Need both a HERO and SAPPY tag for this story.

/good luck tho

2007-05-13 08:25:45 PM
Owner and dog look a lot alike.

2007-05-13 08:26:39 PM
in before the inevitable argument over whether being a soldier qualifies you for some sort of saintly above-everyone-else status or not!

2007-05-13 08:27:48 PM
I can just imagine some dude coming up to my doorstep and telling me this story. "Sir, I'm a disabled veteran and I'm raising money for an operation to save my beloved dog who's been with me through thick and thin. Won't you help?"

I would say bullshiat, but who knows?

2007-05-13 08:28:15 PM
thats one farking huge dog!

/hope he gets the money to save it

2007-05-13 08:29:44 PM
save him!

2007-05-13 08:31:19 PM
He's not asking for handouts; he wants to work for the money. Very cool.

2007-05-13 08:31:36 PM
any info other then a number to donate too? lol paypal? (seriously)

2007-05-13 08:32:15 PM
A long stupid headline for an uninteresting story. If he weren't a soldier this wouldn't get any attention what-so-ever.

2007-05-13 08:32:22 PM
a three year old dog needs a hip replacement? wtf kind of mutant dog is that?

2007-05-13 08:34:17 PM
Dude needs a paypal account. I would gladly give my $5/month farkin money..

2007-05-13 08:34:34 PM
ONLY ONE RESPONSE!?!?!? Sir, you can mow my lawn and I'll pay you double your asking price. However you will need to drive your mower to Las Vegas.

2007-05-13 08:34:39 PM
xtex: needs a hip replacement?

According to the article, the dog's hips are deformed.

2007-05-13 08:37:36 PM
I should not have laughed at xtex...but I did.

Hip Dysplasia, I'd venture. Which is why good breeders of large dogs test the hips of their breeding stock. My friend got herself a "discount" newfoundland from a pet store (inspite of dire warnings to go rescue or buy from a good breeder) and her poor dog cannot stand up without serious pain. He is just a year old.

2007-05-13 08:38:56 PM
In situations like this, I think of the following proverb:

Give a man money to get his dog a hip replacement, he has his friend for awhile.....
Teach a man how to replace a dog's hips, and he'll have that damn cyborg dog forever!

Offers to work for help....outstanding

2007-05-13 08:42:16 PM
Ugh, vets with a sense of entitlement piss me off. "BOO HOO, I served my country! Waaahhh, I signed the papers so now everyone owes me something!" PFFFFT, get a fackin' job, douchebag.

/veteran
//there you go jaldor

2007-05-13 08:43:54 PM
The argument about veing a vet = hero is futile in this case.

It is trumped by "being disabled and offering to mow lawns to help out your best friend".

Hey Asshat! What part of disabled army vet do you not understand? If anyone is a douchebag it's you.

2007-05-13 08:47:06 PM
He's disabled, yet can mow lawns? I say "GBTW."

/Get back to warrin'
//Yeah, I'd pay him...

2007-05-13 08:47:35 PM
SemperLieSuckah: everyone owes me something

Read the article, did you?

vets with a sense of entitlement piss me off

Yet you close with "/veteran." That's interesting.

2007-05-13 08:47:50 PM
He's a vet, why doesn't he just do the operation himself?
Its not like they're real doctors.

2007-05-13 08:48:41 PM
Which is why good breeders of large dogs test the hips of their breeding stock

Is that what they're calling bestiality nowadays?

/One please
//Window seat
///Would pay money to see a young kid tell the vet to get off his lawn.

2007-05-13 08:49:16 PM
P.S.- For people who've never been in the military, it's basically just like the "outside world" as far as people and personalities.

Douchebag people make douchebag veterans and return to society as lazy douchebags. Those are the people who whine and cry for handouts using their veteran status as leverage. The VA has so many freakin' programs to get those little embarrassments to civilized society off the street corners and into subsidized housing and medical care, there is no reason a veteran anywhere should be SOL for any reason.

/I know, well outside the scope of anything here, but I felt like complaining, it's a pet peeve.

2007-05-13 08:51:11 PM
Poor dog. I wonder how much that new lawn mower cost?

2007-05-13 08:54:04 PM
Offers to work for help....outstanding

Offers to work... knowing it will be picked up in the news and eventually he'll get what he wants without mowing any lawns.

Go get a job as a Wal-Mart greeter. Make more money than $10/lawn.

2007-05-13 08:54:45 PM
Poor guy is in Michigan, though. This is one very, very poor state. Good luck with the donations, dude. People here are either broke or stingy.

/still hope he gets the hip replacement for his critter
//seconds the opinion of hip dysplasia, it's common in large dogs of poor breeding stock

2007-05-13 08:55:05 PM
I can understand how the guy feels - the dog's probably the one thing in his life that cares about him. I'd help him out.

2007-05-13 08:55:38 PM
I want to make a snarky comment about my hatred for dogs...but I can't think of anything good.

2007-05-13 08:56:29 PM
Where do we send money?!?!

2007-05-13 08:56:31 PM
flaEsq: I wonder how much that new lawn mower cost?

You raise an interesting point, so I checked: it looks to be similar to the Toro LX500, which, according to the Toro website, goes for about $1,899.00

i put my cat to sleep because i could not afford heart surgery for him.

i have a bad back from working construction to pay my way through college.

i work 12+ days, and weekends with an office full of dwight shroots to keep a roof over my head.

but i'm not a vet. feel like a damn baby saying this, but jeesus are their struggles so much worse than the rest of us?

