringy.

I don't want to say meat due to... Other implications.

/Implications that are NSFW

Agreed, I wouldn't eat the horse before the dog.