/feel like an ass for saying so
//but can't stop myself

2007-05-13 08:58:57 PM
oh wow -- i had no idea dogs younger than 6 or 7 had hip dysplasia. :(

2007-05-13 09:03:51 PM
Why "hero" exactly? Is anyone who has ever been in the armed forces a hero? I'm saying nothing against this particular man, I just don't get the masturbatory reverence for anyone who has ever been in the army in whatever capacity. This guy was a mechanic, it doesn't sound like he slaughtered the Iraqi republican guard or stormed an NVA machine-gun nest single-handed. I'm sure he's a decent enough guy but come on, let's get some perspective here.

2007-05-13 09:06:44 PM
If this serious, id like to donate

can someone do a follow up?

please?

2007-05-13 09:08:55 PM
i called the number and talked to his wife and got a mailing address. gonna send some money.

2007-05-13 09:08:58 PM
Kiribub: You raise an interesting point, so I checked: it looks to be similar to the Toro LX500, which, according to the Toro website, goes for about $1,899.00

That'll cover most of the price. I don't know where the vet pulled that $8K number out, maybe this one is closer at around $2500. Maybe the best thing we all can do is find him a vet who won't assrape him?

2007-05-13 09:14:56 PM
a three year old dog needs a hip replacement? wtf kind of mutant dog is that?

I'm saving for my one year old dogs hip replacement now. Its more or less a defective joint that doesn't fit right from birth and common with dogs. My doc was charging 3500/hip - sometimes you can replace just one, but you do have to do it one at a time.

/loves his defective dog

I wish our Gov't would work this way...I mean enough with the Socialist social programs..such as food stamps, more cash for pumping out babies...supporting illegals..etc.

If you need help, let others help you if THEY CHOOSE too..not tax me for programs I don't need and shouldn'thave to pay for... I can choose to help if I want to, it's called CHARITY!

I do believe out Gov't should be for protection of our borders (they are not doing that.) and a strong military...I'm a strict Constructionist. I don't believe in income "redistribution."

I do think this guy is a hero. A vet...served his country and is willing to exchange hard work for a payment.

He is not asking for a handout... if the 'media' decides to pick up on this so be it. I'd rather CNN and MSNBC report this than bash our troops and our country and silently hopes the USA looses the war on terror.

/just my rant.
//Gov't isn't here to support YOU.
///WE should hold our vets in a hire regard...disabled vets even more so..not some pro ball player or celeb.

2007-05-13 09:21:00 PM
Him and his dog need to lose weight.

2007-05-13 09:22:35 PM
This guy needs a job. I make 9.50 an hour and I was able to pay for 3000+ bucks after my puppy spent a week in a hospital trying to recover from parvo.
Mowing the lawn, please. Sounds like he's trying to make money on his own time, whore.

2007-05-13 09:24:12 PM
served his country admirably

What's admirable? The fact that he's disabled? Oooooookay.

This is an OUTRAGE! Think of all those illegal aliens he's putting out of work by mowing lawns.
He is obviously a RACIST!

2007-05-13 09:28:34 PM
It's not like they're real doctors.

You are kidding right? Surely you don't think that surgery is somehow easier if the mammal in question isn't a human?

I blame Bush and the 'mishandling' of Walter Reed for not providing adequate puppy care to our Vets (veterans I mean... not the "Doctors" that flunked out of people school and became other 'Vets')--I keed

But why I'm here...Who names their dog (which happens to be an enormous mutt) 'David'?

"Meet my pets:
My ferret 'Edna'
My parrot 'Jennifer'
My cat 'Norman William'
My Dog 'David'"

???

But re:article. Sappy story and thanks for not begging but trying to earn it (although your publicity will likely result in someone[s] just paying for it without all that hard mowin').

2007-05-13 09:31:31 PM
Kiribub I noted that I am a vet to credential myself as being able to authoritatively make such a statement.

A disabled vet who is owed something is like the guy I once knew who got trapped in the hydraulics of a CH-53 ramp and was crushed because the pilot didn't look back before raising it. He's now a quadrapalegic and makes shiat for money on it. He also has a family. THAT sir, is a disabled vet deserving of the US's coffers.

"Perspective"? I hope you're trolling with that, but I'll bite. If we don't have any mechanics in the military, should troops just walk or handglide into combat situations after equipment breaks down? Honest to fark, I don't understand how people's minds work. This guy wrecks his body serving his country for years in a legitimate capacity and you people shiat on him. W spends a few months AWOL from the connected-daddy champagne-divison and gets fellated like he stormed Iwo Jima. They way we treat and pay our military personnel in this country is shameful, particularly since it's gotten so very much worse under the party that rode into office waving the flag. I'd contribute some cash to this guy's dog's operation in a heartbeat. Anyone got a link for that?

/Not a veteran, just a regular slob who appreciates what those people do for us every goddamn day, even the least worthy of us

2007-05-13 09:35:20 PM
meh. just bury the dog and get a new one. it's not like there's a shortage of animals needing a home.

2007-05-13 09:39:31 PM
SemperLieSuckah

ignore ^ douchebag.

a vet who is injured and cannot be a fully functional member of society is different from a vet who walked out of the army healthy. some people are put in places where they will wear down their bodies faster than other positions.

vets who disabled vets from service do deserve a certain bit of respect that shouldn't be ignored.

/military (healthy)
